Luk3us 63 Posted August 19, 2005 'Mate' banned from Australian parliament 19 August 2005 It may be Australia's universally accepted term of address but "mate" became a forbidden word in their parliament yesterday. In an edict that lasted less than a day, parliamentary security staff were ordered to stop greeting visitors as "mate". The daily brief circulated yesterday to the staff who screen visitors said officers were required "to treat any visitors to Parliament House with respect and courtesy and not address them as 'mate' or use similar colloquialisms". The secretary of the Department of Parliamentary Services, Hilary Penfold, last night described the wording as "unfortunate" and said today's brief "will take a rather different form". And people wonder why I think Aussies are stupid... Share this post Link to post

Sonic 296 Posted August 19, 2005 What do you mean with "mate" :? "Mate" is a very New Zealand or Aussie thing to say. The Aussies would probably use it the most though. Sayings like "Hows it going mate", "G'Day mate" or "Yeah mate". Its normal to us, strange to other countries. Share this post Link to post

Waraddict 0 Posted August 19, 2005 Shows you that now and again people just have to use common sense and draw the line in laws. I really hate people who insist on silly laws or carrying out a law that so obviously shouldn't be applied in a certain unique situation. Perhaps they should write a law 'All laws are subject to common sense'. Share this post Link to post
Alphabear 11 Posted August 19, 2005 the reason the security guards were told they couldnt say it was because it sounded unprofesional as it is the parliament building and with important guests around they didnt want their security guards talking slang Share this post Link to post
Guest Rabbit Posted August 20, 2005 Hah... you think that's a wierd law? A law was passed in my state a few years back saying you cant wiggle while you dance. Share this post Link to post
General Leang 0 Posted August 21, 2005 Look mate, what is wrong with you? If you want to do something about the maturity of Parliment mate then maybe start with the in fighting. I tell you what mate, watching the politics on TV means there is no need to watch any of the other dramas. And mate, I think I know why you want to get rid of that phrase. You dislike the word because you have no mates. Share this post Link to post
