Throwback Thursday for 31st December

Its the final Throwback Thursday for 2015. And to end it for the year we are looking back another C&C game we never got. The cancelled C&C Renegade 2. Westwood never really got out the design and concept stage with this one, but the early work they did was interesting. It would have been based in the Red Alert 2 time line and bridge the gap between the fall of the Soviets and the rise of Nod. The plan was to use an upgraded version of the W3D engine from C&C Renegade. Unfortunately we have to file this game with the long list of other cancelled and failed Command & Conquer games that have accumulated over the years.

Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. Don't forget to check out the Throwback Thursdays archives if you've missed a week. Check back again next Thursday for another Throwback. Send in your ideas for future instalments. We encourage you to share this on social media using the hash tags #ThrowbackThursday, #CnCTBT and #CNCNZTBT.

So that where war studio get the icon from xD

They currently work on a game that will be on the unreal engine

I "part of" the group but can't say I really am as I don't have the knowledge in order to help them nor happened to really help them even once yet ;)

But so far it look promising

Can't reveal anything I know though (and I don't know much eh eh)

Have to admit, as much as I like Renegade, I happy that they scapped RG2 - Renegade had great gameplay, but the whole RA => TD idea is stupid beyond imagination. It makes no sense storywise, the tech development from RA to TD also makes no sense and I think it kinda lessens the impact of the whole modern/near future setting that TD/TS/TW had.

Not to mention that Renegade was a rather lose adaption of TD, so who knows how a Red Alert setting would have turned out.

Now that I think about, its kinda supprising that there is no indie game with Renegade style gameplay...

RA1 was always supposed to tie in to TD. That was Westwood's original intention.

When EA bought Westwood in '98, they also bought another studio in Irvine that they dubbed Westwood Pacific. They were "ordered" to make RA2, which broke those plans. Westwood had two plans to fix this: one was C&C 3: Tiberian Incursion and the other was Renegade 2.

Connecting Red Alert to Tiberium universes makes perfect sense to explain how the hell Nod got such advanced weaponry for a "quasi-terrorist organization" prior to the start of the First Tiberium War and how they held Europe in their control (in the canon GDI campaign, you must remember UNGDI getting panned by the media due to strong Nod propaganda). I really need to improve my article from three years ago to mindstorm on that better :P

Not to mention how Kane was in Soviet ranks 50 years before the events of Tiberian Dawn and didn't age a day :P

I know that - the soviet ending made the connection perfectly clear, but TDs story can stand perfectly on its one (like it was intended). It never needed to have a time travel origin story attached to it.

Particularly if you need fan theories to explain the plot holes (an lets not mention RA2/3 here as they screw the story up even more).

(dont get me wrong, I loved RA1, but the connection with TD was superfluous)

And it doenst explain anything about Nods weaponry (which was allready explained in the TD manual anyway) as every single unit shown in TD was either made up or based on real US military vehicles, so giving Nod strong ties with the soviet government made no sense. Not to mention that Russia was part of GDI anyway....

AFAIK, the only mention of Russia in the Tiberium universe is when LEGION reactivated the Marked of Kane in a secret Siberian base in Kane's Wrath.

In Tiberian Dawn, Russia is not present on the European map, but countries around it are mostly Nod-aligned at the start of the First Tiberium War. Ukraine may have been "neutral" at first, but it eventually fell to Nod hands. (source: Tiberian Dawn files, general.mix\europe.wsa)

I admit that in Tiberian Sun it appears as mostly GDI, but apparently the leadership was weak when Nod had everything northeastern of the Caspian Sea (source: Tiberian Sun files, tibsun.mix\sidenc01.mix) and implanted a whole army of cyborgs (relatively) more advanced to those used in the Second Tiberium War.

Hence, it's plausible Nod used Soviet technology to spread their influence. There's no other possible way of getting so much support, especially from former communist countries. So I don't know how it seems to be believed Russia is GDI-aligned :P

Agreed that the Tiberium universe can stand on its own leaving this little backstory open, though.

Well, during one GDI Mission briefing its clearly associated with GDI.

Kinda interesting that China is marked as Nod, never noticed that before.
