Treyarch: “negative” gamers are industry’s greatest problem

Recommended Posts

It would seem Treyarch don't like the hardcore fans....

Treyarch community manager Josh Olin has said the games industry’s biggest challenge is the culture of “negative” gamers.

Speaking to NowGamer, Olin highlighted the risk of innovation in gaming culture.

“Too many developers who try new things are getting burned by “pundits” and angry entitled fans who look to be contrarian, sometimes simply for the sake of being contrarian,” he said.

“The only thing this attitude aims to achieve is stunt that creativity and innovation even further, which is something that no rational gamer looking to be entertained would want to do.”

Olin said the “social culture” of gaming is moving in a “negative direction”.

“More and more gamers seem to forget what this industry is all about. It’s a creative industry – the most creative form of entertainment in existence,” he added.

The hypocrisy being spouted by Treyarch is very amusing indeed. You can't get more unoriginal, and more formulated than an FPS. What is their idea for DLC? Map packs, yes very innovative.

Honestly if they want to use the 'creative license' defence then maybe they should do something creative.

Hardcore fans and over-conservative fools are not synonims. We have too many of the latter in the C&C community.

Treyarch seems to listen to the other ones.

Hardcore elitist fans, the fans that are never pleased with anything, are present in every popular gaming community. C&C, CoD, Halo.... you name it they are there.

Yes, but not all hardcore fans are over-conservative, denying any change.

It's a wonder, though. People hate it when something changes in the gameplay, and then complain that new games give nothing new. Gotta love gaming communities

Is Treyarch wrong? Hell no they're not. Gamers are easily the most difficult to please group of consumers ever to have existed. Nothing is ever good enough, nothing is ever satisfying enough and the really 'hardcore' compare every new game in a series to past games (looking at Sonic fans as a prime example). The really hardcore are the most annoying people on the planet and they should be ignored by every game company in existence. They complain nonstop about every non-issue imaginable. Then they ruin it for everyone.

That's not entirely true. It's just that most gamers can just dump their opinion on the internet, while in real life the annoying nitpicking consumers are ignored.

No, it still holds true. The Internet just made everyone's moronic opinions privy to the entire world.

I beg to differ.

This is interesting and all, but one has to make a distinction between someone who sees the flaws... And someone who sees ONLY the flaws. Sometimes we get too much of the latter, but very few of the former. It is important to remember that there is no such thing such as a perfect game, even the ones I love the most (read: Halo and StarCraft). Also, polarizing people is an old business model... It is okay to polarize people, i.e. people either hate or love you, so long as they are not INDIFFERENT to you (read: all publicity is GOOD publicity), and if you cater to the pole of people that are more plentiful, then the polarizing you did will have paid off.

And as for the internet becoming the dumpster of moronic opinions... Two quotes: 1. 99% of everything is junk, 2. When there is a potentially life-/world-altering technology, someone will always find stupid uses for it.
