Half-Life 2 System Requirements & Release News

Recommended Posts

For those following Half-Life 2....

Valve has revealed some basic system requirements detailing what it will take to run Half-Life 2; as well as what it will take to run it well. Here's the details:

Minimum requirements:

1.2Ghz processor;

256MB RAM;

DirectX 7-capable graphics card;

Windows XP/2000/ME/98

Recommended requirements:

2.4Ghz processor;

512MB RAM;

DirectX 9-capable graphics card;

Windows XP/2000

We suspect that most avid PC gamers will be somewhere in-between; and with Half-Life 2's release date still unconfirmed there is plenty of time to upgrade any necessary parts.

Valve has reportedly submitted a release candidate of Half-Life 2 to the game's publisher Vivendi Universal. If all is well and VU approve the candidate, the game will go gold and presumably release a few weeks later.

The hype behind Half-Life 2 has eased somewhat lately due to the amount of false reports which in turn have created skepticism over any genuine news. This update seems to be the real deal however and hopefully we'll be reporting that the game has gone gold in the near future.

If you have Sierra's gaming client steam, you can now download Half life 2 ready for it's release.. I decided to play Counter strike last night and it come up with "Pre-load Half life 2 for release"... I thought OK, could do, but then decided against it as I don't have enough space on my system to download stuff I'm not gonna use

But the $64,000 question is how much RAM on our graphics cards will we need to run this beauty or if not whats the lowest spec card you can run it on... My inkling is that it'll be a 32MB graphics card... hang on I'll check planet half life...

Nope nothing other than what is already up there... but they're saying a card minimum of supporting DX6 even, so when you consider that was around 1998 - 99 time what they seem to be saying is that the best cards that could run half life then... will now be the cards to run at minimum spec... Well that's how I interpret it.

You'll need a 64Mb card I rekon

It can be run on a 32Mb card. Ive been using the beta version of Counter Strike source using only a 32Mb Geforce 2 mmx and it runs very smoothly. Also with the CS source you get a performance test to see how your pc can handle Half-life 2. I get 48 fps with a 1.4Ghz Athlon, 256Mb Ram and the 32Mb Geforce 2 mmx.

Excellent I thought that'd be the case... looks like I won't have to change graphics cards afterall since this is the only PC game I'm interested in buying now.... until another C&C comes out that is..

Looks like my 64MB Geforce 2 MX400 has still got some life in it yet :P

That means I should be ok with the upgrades I made a few weeks ago :thumbsup:

- Athlon XP 2700 (2.2 ghz)

- 512 DDR 400

- Geforce 4 Ti4200 (reused part)

On the other hand there is going more happening and there will be bigger maps in Half-Life 2 compared to CS Source.
