Command & Conquer - Free to Play Official FAQ

Recommended Posts

Actually, I'd be against any established series suddenly switching to free to play. I am highly opposed to DLCs, but even more opposed to microtransactions supporting "free" content. Both of these are just methods to sell you the pieces to finish a partial game, ultimately by paying more than you would have if you bought it completed from the start.

However, all that aside, EA has earned their bad reputation, it wasn't just a spontaneous move by the public to distrust them for no logical reason.

While not an "established series" per se, TF2 went to a free to play model and no one complained, except people who bought it. I don't see a new model as the problem. It's the potential issues with microtransaction markets and outrageous DLC prices. And with that, I would actually agree with you but being completely averse to an idea because it's that different is kinda stupid. People don't like change. Pretty damned obvious.

I oddly enough have confidence that EA will pull the whole addon/DLC part off in a reasonable way.

I don't like it, because it could very well turn out much worse. I could end up having to choose paying more money than I normally would or having inferior and/or limited content. If the restrictions on play are purely cosmetic, then I see no reason this could turn out to be a bad thing, not counting the fact that SP will either not be included or done half arsed.

Telling stories with C&C like it was recognized for in the old days is not a direction they want to go this time I think. Multiplayer RTS has much potential these days and I understand their move if they don't include singleplayer/campaign. Whether I like it is an other story.

Your concern is valid. A "pay to win" scenario is effectively destroying the advantage of a free to play model so I'm hoping against hope that EA will avoid that situation. Cosmetic changes probably won't be included but I wouldn't mind things like new armies being included after release for a nominal fee so long as they're balanced versus the other sides. I wouldn't even be averse to buying SP content as long as it's worth my goddamn money. Gearbox's Borderlands DLC is a good example of how SP additions should work. Tons of gameplay for a low price.

Okay:

  • Buying an expansion pack that adds more content to either singleplayer or multiplayer in a way that doesn't make you superior to other players or interfere with your chances of winning.
  • Paying money for customizing content in a fashion that does not make you superior to other players or interfere with your chances of winning and losing.

Not okay:

  • Paying money to unlock features, abilities or assets that make you superior to other players or interferes with your chances of winning or losing.

This ^ is when I'll be jump off the train.

And that's perfectly valid. I never said it wasn't. If it turns into a pay to win game, I'm jumping ship myself.
