Technical issue with the Internet -- need help here

Recommended Posts

I don't know where is the best place to discuss this for technical help. Contacting my new Internet provider (which is Charter Spectrum btw) may do some help, only if my router and/or Internet connection does not work at all. The big problem is a more safer, stable Internet that I don't have unlike my previous DSL I had for several years.

So I have a 60 mbps (down)/5 mbps (upload) cable connection (not fiber optic) working in Win7 64-bit, but it's not a stable and safe connection which left a lot of loading and running websites, downloads and cloud programs incomplete/corrupted and even to mention frozen downloads and loading sites before completion. I also occasionally am seeing an Internet blackout causing a disconnection and I had to reboot the PC. I tried using OpenDNS to get a faster, safer and stable Internet but it hasn't helped much and contacting support for setting up my router (which is a Arris TM1602 with no wifi and no manual) has no answer yet. Also I found out lately that the Win7 64-bit OS on my secondary 320 GB HD runs slower than running Win7 32-bit in my original 320 GB HD despite disabling Windows Update/Firewall/Defender, the security center and some other unnecessary tasks.

Is there a way to make a cable Internet connection more stable and secure?

I wish if there is a tool or option from a program that can restrict download web pages to at least 5 mbps and large file downloads/watching movies at a normal 60 mbps.

Sounds more like your pc is acting up, not your internet connection. Especially the "I also occasionally am seeing an Internet blackout causing a disconnection and I had to reboot the PC." bit... sounds a lot like there is memory corruption in your ram.

My guess is hardware fault and/or virus.

Actually my PC slows down when I am connected to the Internet and my PC speed is normal when offline. I don't know how to make my new Internet connection to be as stable as DSL.

You don't make your connection stable. That is what your provider is for. Period. They either provide a decent line signal or they don't.

Signal quality aside. If you get crap performance on your side of the modem/router it can be faulted to:

1. UTP cable: This either works perfectly or you have a busted cable.

2. WIFI: A numerous of **** can hamper wifi connections.

3. PLC(powerline com. devices): The devices are ****, can't connect or keep connection to eachother, your house has crappy electrical wiring or your devices are on seperate electrical circuits, or you're using a splitterbox with current/lightning protectors.

Given your connections are working fine. Your distribution devices aren't. Overheating modem/switches, faulty software/updates on your modem. Update its firmware if possible, reset to factory defaults etc etc..the usual helpdesk support stuff.

Given all your connection hardware is working fine:

Bad network card/wifi adapter in your pc/laptop. Update its software, worse case replace.

You can basicly do a /ping command in your cmd box to check if you have package loss and/or delays. Or do a /pathping if you have extra switches or routers in your network setup and want a detailed overview.

When it comes to slowing your pc down:

Internet doesn't slow your pc down. peripheral software does..like dl accelerators, programs that constantly connect to the internet and do numerous of **** in the background..like Steam and such, anti virus updates, skype etc etc.

You can dl something like wireshark and have it capture your network adapter and check if and where outgoing connections are being made. you could use the /netstat command in cmd box aswell.

You can try a /netview command to check if any other devices are on your workgroup.

General slowdowns come from either overtaxing your cpu and/or overheating(both cpu and memory). Both shutdown in cases of extreme temperature.

Still sounds to me like memory corruption or virus, and as you said the pc gets slower if its connected you're probably in a nice cozy botnet mining bitcoins and doing other tasks.

The one thing I found out that was causing a major slowdown on my PC was ZoneAlarm and I had to close and disable it, leaving my Norton Internet Security 2014 active.

However I keep getting "secure connection failed" messages every time I load websites. No matter if I enable all SSL and TSL protocols in Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer, I am still reading the error messages. My cable Internet still had trouble loading some sites (including incomplete loads) even without the "secure connection failed" message.

Also I am getting incomplete image loading, including distorted loaded images. When it comes to downloading files, oftentimes they get corrupted and I had to start over.

And one more thing, should I have to let my cable modem turned on 24/7 for full functionality? I don't like having the cable modem on 24/7 just to increase risks of anyone hacking the modem through my PC. Even the yellow paper warning says "Do not disconnect the AC power when using." I turn off the computer when not using as well as the cable modem. I always did that to my former DSL modem.

You have issues with your computer, not your connection. Might need to reinstall Windows to dump the garbage that's accumulated.
