Steam Can Be So Annoying

Recommended Posts

This screen shot below shows why I don't like Steam. Why does it take so long to update.... actually why does it take so damn long to begin the update for the game in the first place.

All I want to do is load up FEAR 2 and finish the last part of the game, but no Steam has locked me out of the game until it downloads and installs the update I don't need. Why does it take so long, have got my Steam option set wrong or something?

The other day the Scout update pack came out for Team Fortress 2 and I fired up Steam and let it sit for about 15 minutes and it didn't start downloading the update at all until I clicked to start the game.

Right just sit there doing nothing while I browse the web and then update when I'm ready to play...

In the end I told Steam to not auto update FEAR 2. Once I turned that off it let me play. I didn't need the update to finish the game. Still enjoyed FEAR 2 though

I've had all tons of problems with Steam when just trying to play the games and mods I've got. My copy of Half Life 1 has been locked in "low violence mode" with low-res graphics despite having the graphics pack and dealing with customer support and workarounds for far too long. Now and then, a game that is entirely on my computer for sure will be "not available" for no damned reason. When a game crashes, Steam takes forever to notice and often locks up for quite a while after. Often, logging in after Steam itself crashes takes amazingly long-- and failing to wait out the painfully long login process and trying to start over will result in a "Steam is not available" kind of bull**** reply on successive attempts to start it up.

Use offline mode then.

Mine won't update UT3 at the moment, but the servers are being absolutely pounded because of the price drop, free weekend and Titan/2.0 update so it's understandable. Telling it not to auto update lets me launch.

Got Empire Total War yesterday, so now I'm using steam.

Seems alright so far. Just like X-Fire, always downloading **** with out telling me. :(

Yeah my roommate is getting UT3 as well now and it is really slow with the servers being hit so hard.

No. Steam just sucks that hard.

Which is why Steam won't last forever.

We all know Steam does not use Securom DRM.

Use offline mode then.

But this happens to games that I wish to play online, I have few single player games for Steam that I regularly play: only World of Goo comes to mind.

I do think Steam will last maybe not "forever" but for a "damn long time, too long for us to consider" because as a concept and proven marketing tool it is amazing. There just happen to be glaring issues that need to be addressed.

I don't an issue that can be solved by restarting the Steam client will be the death of it ;)

Its all the other issues that will hopefully cause it to fail. I knew empire total war used internet registration, but had known it was steam i probably wouldnt have bought it. Give me securom over steam any day. Hell i will even take starforce.

No i have just had enough problems with steam to make me hate it. For example not being able to enter my cd key in because steam was too busy. At least my wait was only a few hours, unlike others who were still getting the error 24 hours after first trying to install empire total war. And then 2 days ago my housemate tried to install fear 2. Steam crashed during the install and upon starting it up again and trying again the cd key no longer works as it "is already in use". Older versions of steam used to crash our internet connection within 30 seconds of being logged on, requiring a reboot of the modem.

I actually prefer Steam to Securom. Because my copy of RA3 and Spore wouldn't deactivate on XP 64-bit... so I lose an activation. With Steam, at least you know you can still get the game again next year (and it immediately contains all the updates). The downloading is a bit sluggish, I agree with that. Took 24 hours to download GTA4.
