New Interview with Joe Kucan

Recommended Posts

Towards the end of May, Joe Kucan, was interviewed by The Mercury News. As we have stated in the past, interviews with Joe are very funny to read and this one is no different but he does actually give us some serious answers as well, like why he received a directing credit for C&C Generals when he really had nothing to do with the creation of the game. As always, check out this sample.

The Mercury News: This was a long hiatus between your appearances as the Kane character.

Joe Kucan: Yeah, with Command & Conquer 3, it's been about seven years since I've actually been in the studio. We did some Kane appearances in one of the Tiberian Sun expansion packs. Firestorm had a brief appearance of Kane. There wasn't as much acting involved. I was submerged in a tank of water. That was the extent of my participation in that. It has been about seven years. But I did do the voice over stuff for Command & Conquer Renegade. That was after Tiberian Sun. But in terms of the video, yeah, it's been a while. As you can tell, video has fallen out of fashion for that amount of time.

The Mercury News: What was it like shooting the newest game?

Joe Kucan: It was a good time. It was great fun. It was great to be back in the studio. It was daunting when I first stepped back on the set and saw how much money they spent. Trisha Helfer is a pro from the word go. She was a little intimidated. But once we got used to each other, I think we had a really good time. She was the only other actor I had a significant amount of scenes and dialogue with. That was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed that. I enjoyed that so much more than the solo sneering into the camera, menacingly. I'll be curious to see how it all turns out. To tell you the truth, I haven't seen any of it yet. No one has sent me the final. I did get a message that someone was putting one together. But it felt good while we were doing it. The reaction from the production company was great.

Its a very informative interview so click here for the rest.

Joe is great, and EA would be wise to keep bringing him back for future C&C games. I would like it even more if they let him direct the FMVs.

The FMVs in C&C 3 are high in quality from the production side of things but they lack the emotion from the original games. Perhaps letting Joe direct them again would regain that.

I missed the subtext - but this is an unusual interview from Joe - in that he's pretty serious throughout. That being said - he's still funny.

I think the time-crunch rather than directorship is responsible for any issues you have. I never think actors should wear more than one hat at a time... despite good results in previous cases. I think it's the exception rather than the rule.

I love the 1999 filming gag...

He He He... what a great moment to be able to say something like that. I'd kill, or possible maim, or really just inflict a good tounge lashing on a flag pole or abandoned car for an opportunity to do likewise!!!
