hi, i have been trying to find out how to mod for at least 2 days now, but all i can find are other people mods they have already made or are going to make.

i was hoping that someone can tell me how to mod. you know, change the deploy function for an existing unit, or set the health and speed of a new one...

i have a basic understanding of modding from my experience with starwars battlefront 2 modding. i need to know where the files are that i edit to mod, and how to re-skin and things like that. along with a list of all the programs i need to mod.

plz help :(

ps

i herd something about ini files, where can i get those or find them?

its very easy. the .ini files are in ra2.mix libary. you can open the .mix files with XCC mixer. then just click File > Find > ad type tere "Rules.ini". there will be 1 result, so double-click on it. in the left panel will be a lot of files, and rules.ini file will be marked. then right click on rules.ini and click "Extract". then save rules.ini in your RA2 folder. and no spec. program to open the .ini files isn´t required. just open it in notepad and edit the file! its simple, see? and tell me when you make your mod, i will test it .

Sorry to seem like a total moron, but could I possibly have this explained a little further?

I grabbed XCC, I've done the extracting, I've edited my rules.ini, I've copied it to my RA2 directory...

....now what? Ra2/Yuri doesn't give me anywhere to load a mod. Do I need to create a modded map using the new rules.ini or something?

Apologies if this is really simple but this is literally my first attempt at modding any game and I can't wait to make the Soviets a viable non-rush team!

Cheers,

Shafto.

rules.ini modifies Red Alert 2. Anything with an "md" suffix, modifies the expansion, Yuri's Revenge.

Ah, well that's certainly useful and thank you for taking the time to reply to my post, but it doesn't seem to answer my question (unless I'm being a newb again).

What do I do with the rules.ini once I've finished with it? Do I leave it in the root of the RA2 directory? Will that automatically alter the units I've modded in any network or skirmish games that I play?

Or do I need to somehow re-pack the rules.ini into the ra2.mix or ra2md.mix that I got it from?

Thanks for any help anyone can give,

Shafto.

nah just leave it in the ra2 directory.

ra2 reads the directory files first when loading so it will just ignore the ones in the mix file . . . i think thats the reason anyway
