new to modding, does anybody have link to basic tutorial?

Recommended Posts

Hi, guys! new to modding. Ok, i am being level with everybody here, i am stupid and has no experience at all at modding or pogramming or scripting, but after seeing so much insane move from fellow modding god, i am inspired and perhaps if i start from the very basic, i can be someone of an advance level in a distance future.........

I don't know if you get what i experienced, i have had no experience and looking at the tutorial or the documentation file of the SDK, my brain heat up and burned  . Ok, like i said before, i am stupid, but i am ok with 3dsmax and photoshop tutorial (yes, i am a graphic guy) cause they have pics and arrow pointing and stuff.....

i am hopinng if anybody can link me some real basic step by step tutorial, please? ah, if they exsist....

will be great if anybody have to time to drop in a few words on how they first got into modding and their background, eg, know codding already, or scrip and things.....

many thanks!!!

keith ^_^:kw:

yea!nod rules!!

They don't exist really. The documentation that comes with the SDK is as complete as it gets.

There are a couple here but they're very specific.

You can also browse through all the question and help threads on the following main modding hubs:

http://www.ppmsite.com/forum/index.php?f=3...6baedc6618a5ed0

http://forum.falloutstudios.net/?showforum=197

http://forums.revora.net/index.php?showforum=1477

http://www.cncmods.net/forums/index.php?

http://www.derelictstudios.net/forums/inde...p;showforum=152

That can give you ideas behind the general concepts as well as some specific things. And of course if you have the same problem as someone else does then the solutions are quite handy since you don't have to ask a question that has already been answered.

I am not into modding TW, but I think all modding is the same type of situation... it's basically like this, you try something, and it looks cool. You try something else, and it crashes. Later you find out your first attempts, as cool as they were, are junk. After trying some more things, and crashing some more as well, you become a true modder.

No one can become a modder without first being a failure, if you don't have that kind of patience, then don't get started.

MightBob - thankyou sir for the mod links. It will help my research project.

Heh - Nmenth you should get a job as a motivating speaker... you'd rake in the money!

(Maybe you can talk about nukes! I'm sure there's a big audience in North Korea.)

The obvious best advice, is start small and simple, and work your way up.

If you can't handle the difficulties in life, you can't handle life. People that expect things to always be right and good are the same people that need to see doctors because so much of their experiences are not right and good. I am not going to suppress the truth to preserve the weak, for in so doing, the weak will be left to discover the truth on their own.

Modding is no easy task, there is no Quick Guide to be a Master Modder, so if you want to take the time to learn and make 5000 mistakes along the way, then go ahead. If you want to be a modder RIGHT NOW, well that just isn't going to happen.

And I don't speak Korean.

Not everyone who sees an impossible challenge rises to it and takes it on anyway. Some people do need to be mollycoddled into order to get momentum.

Hmm that sounds pansy I know, how about fanning the embers to get the fire started! Fire = Manly = Non-Pansy. Sweet.

After all his first post was for basic instruction... he hit a wall and you dump on him. In this instance - maybe you should have kept quiet?

No Korean. For shame. How about Chinese?

Was I offensive? It was not my intention. I only meant to point out that modding is not easy to get into... for anyone, and any prospective modder needs to understand that.

No Korean. For shame. How about Chinese?

I am more familiar with Japanese, but Cantonese and simplified Chinese are not completely strange to me. Now that I think about it, I guess I do know a couple Korean words, but not enough to actually discuss nukes with the natives.

Well you'd have to ask him - but I think harsh is the word I'm looking for!

(Keith you don't mind if we borrow your thread do you?)

I much prefer Cantonese over Mandarin... I should have been more specific.

People need harsh, it is the other end of the balance of life experiences. The heavier either end of the balance becomes, so too does the opposite side change. If a multi-billionaire finds a gold coin and has one of his neighbors shot to death, the coin will be so insignificant as to mean nothing at all. If a man living in a stick and leaf lean-to in a third world war-torn anarchist country finds a gold coin and has one of his neighbors shot to death, the death (believe it or not) will be so insignificant as to mean nothing at all. This is so because the balance of life experiences is shifted for the two individuals in opposite directions, causing their counter-balances to be that much greater. Harsh is good, it makes not-harsh that much better. The goodness in life is measured against the evil, and the evil is measured against the good, totality in either direction becomes neutrality.

I much prefer Cantonese over Mandarin... I should have been more specific.

Yes... but I'm afraid that I still can't speak Cantonese efficiently enough to discuss nukes...

So if I get what you're saying, you have a twin brother somewhere in the world who likes to grow a certain fungus, and hates violence in every form, and is a kind, and gentle soul with never a bad word to say about anyone.

I understand what you're saying about neutrality, but in essential you are abandoning your social responsibility. You're saying that you can act like a ****, knowing that in the big scheme of things, someone out there will be your warm-fuzzy opposite balancing everything out. I'm saying that people are individual and diverse, and you must use the one-size-fits-all-approach. You must first determine the personality of the person in question - and the correct motivating force to achieve the desired result. You're good at behaving towards EALA... why can't you follow the same attitude with fellow fans:- "I've got nothing nice or complimentary to say, so I've got nothing to say." I just think your harsh comment served no purpose in helping the guy... which is why he posted!

The world could use more C&C mods, and instead of helping the cause you've working against it.

Re: Nukes

But you also forget that your presentation will probably be very media intensive, show your banned sig and watch the applause.

And hey, it's still okay to use translators. It's how the secret police keeps tabs on you anyway.

Not at all what I'm saying. Twins... what nonsense...

I am saying that if you live a life of all good things, when you experience a bad thing, it is that much worse. Whereas, if you live a horrible life and experience a good thing, it is that much better. Therefore, you should not always expect good, but accept the inevitable bad with the good.

I understand what you're saying about neutrality, but in essential you are abandoning your social responsibility. You're saying that you can act like a ****, knowing that in the big scheme of things, someone out there will be your warm-fuzzy opposite balancing everything out.

No, no one out there is my balance. The balance is not physical, it is experience alone, it is mental.

You must understand, I am not saying for every one evil that exists, there is a countering good. I am saying for every evil out there, the good is made better, however, for every good out there, the evil is made worse.

My unkindness is not balanced out by kindness, the kindness is made greater by my unkindness, but my unkindness is still unkindness (though, I did not mean to be unkind to keithktam).

I'm saying that people are individual and diverse

Of course they are.

As I said, it was not my intention to be offensive. What I was saying was a warning. He said,

modding seems an impossible thing, how do you guys first get into this??

and so I replied, explaining that it is not a simple thing to get into, because there is no easy way. All modders start out this way, not knowing what they are doing and screwing up and making nooby mods, it is a step in the path to becoming a modder, but is an uneven and rocky step that you have to have the patience and will to get past.

The world could use more C&C mods, and instead of helping the cause you've working against it.

Not so. It is better that a new modder be forewarned that modding is not easy then to discover that on their own and be discouraged.

I guess I should have kept the philosophical part out and just better explained myself in the beginning...

But you also forget that your presentation will probably be very media intensive

I hate media and I treasure anonymity. I'll pass.

 it is ok guys!! interesting talk you guys have. i like the philosophy too you know.

will look at the sample code again and try to ananlyze them and the plan is to change stats for units and structure see how that go.

i remember back in to the dark day for my quest in 3D, i use 3dsmax by the way, it was like LOR quest, except only one crew, me. it was really hard, master all million and i do mean million of function to get to where i am now with no real tutorial..........it was a ten on and off journey.

i guess i will try to aim to the wall and be ready for it!!

Oh, since i am a max forum guy so i don't nescessary hide my id, yes, my name is keith and i am a cantonese, and you know what............nuke them!!!!!!!!!

Heh... it was a joke. Does everything need a smiley face to be obvious?

Oops... I completely mis-read your point. I apologise. I thought you were excusing harsh behaviour because of a ying-yang philosophy... that someone else out there would provide the balance to the cosmic stuff of the universe for your hashness.

Back to the subject at hand, I now understand what your saying, well I think I do. :)

People with a sucky life appreciate the good times because they are so rare. So that gives you permission to be harsh because when they achieve something despite your "best efforts" they'll appreciate it that much more.

My point was that people have different motivators. Some people respond to harshness, and see it as a challenge. Other people (most) crumble in the face of such negativity. I think you jumped the gun. You say your response was a forewarning that modding is difficult, and I say it's redundant.

The post you are referring to, is the one where he's already admitted it being difficult. So this is where I suggest you should have restrained from posting. How does it help???

Should have taken your "lead" from his first post which was a request for help!

And if you weren't going to help, then you shouldn't have posted.

I hate media and I treasure anonymity. I'll pass.

Media... as in videos of big-ass nuclear explosions. Not as in reporters.

Besides... anonymity... is not a word I would use to describe your forum behaviour.

He was saying it was difficult for him, I was saying it was difficult for everyone. In other words, it is not to be unexpected or even avoided (as it cannot be).

Oh, have I revealed who I am on these forums then? I thought I was still fairly anonymous...

And I'm saying the level of difficulty for one or many is redundant. He has already established that. He was asking for help to get through the difficulty. All you've done is reinforce modding is difficult, and therefore have not helped him. I'm saying help the guy or sssh up!

:)

Well anonymous by definition is:-

  1. Having an unknown or unacknowledged name.
  2. Having an unknown or withheld authorship or agency.
  3. Having no distinctive character or recognition factor.
And because everyone of your posts, has NMENTH attached to it, you fail the anonymity test IMO.

:)

You're talking about keeping your identity secret... you caped crusader.

Maybe you should look for a side-kick... I already know what 'signal' the commissioner can contact you:- mushroom clouds!

Since I used the word, your choice interpretation is irrelevant.

No Nmenth, he asked for help, you didn't help.

Ha Nmenth, it's not an interpretation it's the correct usage of the word. When sign a post with your name, it's no longer anonymous, it's your post!

If you want to debate with words, you have to choose the right ones.

What help there was to give was given by MightyBOB!, my response was not to his first post, mine was to his third, specifically, the part I quoted.

Yes, the posts are mine, but who am I? I call myself Nmenth here, but you don't know if that's my real name (you probably don't even know if it's a real word... I've only met one person that correctly identified what Nmenth means, and that was by accident).

Unless you can answer who I am, beyond Nmenth, CNCNZ forum moderator that likes mushroom clouds, I am still anonymous, by definition, but not necessarily interpretation.

It is very common for people to act abnormally online because of their anonymity. <- correct usage.

Nmenth, however, is even more abnormal offline than he reveals himself on CNCNZ. <- me giving up a little of my anonymity. <- correct usage again, but in a different form.

I suppose you did not see that his location on his profile is from London? People who speak Cantonese are usually from Hong Kong.

Oh, by the way, Gben and Nymenth, you guys need to stop quarreling each other. You're going off-topic there.

There is no Y in Nmenth. When we get too far off-topic, I'll reprimand us and lock the topic. This isn't front page news, we can get slightly off-topic.

You are still incorrectly using the word anonymity I'm afraid.... and I quote:-

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/anonymity

anonymity

1 : the quality or state of being anonymous

2 : one that is anonymous

following to the root...

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/anonymous

anonymous

1 : not named or identified <an anonymous author> <they wish to remain anonymous>

2 : of unknown authorship or origin <an anonymous tip>

3 : lacking individuality, distinction, or recognizability <the anonymous faces in the crowd> <the gray anonymous streets — William Styron>

You're still confusing secret or hidden for anonymous. Back in the day when we had guest accounts, that could be considered an anonymous post... but even those had account numbers (if I recall correctly)... so as soon as you made two posts from the same person it can no longer be considered anonymous. I'm not questioning your secret identity, I'm stating by definition that every post with a signature is no longer anonymous... it has individuality, distinction and is recognizable. You're like 'Zoro" a masked crusader who leaves his mark wherever he posts!

Oh, by the way, Gben and Nymenth, you guys need to stop quarreling each other. You're going off-topic there.

But I'm having fun. :)

Besides this is not off-topic this is nation-building or at least forum membership stuff of legends here. I'm discussing how to treat new people, and how to encourage them to achieve their goals.
