Sonic 295 Posted February 19, 2008 Found this at Planet CNC, their latest POTD. Charting the history of the SAGE engine from it's origins in Emperor Battle for Dune to its days as W3D for Earth and Beyond and Renegade, then SAGE for Generals/Zero Hour/BFME 1 & 2/C&C 3/Kane's Wrath and of course is latest incarnation will be seen in Red Alert 3. I fail to understand why people criticise EA for using the SAGE engine so much when it has been so successful. With each new game it powers its proven to be better than the previous version with each new game. So what's the problem? Valve do the same thing with the Source engine, constantly reinventing it to take advantage of new hardware. Share this post Link to post
Inferno 22 Posted February 19, 2008 Hrrrmmmm... crappy quality somewhat? Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted February 19, 2008 No worse than any other engine. The success of the engine is not measured by the games, but by the mods produced for them. Share this post Link to post
Duke 0 Posted February 19, 2008 (which is why BfME & Generals are still reasonably popular in many areas). Although that's a pretty poorly though out argument I think....Sure mods are nice but they don't make the success of a game. I wish I could find statistics but the amount of people that buy a game to mod it or buy a game to play it must be 1000:1 at laest, Share this post Link to post
Luk3us 63 Posted February 20, 2008 People don't like Sage, cause its old. The fact that it still serves its purpose is totally irrelevant of course. Share this post Link to post
Guest Anti-Marine Posted February 20, 2008 Red Alert 3 doesnt look too bad or good. we have to find out! Share this post Link to post

Mods extend the life span of most games, which leads to more buying the game, which can lead to more mods. I agree to some extent but disagree at the same time. Share this post Link to post
CCHyper 3 Posted February 21, 2008 Well, SAGE is not actually a orignal engine, seeing as its houses a ton of code from Tiberian Dawn, its just the original Westwood's engine, 12 years on Share this post Link to post
Sonic 295 Posted February 21, 2008 Well that's news to me, first time I've heard of this. Share this post Link to post
Saracen 16 Posted February 21, 2008 Sounds like a load of rubbish to me too. If it housed all that code the First Decade would have worked right out the box. Cos EA would have known what to do. Share this post Link to post
TheBlackOut 7 Posted February 23, 2008 (edited) Sounds like a load of rubbish to me too. If it housed all that code the First Decade would have worked right out the box. Cos EA would have known what to do. Maybe EA was just too lazy? Yea, sounds pretty BS to me though. Edited February 23, 2008 by TheBlackout Share this post Link to post
Overcow 0 Posted February 24, 2008 I must say i prefet the Alamo engine, SAGE is starting to feel a little old. Share this post Link to post
Sonic 295 Posted February 25, 2008 For those who don't know, ALAMO is the engine Petroglyph made for Empire at War and Universe at War. ALAMO is suitable but needs a lot work. Its not as visually appealing as SAGE. Share this post Link to post
Duke 0 Posted February 25, 2008 It's also very buggy. From both a modding and a gaming point of view I prefer SAGE. Share this post Link to post
