RA3 Tacitus Thursday - The Bullfrog & The Sickle

On the Official C&C Site the latest "Tacitus Thursday" feature is covering Red Alert 3. This week its a close up look at two Soviet units, the Bullfrog and the Sickle. You can check out some concept art and download some wallpapers of each unit and while your there read an interview with Matt Britton, the Lead Art Director for Red Alert 3. Concept art and a sample of the interview can been seen below.

 

Why did you name these units the Sickle and the Bullfrog?

 

The Sickle is an obvious piece of Soviet imagery pulled from their flag. This unit is all about cutting down infantry like a scythe so the name seems like a perfect fit. The Soviet faction was conceived from the ground up as having a heavy rounded shape vector across the faction. We originally borrowed this shape cue from the real Soviet Hind helicopter, the shape of which has always seemed very toad-like to me. he Bullfrog is one of our clearest expressions of this idea, and I think one can see a lot of the Hind in its shape.

I love both of these units. It's interesting the comment about SOVIET being round in style... interesting because it doesn't work for the Apocalypse tank as previously discussed. Hopefully it can remedied.

I agree with the methodology, but the execution leaves much to be desired.

Still I've only seen the small in-game unit. Perhaps once we see some renders - my attitude will change.
