Putin Laments the "catastrophe" of Soviet demise

 

Moscow - President Vladimir Putin lamented the demise of the Soviet Union in some of his strongest language to date, saying in a nationally televised speech before parliament Monday that it was "the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.

 

In his annual adress to lawmakers, top povernment officials and political leaders, Putin also sought to reassure skittish investors about Russia's investment climate - just two days before a ruling in the tax evasion and fraud trial of oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

 

His statements on the collapse of the Soviet Union and its effects on Russians, at home and abroad, come as the country is awash iin nostalgia just two weeks before the 60th anniversary of the end in WWII in Europe.

Nostalgia feelings are on the rise in Germany too of the Security and garuntee of food and employment from back in the days of East and West Germany. And after the collapse of the Soviet Union, something like 70%+ of their nuclear arsenal was left "unattended" and cant be located now.Sometimes, I wonder whats going on on this planet.

 

As long as they hold off the war until the US and UK complete their Rail Guns...

It's a scary thought... who knows what's going on in Russia. History has taught us that in times of economic desparation, countries will do radical and crazy things (post WWI Germany anyone?). The sentimentality that Putin expressed about the Soviet Union's demise is.... unsettling. :shock:

It is very unsettling...maybe he'll pull a Romanov in the next few years? All joking aside, the E.U. and the U.S. wouldn't just be unhappy, they'll probably be furious. I guess we can only sit back and watch, and maybe prepare. But I wouldn't get paranoid yet. :lol:

US person Condalezza Rice was telling Putin the other day not to worry about the increased US military presence in Asia, it was to deal with terrorists, and would be removed in a few short years. Now what would Putin be worrying about US troops for? Hmm.....

Again, one wonders...maybe he's digging them up and dismantling them. Mind you, that's a mammoth task in itself, there's like, how many? at least 20,000 unaccounted for? Something like that, right?

It would me a miracle if the Russians got them all up and dismantled and not one of them went missing, either by terrorists or others.....In fact, its a miracle right now that terrorists havent got hold of a few and havent used them.

Bingo. Bottom line.... the UN sucks. Sanctions mean nothing if they aren't enforced. The UN is an impotent, spineless, and corrupt organization. If you can't already tell, I'm not a big fan of them :wink:

Next thing you know, it'll be "Cold War II" only, heated up to about a billion degrees celcius in the form of nuclear explosions. :roll: Can't wait to see what the ruskies will do to the South Pacific. Hopefully our big brothers will do something about it. But here's hoping it actually -dosen't- come to that sort of thing, last thing we need is another war. Screw the UN. Here's hoping they get replaced by something in the next decade, or at least in our lifetimes.

You ever wonder if North Korea or any other country with nukes (if they actually have any) got them from the U.S.S.R. ? I do.

The USSR had like 20,000 nukes, and the UN has acounted for what, half of one? There are lots around the planet in the hands of fanatics. But most of those are short or medium range missiles. The real deals mounted on the ICBMs are still missing. 80 Megatons multiplied by 20,000 = "Oh ****! Thats what they were saving them for!!"

Volcanoes, lighting, storms, nuclear blasts, sun storms....all so amazingly beautiful, yet all so amazingly destructive.....goes to show man kind cant even make a doomsday weapon with making a pretty picture out of it first....
