How long do you want to live?

Recommended Posts

that freak Aubrey de Grey looks like he'll live to 45 if he's LUCKY... good lord

have you noticed that all the health food, health-conscious types are the most sickly and malnourished looking people you'll ever see? What's the deal with that?

Everything he said is plausable.. So i don't know why you have to succumb to judging people on their appearance...

Thats just childish...

I think that making basic judgments based on appearance entirely valid. It's childish when you can never learn to look past that. Since I don't know the guy, his appearance and ideas are all I'm left with, and both are pretty ridiculous. I originally come from the Left Coast of America (California), and I know that type of health-obsessed "all natural" food eating person very well.

And no, the ideas are not plausIble. They sound interesting on paper, but as far as realistic application goes, we're a long way from anything like that. If they had anything dramatic or revolutionary, they'd give examples, numbers, etc. The article gives no specifics of any kind, but mentions a "Methusela" project with mice. If there was any promise in his ideas, they'd have results from that project with the mice. This is nothing but empty, sensationalized speculation. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true......

Things break down and decay over time. It is just the basic nature of matter. Everything is slowly moving from a point of high order to a point of chaos, or entropy. It's the second law of thermodynamics. In order to keep a person alive for that long, we would have to suspend that trend towards entropy, and we just simply don't have the means to do it.

That hippy sure won't be the first to figure it out

The "hippy" as you so subtly put it, clearly states that we currently have the technologies to battle the ageing process to the point of giving extended life, say add another 10 - 20 years. If we put these methods into action, then as the years go by we will create even more advanced methods of fighting the ageing process and maybe add another 30 - 40 years on.

Everyone knows that these practices can't guarantee eternal life, and the thought of living to 1000 is just rediculous, but these methods can give extended life which is an entirely plausable theory.

The hippy doesn't know what he's talking about. Once again, nothing specific is said at all. He was probably just tripping on acid at the time. Besides, if such revolutionary stuff was going on, I'm sure I would have heard about it somewhere other than an obscure BBC report.

Yes, it is r-I-diculous, and no, it is not plaus-I-ble. No "methods" of any kind were mentioned! Do you know something I don't?

Everyone ignore the hippy

He's A doctor. He works at a University...

So umm what are your qualifications again?

lol. Its interesting. But I don't think you guys need to bitch bout wether its real or not.

...have you met many "university doctors?" Yikes. What really matters in this whole thing is results. "Qualifications" will only get you so far, and all this is is sensationalism from a hippy afraid of death. Take it with a grain of salt.

I am a college student studying biology pretty intesively.... how about you, luk3us?

Ah well, I suppose being open minded is one of those things only a select few can handle. :)

oh, that's cute. You must be so proud to be part of that select few! Wow, I feel almost ashamed to be in contact with someone of such enlightened status. Will you... teach me to be like you?? I want to take pseudo-intellectual college hippies seriously too!! Oh, if only....

Seriously, though. Only idiots without any ideas of their own or personal convictions are truly "open minded." When you know that something is just plain wrong, I think that it is more that alright to "close your mind" to it. Are you open minded when it comes to debating the answer to 1+1 as well? I'm pretty close minded on that one. I say it's 2. But hey, if you want to rise above me and open your mind to other possibilities, then be my guest. As for me, I think I'll keep myself grounded in reality.

Thanks for the attempted put down, though.

a stretch, I agree :) , but I'm just pretty fed up with the whole "open mindedness" thing in general.... that term is REALLY starting to eat at me. My college campus has gotten pretty annoying in that regard.

Ok, so you think your the intellectual elite in your college and you spend all your time in your campus studying.

So your a geek right? I mean, not having anything even remotely positive to say on a matter lke this must make you an ass hole.

hmm.... let me see if I can grab hold of some of the logic in that last statement.... ok, to answer some of your well-phrased questions, no, I am not a geek who spends all my time on campus studying (I'm 6'2, weigh 190 lbs, play football, and am currently bench pressing 225 lbs).... I just happen to know what the hell I'm talking about. The "educational elitists" are people who think they know much more than they do, and they tend to exist in large numbers on college campuses, especially in America (I'm not so sure about other parts of the globe). I am reacting negatively towards the article because I have heard the SAME nonsense repeatedly... there are similar programs and research groups ALL OVER THE PLACE in the San Francisco Bay Area (and elsewhere in the states), all of whom have acheived NOTHING in about 40 years. Average life expectancy has hardly changed in this generation at all... These "life-extension" or "immortality" research groups are mostly products of the '60s who are afraid of dying, and who grasp onto unrealistic notions like those expressed in the article (people in this generation living to 1000? Alright....). I'm not saying that nothing positive can be gleaned from it; I'm just saying that the article is almost completely worthless.

Calm down, dude. Maybe age will bring you understanding. Keep in mind, also, that we are writing in a COMMAND AND CONQUER GAMING website. Calling someone a geek here is pretty ironic . No offense to everyone here (I'm here too!). It's just a typical geek stereotype- not necessarily accurate

I didn't ask if you were gay...

But jeez ok, your a geek with muscles. Alot of angles i could take on that last post of crap, but im going to stop now myself becuase this is just getting old now....

oh come now... it's kind of entertaining. I love seeing bad logic go haywire. Now you're saying something about being gay? Where the hell did that come from? Hahaha... the last resort of someone cornered. How very pathetic. Don't worry though- I'm probably one of the straightest people you'll meet. You know those crazy, extremist conservative, Bush-supporting Americans you hear about? I'm one of them. I still don't even get what you're so pissed off about. You seem to be a very bitter person... this is about lu3us' article, remember? Take a deep breath... it'll all be ok.

Well I don't want to get involved in the argument of weather it's possible or not. But people living to 1000 will be irrisponsible, think of the economey! No way would we be able to pay pensions if people were living 'till 1000! The system would collapse - it's already pretty bad in the UK.

But if they are able to repair cell & crap like that the way he said then you wouldnt need to retire until you were... ever! Just raise the retirement age a few hundred years & everything will be fine.

yeah, until we run out of space...

the fact is that these things are interesting to think about, but really just aren't gonna happen... at least not while we're alive (with our 80 year +/- lifespans)

yeah, it's pretty bad here in the US too. Social Security is bankrupt, and we're still handing out checks. I say we privatize it
