So, I'll be away until further notice, probably a few days. Upgrading to a gig of RAM, getting my new video card put in (NVidia 7900), and getting a new power core thing.

Bye guys!

lol, at least it won't get screwed up then :P

How much is it going to cost?

That's a quick 10 minute job at most. I hate to know how much you're gonna be charged to get that done!

I dunno what hardware prices are in the states, but a gig chip and a power unit would cost somewhere in the region of $60-70 at most I imagine. Rip off merchants known as so called professionals will charge at least double that for the parts and probably an extra $50 at least for the labour.

Then without a doubt, he'll express that the current rig housing is too small for the new power unit. So that'll be an extra $40-50 for a new case, then another $50-75 for the labour to transfer all the components over.

Then if he feels like pushing some more, the RAM will be incompatible with the current mobo, and therefore he'll need a new processor as well so there's another $350 at least. Oh and add the fact that the current IDE ATA hard drive will probably slow down the rest of the rig, so gain another $100 for a SATA, or push the boat out for a faster Fibre channel drive. Then hell charge extra for the format and transfer of current data... Call that another $50.

End result is a totally screwed con-job situation and a bill in the region of $600-850 for the total upgrade!

So yeah, might as well learn the ropes and do it yourself. Get the parts for way less than $100, job done! I've been conned into this sort of thing before I done upgrades myself. A job that would have cost less than a new 250Gb hard disk ended up costing me the price of a mid/High range PC.... Not funny at all!!!

Yeah a RAM upgrade is the easiest upgrade you can do, pull the old modules, insert the new ones, turn on the computer and your away.

Thats why I like my computer, because I put it all together myself. I like how that everything inside (and outside) is all my work.

Plus building them yourself is a learning experience, leaving it with some "expert" to install the parts not only costs more dollars but you loose in learning department as well.

Not to mention they ALWAYS sift through all your files for anything worth copying... ;) Which is why when ever, which never happens by the way, I have to sent my comp anywhere, it doesn't go with my Hard Drive. :P

I've owned a PC in one form or another since 1996, not once have I taken one for repair or upgrades to some shop.

BTW, Hypnotist we are not bagging you for taking your PC to someone for upgrades. Some people don't feel confident about opening up there boxes and tinkering with things. If your not careful bad things can happen.

It always depends on the guy... I remeber going to the computer shop of a friend of my dad to buy my 9550 card... And I couldn't help but eavesdrop on what seemed to be a hot conversation... It seems that the dumb kid pressed his RAM too deeply... Resulting in... *Drumroll*

Burning of the whole PC 10 seconds after start up.

That's why sometimes if you're not that experienced, it pays to just pay extra to ensure your PC's (and also your) saftey before, during and after an upgrade.

Man, he actually did it.... :? We didn't get to him quick enough to stop it

Well, Hypno, when you get back on, next time, just use the motherboard manual to figure out where the power cords go, but the RAM and video card are really easy, just pull out and put in

HAHA, I PWNED YOUR PRICE RANGES.

Quick and easy. $291 for 450 watt power core, an extra gig of RAM, and the insertion of my video card. Didn't need a new case, and I even got another problem fixed for FREE.

It's cause we know the people, what do you expect? :D

I've gotta be honest with you, I find that quite ironic, because the one thing I didn't buy, a new monitor, DID blow up. It honestly popped while I was playing Battlefield 2, and started smoking.

Isn't that weird?

Now I'm on a 19'' LCD monitor.

I'm dead serious... if King recalls, I once told him this thing had problems in the past, if he remembers the time half my screen was dark.
