Throwback Thursday for 12th November

Recommended Posts

This weeks edition of Throwback Thursday goes back to C&C Renegade in 2002. Early in the game, Havoc disobeys orders and decides to "liberate" a Hovercraft, basically stealing it. This cut-scene provides one of the cooler and more memorable parts of the single player campaign, as we get to see a screenshot from the the first Commando mission in the original Command & Conquer. This screenshot then morphs into the 3D world that is C&C Renegade.

Remember, you can click on the preview above to see a larger and more detailed image. Check back again next Thursday for another Throwback. Send in your ideas for future instalments. We encourage you to share this on social media using the hash tags #ThrowbackThursday, #CnCTBT and #CNCNZTBT.

The first commando mission (GDI mission 6, Nod mission 9) looks nothing like that. The "screenshot" might actually be photoshopped together, at least parts of it, like the road leading to the power plant and the hovercraft.

Loved that moment...

*sigh* if only the SP experience had more of this...

It was still a pretty nice touch.

Indeed. Would've been more effective if the art style of Renegade matched the one of C&C1 closer though. For example the CY in Renegade is closer to the TS CY than the C&C1 CY.

What's also interesting is that NOD seems to own two Orcas in the cutscene.

As you can see:

Interesting how they went with Nod in grey colours in that cut-scene, while the game itself features Nod in red.

It might have been a bit of a chaotic art direction, but I would have loved if Renegade had FMV cut-scenes like the prior C&C titles. I saw it as a central part of the C&C DNA and was disappointed to look at uncanny polygon faces.
