Tiberium Legos - Designer Diary #02

Recommended Posts

Guest Rabbit

In this DD, I'll be explaining how I make the lego videos.

First, before I take any of the pictures, or even write the script, I'll usually design the set, based on the general idea of how I want the episode to go.

In this image, I am mixing red, blue, and yellow clay to make brown, which I will use for the base of new bits of tiberium. You might notice some lego characters towards the bottom, and random materials scattered around the table I'm working on.

Usually, designing the set will consist of building walls out of legos, or building background scenery out of scrap parts, or even clay. Stuff like railings, tracks, general man-made objects are made of legos, but nature-related scenery, such as rocks or tiberium, is made with clay.

Afterwards, I'll deal with the characters and vehicles in the specific episode. Depending on how far along in the storyline I'll tend to be, I'll upgrade the "tech level" I happen to be working on. For example, in Tiberian Sun, the only real vehicles you recieve in the beginning of the game are the Nod Buggy and the GDI Wolverine. Thus, we see my creation below:

As you can see, this is the Wolverine I've created, which you will see in the first episode of the next season.

Obviously, after creating units and scenery, I'll design a script to work with. In the case of the first episode, you'll see that it mimics the first GDI mission in Tiberian Sun, but that's all I'm going to tell you. I'll basically type the script, write the script, or just try and make an attempt at memorizing the script, depending on whether or not I'm working near my computer.

Then, to fit with the script, I must design the set of the video at hand. I basically design different sets depending on the scene, and I'll take all the pictures for any scenes using that set before moving onto another scene.

This is the basic set of the inside of a GDI barracks. It looks kind of bland and way out in the open, but when it's actually in the video, it looks way different. *Click the image to see the difference.*

Then, after designing the set, I basically have to take hundreds of pictures. Each lego video takes up approximately 430 pictures, which I modify to work how I want them. So far, my camera itself has taken over 12000 pictures, purely for still animation work I have done in the past, including this series.

I organize these pictures into different folders for the scene work that it takes. Once I do that, I manually put every picture into windows movie maker, and I add voices and sound using Audacity. Interestingly, this is a rather easy part, and I usually finish putting the video itself together within an hour, while it usually takes me about 4 or 5 to take all the pictures.

From left to right: A typical image folder, windows movie maker, and audacity. *Note, the above images are high res images.*

And that's all there is to it! That's how I create an entire video!

Any questions?

Good work Zee !

I know this is my first post... But I have to ask you something. Where did you find the tiberian sun sounds you used in "Tiberium Legos - Episode 01" - the very first episode ? I searched every where for them on the internet but i just couldn't find any...

If you could please tell me where i can get some tiberian sun unit sounds. I would appreciate it very much...

Thanks.

If you use the XCC mixer, you can find them in your Tiberian Sun .mix files somewhere.

I believe so. I don't know about Renegade, but with things like Generals and Zero Hour, find the .big files instead of .mix.

Zee, do you convert your aud. files that you extract from .mix files ?

And what program do you use to convert them ?

Right click the AUD file, and select copy as WAV (PCM). It will put the audio file either in your XCC folder, or it will put it in whatever folder the second XCC drag window is set to.
