Origonally posted by LitBolt

I origionally wanted to be called "Lightning Bolt", but that rarely fit on any sort of name entry thing. So when I got Final Fantasy 2 for my SNES and saw "Lit-Bolt" in the opening movie, I decided that worked too. It was sort of a combination thing, as I had thought about it a bit before that. Heh. My avatar is a lightning spell button from the first Diablo. I only has the demo of it, but I found that it was the only thing lightning-related that I had lying around that met the requirements here.

I chose MachineDoctor as I am an Automation Engineer who specializes in the Automation of Pharmaceutical Packaging Machinery.

My company adds inspection devices to existing production equipment and make our own stand-alone machines.

Anyone out there know what a PLC is?

Guest Dragonne{TRIAD}

OK time to admit being a geek. :P

MY nick comes from an old Dungeons and Dragons character I played for like 15 years. The full name was Roland Dragonne, but for some reason the first name got lost and my D&D friends just ended up calling me "Drag" as a nickname. I even kept the name when I started working at Renaissance festivals in the ealy 90's for a few summers. There it split between "Roland" and "Drag" depending on if it was new or old friends. Now at my clan LAN parties (members come from all over the US and Canada to my home for 4-5 days every May) everyone calls me "Drag". Hell I've even caught my wife calling me Drag a few times. Now THAT sounded peculiar! :D

It's strange how these things come about isn't it?

I was given my name by a huge group of C&C newbies on a C&C related chat-room... all because after 2 weeks of Tiberian sun being released I knew the game inside out and was able to get most of them through their problems.

I was also given (back in 1998) a quizx about tiberium, when (back then) i could name every gas & mineral in tiberium and their percentages from memory instantly...

I used to live & breathe command & conquer and my knowledge of every game upto Tiberian sun was absolutely perfect.... and because of that I earned the name C&C King...

This name was not really done justice until Renegade came out, when i made a name for myself around alot of it's online servers. It was quite amazing how many people would scuttle or attempt to kill me & failed, when they saw me coming!

Renegade was the last game i played where i could truly have enjoyed C&C to it's best! Hopefully RenAlert will have people trembling in their boots again at the sight of my 2nd coming!

Rogue Leader is a Star Wars reference. Wedge Antilles is my favorite character from Star Wars, and in the books he becomes the Commanding Officer of Rogue Squadron.

Then in Junior High School I wrote some short stories based on me becoming Rogue Squadron's CO, hence Rogue Leader was born :D

I am an Automation Engineer who specializes in the Automation of Pharmaceutical Packaging Machinery

Is there simpiler description for your job?

The short answer is NO!

Basically, I specialize in the integration of 3rd party devices in a comprehensive solution for Pharmaceutical Packaging needs.

Here's an example:

Timothy Leary (pun intended!) Pharmaceuticals has a Labeler to apply a label to their packaged drugs. The FDA (Food & Drug Administration) has a mandate stating that if you don't have an automated system inspecting the Bar Code on each label (to insure that it is in fact the correct label for the drug) you must have 200% manual inspection.

This means that you would look at it for defects (not easily perceived by the Human Eye (in respect to Bar Codes)) and when you were done you would hand it to another operator to inspect for the same defects. Thus 200% manual inspection!

Now picture this: Some of these lines run 300/600/1200 Product per Minute (hopefully you have pictured Lucy in the Chocolate Factory). It just doesn't happen and is still open to Human Error!

We'll install a Bar Code Reader that will inspect each label, BEFORE it is applies to the bottle. We can then program the PLC (yup, that pesky acronym again!) to process the results of the Bar Code Scanner and either track the rejected label to an eject station or stop the machine (or handle it however they want!).

I know that's not a simplier description but it is an accurate representation of what I do.

I used to work for a company that made labelers. 3 years ago, I branched out on my own and started a company that works on EVERY machine on the packaging line.

Here's a typical Packaging Line:

Bottle Unscrambler (to upright bulk bottles)

Filler (to dispense the contents into the bottles)

Capper (to place a cap on the filled bottles)

Induction Sealer (to allow the bottle orifice to be sealed with tamper evident material)

Check Weigher (to insure that the proper amount of tablets have been placed in the bottle)

Labeler (to label the bottle with accurate information regarding it's contents)

Cartoner (places 1 bottle in a rectangular carton)

Case Packer (places many bottles into a case and seal it)

Palletizer (places many cartons on 1 pallet (in a predetermined layout) to ready them for shipment)

All this is done automatically. The only Human Intervention is resupplying the raw components to each machine and pressing a Start Button. We handle the rest.

So for the people who are reading this and are undecided in their career paths, this is a line of work that there are not that many people who are proficient in all aspects of this field. Should you pursue it, you will be rewarded with very valuable and in demand skills that can command a very good salary (once you have experience).

It's a great job. Until the PLC program is in place, all machines are nothing more than a hunk of metal with a bunch of sensors and wires.

While it wasn't simpler, I think you have an idea of what a MachineDoctor is.

Yup, I really love my work. I started out on my own 3 years ago and now we have 9 people. We do work for every major pharmaceutical company.

One of the perks is that due to tax breaks, much of the medicine, in the US, is packaged in Puerto Rico. I usually have someone (if not myself) on the island at least 1 a month. Personally, I've been there 45 times in about 10 years. It's great in the Winter!!! :D

I used to have a permanent tan (at least my face and arms)! Now I send people in my stead as running the company gets more demanding each day.

Well, [theres a story behind my nick], when I first got Renegade last year, I jumped on one of the 3 NZ servers of that time, and saw people using the hidden vehicles & units........and repeatedly asked how to get them (as one does ;)) and was told to goto GpForums and signup, and there I'd be told........I couldn't think of a reasonable username to sign up with, so I just chose 'DeadEye' from Renegade :D

Yeah :P

I got my name from my Avatar. Bill Steamshovel used to be a character from the Mr Squiggle show. Mr Squiggle was canned though, but I don't know why.

MachineDoc: A PLC is a programmable logic controller. I couldn't remember for the life of me, but it twigged when you said you had to program it :P

Very good Bill! :D

Yup, that's the crux of our work, configuring PLC's. Fun stuff!

Have you ever programmed one?

You are probably correct although in the US we have Corporations and LLC's (Limited Liability Company) and some other business entities.

I think PLC is German (in the sense you are using it).

Either way, PLC is just an acronym. In my industry, it's the bread & butter acronym as probably 95% of all the machines have a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller).

Would you like to know more?

(bad attempt at humor based on the movie Starship Troopers (great animation!)).

not german :?

anyway yeh a limmited liability company means the owner is not responsible for any debts of thwe company and the debt is not under their name so basically the same thing

Nah, my brother is an electrical engineer so he does that stuff. The only programming I do is with C++, VB, Java et al. To do PLC work I'd prolly have to do an electrical engineering course.

You'd probably be okay it after a short while. The releated EE stuff can be taught, as long as you have a programmer's mindset and a little training, you'd do fine. After all, it's primarily Boolean!
