PurpleGaga27 40 Posted January 11, 2013 (edited) When Valve released Steam around 2003-2004, some people thought it was the beginning of the end of PC gaming as we know it due to the usage of DRM to reduce piracy. Now here comes another possible future doom to PC gaming. When Gabe Newell did not like Windows 8 which may be catastrophic for PC gaming, he and Valve instead partnered with another company and came up with this new video console that could make future Nintendo, Xbox, Playstation, and possibly PC gaming into peril. Source: http://venturebeat.com/2013/01/11/xi3-piston-is-this-valves-steambox/ A small console box with a Linux powered OS, a 3.2 ghz quad-core CPU, 8 GB RAM, 384 graphic cores, 8 USB ports, 3 audio ports and up to 1 TB in HD storage all combined to use about 40 watts! It can also can view 4K resolution viewing (4320p). Gee I wish I had a computer box like that small size. As for Apple, they better come up with a gaming console one day now that Valve has joined the others in that video console competition. Question is, do you think Valve did the right thing? Edit: Valve will announce the Steam Box on Monday. It was formerly called as the Xi3 Piston. http://www.valuewalk.com/2013/09/valve-steam-box-announcement-due-monday/ and http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2013/09/20/valve-announcing-the-steam-box-on-monday/ Also there was also an indie gaming console released not long ago: http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2013/06/25/99-ouya-console-hits-retail-today-already-sold-out-at-amazon/ Edited September 20, 2013 by zocom7 Share this post Link to post
Tore 33 Posted January 12, 2013 The Xi3 Piston is not THE Steam Box, but a Steam Box. If I've understood correctly the name "Steam Box" will be used on PC's that ship with Steam on them, be it on Ubuntu, other Linux distros or Windows they will all be called Steam Boxes. As for the Xi3 Piston I've only seen pictures of it running Windows... By the way there might be a Steam Box coming from Valve themselves most likely running Ubuntu, but Gabe says that it will not be locked to any OS so you can install what ever OS you like as long as it is x86 compatible. Doctor Destiny 41 Posted January 13, 2013 I'm not too keen on this whole thing already. I don't like the idea of someone else controlling my purchases. I still dislike Steam for this very reason so the Steam Box gets a big, fat no from me. Share this post Link to post

Doctor Destiny 41 Posted March 20, 2013 The Steambox will fail and I kinda hope it does. It doesn't address any problems. Rather, it exacerbates them tenfold. Also, Windows 8 is not a catastrophe for gaming. I know several people who use that OS and it works as you would expect. Anyone telling you that Windows 8 is bad is telling you a bold faced lie. PurpleGaga27 40 Posted September 20, 2013 New update on the first post. Valve is going to challenge Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo on console gaming wars. Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted September 21, 2013 No they're not. It will be a glorified PC that runs the same **** you have on a tower. It won't be anything special. Share this post Link to post
PurpleGaga27 40 Posted October 18, 2013 Valve isn't the only company to bring in a PC console to TVs: http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57608183-93/nvidias-gamestream-initiative-to-bring-pc-titles-to-the-big-screen/ Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted October 18, 2013 I can do that already. It's called an HTPC. Share this post Link to post
Tore 33 Posted October 19, 2013 The only thing I like about the SteamOS is the fact that it will improve the GPU drivers for Linux. Share this post Link to post
