Idea for mod: Australia vs Indoneasia

Recommended Posts

I have an idea for a mod that would change USA and China to Australia and Indoneasia, with maybe a campaign or at least a storyline and ideas for units. Maybe even have the GLA changed to drug runners or something. And before you ask, yes, this is inspired by the Schapelle Corby case.

The basic storyline would be tensions are high over the continual cases of Australians arrested in Indoneasia over drug smuggling, and relations between the two countries deteriorate. If you play as Australia, you will learn that the government has continued to support Indoneasia in it's counterterrorist efforts until an Australian task force is attacked by Indoneasia. If you play as Indoneasia the storyline involves Australia pulling out all support, which is considered an act of war. This wouldn't just be country bashing though, if you wanted to we could have it so that the drug runners are trying to play the countries off against each other.

Now as for possible units I have a few ideas. Australia's infantry could be much the same except use the Styer Aug rather than the Carbine. SAS commandos could replace Colonel Burton. F-18s could replace Raptors. The Apache could replace the Commanche. APCs and light tanks could replace the Crusader and Paladin. Indoneasia could be modeled after General Kwai and specialise in infantry.

So, let me know if such a mod would hold interest and I will work out details of units, storylines and missions and see if I can find a modder interested in making this a reality.

Dont know if people would pick this up as a "real" war. Too many might think its too much like GLA vs GLA vs GLA

You will have to explain this to me. GLA vs GLA vs GLA?

There is a somewhat big chunk of C&C fans who complain about the GLA being stupid side that could actually hope to chalenge China and the US. Some might say the forces in your mod would be too similar. To much stealth and sneaking, not enough actual tanking and fighting.

Not that its a bad idea for a mod, be a different look on playing RTS for a change.

If the GLA or some terrorist faction (Jimar Islamiah perhaps) were to be involved, I had in mind they might be similar to the Iraqi insurgents, or maybe you would have to stop them before they bomb civillians. One idea I had was that they would garrison buildings every chance they get. This is something real terrorists do, in that even if they are killed they get good media, as a church for example had to be destroyed in order to get to them. Were someone to find a way to have the International Rating you have in one China mission appear as well then it could make for a tense and more real world game, in that you have to stop the terrorists but not destroy buildings they garrison or use nuclear weapons that would make you look bad.

As for Australia and Indoneasia, they would admitably not have the armour of China, as they simply do not have them. A good comparison to their military strength would be the vehicles in Joint Operations, or for a C&C comparison the Allies in the original Red Alert. If a modder interested was this way inclined, he could boost the military muscle of the sides by having USA for example send in reinforcements in the form of Paladin tanks or some such that the country would not otherwise have.

cool, the garison idea makes sense. Also they would be radar invisible until they fired on you, cause in RL terrorists hide among the civilians.

Yes, that would be a great idea. One thing I have wanted in games like Rainbow Six is where there would be times where there would be a terrorist amongst a crowd of civillians, and you have to pick him off without shooting any of them. The same idea would work very well in a mod, as even if Australia and Indonesia do go to war I doubt they would kill civillians to get at them.

And their buildings could have a camouflage feature making them look like local civilian buildings.

I like the idea Leang...though, how about a NZ vs Australia war? Of course, it wouldn't make much sence, but think of some aussie and NZ stereotypes (I've done one in another thread, in which I suggested a Stereotypical Maori as a unit :P ). Although that's slightly off topic, it's an idea to provoke a laugh from both sides of the Tasman in the CNC Community.

Hrm...as for an idea, Indonesia's terrorists, if they had any in this hypothetical mod, and like all terrorists, would be able to make anything a weapon if they could get their hands and the reasources into it. Therefore it seems fair that Australians would have an ability to disable civilian vehicles in such a way as they could not be used as a suicide weapon, for example.

Correction.... the spelling is JEMAAH ISLAMIAH :D

Such a mod would be good for a fantasy, off the wall (okay, more off the wall) mod for Red Alert. Why here as opposed to Generals? Several reasons: one is it does not play on current politics the way Generals does (as far as I know Australia and New Zealand have been allies forever apart from things such as cricket and rugby) where as an AustralianIndoneasian mod shamelessly takes on the situation of drug smugglers and the delicate political climate there. Two, a Red Alert mod would allow for all manner of wild ideas (sheep, shearers, footballers, boomerang throwers, ect) in an enviroment that already has time travel and mind control. That, and were the mod to be serious enough to have voice talent, we could have someone imitating Tanya make as many Australian and New Zealand jokes as the modders can think of. Generals, on the other hand, plays it pretty straight. The most curious thing I had found in the game is some of the voice acting, but I had commented on this before. And third, a basic mod to change the sides would not require a lot of work, as USA and China in Generals resemble the Australian and Indoneasian armies. I am not sure if this is the case, but I think to create entirely new sides would be doable in Red Alert but more of a challenge in Generals, with it being a more advanced game.

Or Indoneasia. Even if Abu Bakar Bashier did escape justice I am sure they would not want further terrorist acts. That would be a great idea. We could bring back the Engineers that could disable civillian vehicles and prevent them from being used, as well as other roles they could play from the more traditional capturing and healing of buildings to new ideas such as being able to shut down all the oil refineries, preventing funds from being earned.

  Well, I never said that Generals should be the one for modding..Red Alert sounds like a much more viable idea mind you :P Cheers for that.

RA2 mod can be done pretty quickly if put some spit and elbow grease in. Generals you need to hire out a year of borrowed time to get a half a mod up that runs well, and still, the problems can be endless......go RA2 8) mod

  True that dude. How's that sound Leang? Aussie vs Indonesia in the RA2 frame of things?

I would be happy with an original C&C mod. The reason I thought Generals was because it would not need a lot of modding for a basic changing of sides. USA Air Force or Superweapons general and China's Infantry general are the most accurate representations of Australia's and Indoneasia's forces. But if something similar were to be done for Red Alert or something similar that would be great.

And Acerz, my comments on your mod were not a criticism. Not at all. It would be a good laugh to see it become a reality. I just think some mods would be better suited for certain C&C's better than others. A Star Wars mod for example would best befit Tiberian Sun, a mod featuring Al Qaeda would work best in Generals, heck, they are in the game really. If my mod would be too difficult for Generals then the original Red Alert would be a fine game for it, as the Allies are an excellent portrayal of Australian military forces.

Are you still interested in creating this mod because back in april I posted something similar to this in the planetcnc forums to see if anyone wanted to help create this mod so as you can imagine I was quite suprised to see how similar this sounded. I had the ASLAV coded and was starting work on the Tiger. I was just using existing USA models untill i could get some help. Unfortunatly I couldnt get any help so the mod died. So if anyone still wants to create this i can see if I can find whats left of the mod.
