Not as far fetched as it sounds really. Europe especially is undergoing such turmoil. The single Euro currency is buckling under enormous strain of debt ridden Greece (Although the UK is the world's worst). Germany (Believed to be the strongest European Country) has just dug itself into a hole by handing out to those who need it, and now find they're a bit short.

 

The planet is on the verge of Social-economic collapse, and there's not a single thing that can really be done to save it. Even if some recovery is made. All it will take is another recession to send the world into a state of inevitable oblivion. I'm very much guessing this will happen within the next 2 years at least. Hey, maybe those 2012 Mayan predictions aren't to be sniffed at, maybe we are all screwed!

Also I really have to say, I doubt that these 'territories' will become "part of" or "under the influence" of other nations. If it were to happen, I think they would just be their own nations. (Maybe allied to other nations though.) Take Mexico for example. They don't have the military strength to stop the drug cartels in their own country, much less occupy or take over 9 US states. (Especially not Missouri, where we keep all of our B2 bombers.)

I could see the Midwest being annexed by Canada, I don't see much opposition to that. I think the Eastern states would form their own country, strongly tied to Europe, but independent. Same with the South, independent but strongly tied to Mexico. The West would probably some kind of Chinese colony.

I think if it came to the point where they were so pissed of at the rest of America, allying with Mexico would be plausible. Or they could even take it over.

Mexican army is a bit too busy fighting against drug dealers to invade the US. Even if they tried there would be so many people with weapons in the south they would have a hard time taking over.
