ZoomInGames Interviews Tim Morten

Recommended Posts

Tara Babcock from ZoomInGames has interviewed Tim Morten at E3 and asked him about the recent topics from C&C ad blurbs, such as non-Middle Eastern generals, shoes for the Workers and the semantics of free-to-play gameplay and development. Once more, he answers the question of what will be and will not be free in the game and repeats the fact that one can earn everything by either playing or paying.

I feel kind of late to this party, but it is on topic, so I feel it needs to be said.

In this case, Tim Morten worded the pay system terribly. He said "anything someone can pay for, you can play and earn it instead so it's fair."

hat's exactly what pay to win is. He just turned the words around. Anything you can earn, someone can just pay for.

I'm not exactly sure what he meant by that, but the way he worded it does not sound good at all.

I think you are mistaken, pay to win usually means that forking over real money gives you an advantage not otherwise available. Or more realistically, when it is obvious which players pay.

Being able to get the everything through either playing or paying is what some people consider to be free to play "done right". Throwing the entire concept out the window is the only way it can really be done right in my opinion.

The thing that struck a nerve with me is the fact that he mentioned "paying for generals" which would add unique skill sets.

Considering the recurring balance issue of past C&C games (whether there actually is one or not, people complain that there is), I hope that generals can be earned too, but he made it sound like it's something that you might have to pay for.

Lets face it, they have to eventually charge money for something. If its individual Generals so be it. Do you really want to hand over your hard earned cash for cosmetic features like unit skins and/or sounds? Would you pay for extra maps?

A single player campaign for each faction is something I'd pay for. I would not pay to "level up" or gain advantages for online multiplayer, simply because that doesn't interest me.

The only thing I would pay for is a full and complete game for a single and reasonable price. I do not pay for free games.

A full game may be a good idea. :P

Remember how Valve made Team Fortress 2 F2P after a few years of being a standard game? Now they only charge useless crap like hats and costumes. People actually BUY that.

This can only be proven fair if the automatch system pairs people who have about an equal arsenal.

They removed the GLA generals because they're middle-eastern? LMAO

Are they gonna remove China too because Generals 1 stereo-typed their nationalism in ridiculous ways?

No. They're just not strictly from the Middle East.

FYI, Generals 1 was banned in China, not for nationalism, but for destroying an important building in Hong Kong as China.

If it's a game I spend a whole lot of time playing I don't mind paying small amounts of money for awesome cosmetic upgrades. That only gives me a bond to the game, which is good. Then again, I do not believe that micro-transactions is a business model that can be applied to just any kind of game.
