sound and power

Recommended Posts

when i plug in my speakers or headphones to my computer, there is a strange continuous backround noise...i have a hunch it has to do with the power supply.

Could be many things, more details plz.

But it's probably interference, if there's alot of electronic equipment.

Try and make sure all your audio cables are running perpendicular (at right angles) to each other, rather than parallel.

Also next time you have money, get yourself some gold audio cables, helps with this sorta thing and sound cool :P

If your gonna post, make it useful malevolence.

About when the buzzing starts (ie when the computer itself starts or what?) And what the noise sounds like?

i have not tried that, good idea :P. ill start the pc with my headphones plugged in and let you know. the noise is like the humming from speakers that's volume is really loud but no audio being played, understand? yet, this sound is there regardless the volume.

no, but i was considering that. it may solve the problem and in my room i cannot use speakers at night so having wireless USB headphones would be great.

the sound is similar to how an airplane's engines sound from inside. hard to describe, and i doubt i can fix it without making a hardware adjustment to my pc build. my dad hypothesized that it is from a difference in power (voltage or watts i duno).

EDIT: also, my computer is connected to my TV (HDMI). when i change the source with my PC on to maybe the TV, and back to my PC, the audio is gone until a restart.

No trust me. You don't want USB sound devices. They're a huge pain in the ass when you swap back and forth between speakers and headphones. At least with 3.5mm sound devices hooked to the front, it takes over the speakers and uses those until you unplug them.

Have you tried using the headphones without the speakers connected?

Speaking of which, what is your computer hooked up near? There could be electronic interference.

my speakers are hooked up to my TV because: a) the noise is there when they are hooked up to my PC, and B) with the speakers hooked to the TV they work with my cable provider and xbox.

funny thing is when i have to use my headphones at night i have to switch default playback devices. this isnt such a problem though because my audio doesnt disappear like it does if i change TV output sources.

my PC is near my 32in LCD. a few feet to the left is my older PC, cable box, and Xbox. i posted a pic in my "PC Build" topic if you wanna see. the PC all the way to the right is my new one, the one with the wierd noise.

the noise isnt present with the way i have it hooked up with my TV. i have it hooked up with an HDMI and i think this is why there is no noise. this makes me think it's something to do with power.

Nope. Check this statement out.

It's not a question. It's more of a... statement. So the least I can do is to take note of it.

Ok, if you don't get the joke, nevermind.

What speakers are you using? Brand type 2.1 5.1 or ??? What power supply are you using? Brand ???watts? Details please! What sort of connection did you use?

i got the joke ;) ...

but ill have to get back to you on those type of details. im assuming its all standard stuff, and the jacks where the noise is found are RCA jacks. regular audio cable jacks. like i said my monitor is my tv and is hooked up via HDMI, the reason i think its to do with power.

EDIT 60hz 30watts...subwoofer with two satellites. right now they are hooked up to my tv via an RCA Left & Right spitter cable.

Sounds like it's your Wavetable sound card. Googling the model your system came with, I'm making an immediate and safe assumption it's a VERY old sound card. Old enough, in fact, I cannot find Vista drivers for it. After noting that detail, I'm quite certain it's the sound card. Uninstall the sound card (with the Device Manager, please; you want it completely gone), physically remove the card, and see if you get the same noise with the motherboard's onboard audio. If you do, then buy a new sound card, preferably an Auzentech X-Fi or Asus Xonar (any Xonar, they're all drop-dead awesome). If you still get noise on the new sound card, then it probably is your power supply after all. Only after you confirm that will I make further suggestions.

Kind of a buy first, ask questions later sort of scenario?

That happens when you do not have any spare parts to test what is exactly wrong in the rig. Or, try borrow a decent soundcard and PSU from a friend or neighbor?

maybe this is a eureka, but i do not have a sound card. my audio is off my MoBo. maybe this is the source of the interference.

i will soon test my headphones with my case fan turned down....

Your pc is new right?

If so, your mobo sound card should do very well unless your into intense 3d gaming, surround sound entertainment or music production.

The thing is, Nmenth, that sound card is so deathly old that newer onboard audio (especially Sigmatel-based audio that comes with P35 boards) will sound better than the old dedicated crap. Age alone is probably the culprit. It's probably better for him to stick to the motherboard's audio anyway, no matter what it is.

yea but i cannot figure out where this noise is coming from and how to get rid of it. later im going to try and turn down my fan speed see if that does anything to the noise...

So this sound your hearing, is like a low level humming sound?

I ask this because I had a set of speakers a few years that made a constant humming noise when they were powered on. Basically they were cheap crap.

What brand speakers do you have?

You say you have them connected via RCA to your TV? Perhaps you have some overly complex wiring to hook them and your getting some sort feedback? Try plugging your speakers into the 3.5mm jack on the back/front of your computer only. Just trying to paint a picture of your set up here ;)

its not the speakers. the noise is with headphones too.and i tried the front jack too, same thing..

ill take pictures of the back of my tv and back of my PC...here is the pic from the other thread...

lol- :P medieval times sword

attached- my old pc. was attached, not anymore.nothing to do with the sound

sub-yes thats my trusty subwoofer with the satellite speakers.

the other pc is the one in use mainly

girl on screen isnt nude ;)

the wires next to the sub should be sorted out? as in organized or? i dont see a problem with how it is

why would all the power cords be on the same socket? i have one socket with a surge protector which my new pc is included on.

the other sockets are my old pc, my tv, and my xbox. maybe since the tv isnt on the same socket that is the source of the noise?

EDIT:tried putting the TV on the surge protector that my PC is on. made no difference.
