Anzac Day

Recommended Posts

Today is Anzac Day, where we remember the Australians and New Zealanders who fought and died not only in the first World War, but in World War Two, Korea, Vietnam, any time their country called upon them to serve. It is a very special day to reflect upon the sacrifice that was made for the freedom of people the world over, and I ask everyone to join in a minute's silence out of respect of those who are no longer with us.

Lest we forget.

I respect any national holiday remembering the lives of those who fought and died for their cause.

Anyone willing to give their lives to further the cause of freedom is a hero. Every last one a matyr whose actions should light a fire in the hearts of others. For if one person dies to save the lives of others then though should be venerated indeed.

But a simple question to quash my ignorance of the subject, but what does the word "Anzac" mean?

Thank you for the kind words, and Anzac stands for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. They went off to fight in Turkey in World War One, digging into the trenches and fighting on the beaches much like the Omaha Beach battle in Normandy during World War Two. It has a special place in Australian hearts because this is the first Anzac Day where there are no more Anzacs, the last one having passed away.

Does it occur on the same day annually? I would very much like to add it to my calender.

Never forget, people may leave us, they may pass away from this world, but as long as they remain firmly in our hearts then nobody can ever truly die. Their sacrifice is such that they will still be remember past our lifetimes, or our childrens, or our grandchildrens. You cannot take away the past.

I agree that this day should be remembered for those who fought to protect the British Empire and the freedom of democracy and the world.

Yes, April 25th every year. I think there is a similar date in October or November called Rememberance Day which is for all people who have fought and died for the country. Today is specifically for the Anzacs.

Are you by any chance reffering to the Remembrance Day on the 11th of November at 11o'clock, which is for the soldiers in the First & Second World Wars? They make a very big deal out of that here. At 11o'clock everybody stops whatever they are doing & remains silent for 2 minutes. Its something that almost brings me to tears, people all over the world showing such tremendous respect.

The fallen shall be ever remembered as mankind's finest.

Verterans day and Memorial Day here in the US are similar days of remembrance for all the men and women who served for the betterment of others and ultimatley, ourselves. Sadlly, the number of surviving verterans dwindles. My Great-grand father was an infantry man in the Pacific theatre, he passed just in 2003.

well i didn't know about that o.o only rememberence day (an vet day, but i can't remember the date if it's different) i always give the silences... gosh i was so ashamed the two years back everyone in the whole of southend was doing the 2 minute silence, except the two idiots who were walking with me. after booting each in the shin i walked over to the group of people and stood quietly with them crying o.o;

yah this subject probably wasn't the best idea for me to read anyway right now since i'm borderline crying from the console wars thing... now i'm fully crying cos of the brave soldiers that died for a cause :
