comander starlin 6 Posted January 17, 2009 (edited) As you might be aware that there is a new law being passed in new zealand that will be in effect as of 28th of February 2009, this law is regarding the freedom of downloading objectionable content, like Music, TV Show's, even Movies. This law in part is if you download anything objectionable the ISP's have to ban you and they remove the right for you to connect to the internet. this is a violation of basic rights as an individual, where you are guilty before a trial. instead of innocent before proven guilty. As you guys all probably do is download the odd song and maybe a TV show that is playing at the moment (more so for Kiwi's who have to wait up to 2 years before we even get some of the shows, or not at all)you want to be able to sample it before you spend your hard earned money to get it. well now you wont be able to because of this law. all it does is protects the Music Movie and TV Industry, but at the same time alienates their customers (you). this also gives them the right to set what price they want for there goods, increasing the amount of poor quality productions, and wastes our money. In new zealand we don't get to see many of the good show's that USA, UK, EU, CA, AU get to see and when we do it is played in the middle of the day Monday- Friday, this is law allows company's like TVNZ and TV3 constantly play rubbish shows like Survivor in prime time slots, and the million re runs it gets. (i am so sick of watching Friends, and yet that is close to one of the best shows on TV. probably re run number 10 or so.) New Zealand is so far behind in the world that our Sky Television Network will get the Farming Channel over SCI-FI Channel, Sky Australia gets more channels than what New Zealand does, and not as many repeats on sky, in NZ Sky has so Many repeats that is is almost a waste of money. Examples of dumb TV choices in New Zealand. Stargate SG1- was prime time for the first 3 seasons - got an 8:30pm slot, dissapiered for a few years then got a 3pm on a Saturday afternoon Stargate Atlantis - did 9 episodes at a 9pm slot, then ended for no reason at all, now just plays on sky as re runs. Eureka - 3pm Saturday afternoon, dvd came out first in new zealand. Jericho - 12 episodes then pulled half way through the first season. 30 rock - did 5 episodes advertised the 6th but was pulled, the show won and Emmy and was bought back to a prime time slot on a different channel. South Park - 2 Seasons behind Family Guy - we get it on dvd before we see it on TV Friends, 2 and a half men, Scrubs (all iconic tv shows) - we are sick and tried of re runs, time for new show's in this slot. putting show on hold for shows like American Idol, why cant the shift it to a different time slot and stop playing re runs. Well anyway enough of my rant. the article attached below is regarding how poorly thought out this law is, it even stats that a printer can access illegal files and cause a reason for you to be disconnected without doing anything, and this test was conducted by and employee of Telecom in the United States. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/connect/news/art...jectid=10551857 This is an article that helps explain what this law also covers, differently read this. http://creativefreedom.org.nz/story.html?id=43 All i ask is if you guys could sign the petition so that way we can keep our ISP connection. to sign it go to the bottom of the page. this Petition is the official Petition that will get submitted to the Parliament http://creativefreedom.org.nz/index.html Edited January 17, 2009 by comander starlin Share this post Link to post

comander starlin 6 Posted January 18, 2009 and yet some how this law got passed to protect the Executives of the music and movie industry, but the Artist themselves don't like the law and feel it does not speek for them, have also signed the petition, because it is not a way forward, and is breaking basic human rights. Doctor Destiny 41 Posted January 18, 2009 That doesn't get around the fact it's still technically digital theft... </devil's advocate> Share this post Link to post
comander starlin 6 Posted January 18, 2009 yea that is true but killing everyone's isp i kill their industry at the same time less and less people will buy their products, and theft? why did they not ban recording music onto tape off the radio? Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted January 19, 2009 That would be impossible unless they stopped the sale of blank audio cassettes. I'm not disagreeing with you one bit but my point still remains and that's how they see it. They completely forget how bad they **** the public and concentrate on the losses that are a result of their own ineptitude and ignorance. Share this post Link to post
Luk3us 63 Posted January 19, 2009 I don't truly understand how this law works, so forgive my ignorance. But the way I see it, random Company bitches, to my ISP that I stole their ****, my ISP cuts my service. But surely I can challenge that accusation, and thusly force my ISP to check up on me. Now that is something ISP will not like to be doing. Cause it wastes their time when they can be doing other things. Which if things get bad as I imagine they will, those ISPs could get bogged down. comander starlin 6 Posted January 19, 2009 (edited) the ISP's tried to contest it but it contest it but it got thrown out of court, and no you cannot contest it unless you take it to court. it is saying like if they bought back the death penalty, and you got accused for steeling form a shop, and instead of making you go to court the put you to death without a trial, this is where it is flawed, the lack of a physical trial. this also counts by adding music to youtube videos etc. illegal. Warner bro's have stated doing this. http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/inde...hers-continues/ you know what someone should police the music industry. comander starlin 6 Posted January 19, 2009 (edited) yip you will soon find that it will almost be a waste of time having music or movies even TV, and that can all be changed buy the government, and say no to all this bullsh*t, lol the person who craeted this law had his computer hack, and showed to have Illegally download music on his pc and also was using limewire, what a dip. who does that? and limewire? get with the times. i am just reading the offical bill now and it says that you cannot import a movie that has not yet been made available in new zealand until 9 months after the NZ version of it comes out. god could this law get any more retarded. Edited January 19, 2009 by comander starlin Share this post Link to post
Julbri 0 Posted January 20, 2009 So we can still pirate import movie, just as long it has been out for 9 months?? Share this post Link to post
Luk3us 63 Posted January 20, 2009 I don't think you were ever allowed to import a title that hadn't been rated by the NZ guys. Share this post Link to post
holloway 0 Posted January 20, 2009 (edited) Hi folks, Thanks for helping spread the word. Yesterday we reached a landmark of 4,000 people including thousands of artists against these laws. Here's a link to our press release http://creativefreedom.org.nz/story.html?id=49 . Unlike the people pushing for this law we don't have a marketing budget (we're just doing this because we care about it) so if there's anything you can do to help spread the word we'd appreciate it. Search your mind for people who use the internet and haven't heard about this issue and please tell them what you think about guilt upon accusation laws in NZ. That doesn't get around the fact it's still technically digital theft... </devil's advocate> Oh yeah, I agree. The main issue that we have is that it's alleged digital theft and that people will receive punishment before the evidence has been held up court scrutiny, and that you don't even get a trial before you are punished (thus reversing the presumption of innocence). We're not for copyright infringement that takes money away from artists, but we think everyone deserves a trial before punishment. If you have any questions just post them here Thanks, Edited January 20, 2009 by holloway Share this post Link to post

As if the mega-corporations thought you were innocent anyway. Nine times out of ten, if they catch you downloading a movie, you were downloading that movie. It's not rocket science anymore. But again, I'm not agreeing with them... just looking at it from their point of view and playing the devil's advocate. Share this post Link to post
comander starlin 6 Posted January 24, 2009 there is a new article that is on the creative freedom site regarding the law change and what the people supporting the law are talking about, and how stupid they sound with their answers, they are now at 4466 signiture and they need more, alost one more month to go. http://creativefreedom.org.nz/story.html?id=51 Share this post Link to post
comander starlin 6 Posted January 25, 2009 hay guys i just found another article that raises opposing view to what the Movie/TV/Music industry think is happening with their industry. the Monty Python Videos are now free to view on Youtube, as proper quality videos, this move gave the Monty Python dvd sale on amazon a huge surge on their products, "23,000%" that is nuts and also shows that this law is s**t. here is the official article http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/01/23/free-m...-sale-increase/ Share this post Link to post
