VampireA05 0 Posted April 2, 2006 hedonist......... jk i'll check with my dictionary later... Share this post Link to post
Inferno 22 Posted April 2, 2006 hedonist......... jk Isn't that a life enjoyer/optimist or something? Share this post Link to post
BWare 0 Posted April 2, 2006 Isn't that a life enjoyer/optimist or something? No no no... it's a person whose religion is essentially the pursuit of anything that brings pleasure to himself. Feeling good is their ultimate goal... pretty pathetic if you ask me. For an example, the Greeks were a very hedonistic culture, as were the Romans in their later years. Share this post Link to post
Mr_Lee_ 0 Posted April 2, 2006 Feeling good is their ultimate goal... pretty pathetic if you ask me. I could prove you wrong though the psychological theory 'Behaviourism', but we've had too many long fruitless discussions on here of late. I'll just say that anything you do is for a reward and leave it at that. Epicurus was the Greek philosopher who believed pleasure was the highest form of living. A very valid state of mind to have in my opinion. Share this post Link to post
BWare 0 Posted April 2, 2006 Lee, I know plenty about behaviorism. How could you possibly "prove me wrong" through it? Hedonism is, in fact, the pursuit of pleasure. More specifically, here's what the dictionary has to say about it: Pursuit of or devotion to pleasure, especially to the pleasures of the senses. There we have it. This extreme selfishness is something I consider pathetic. There are FAR greater things in life than your own personal pleasure. The behaviorism model you cited denies our freaking humanity dude. Only animals are that much slaves to their impulses. It's no excuse for human hedonism. Share this post Link to post
Mr_Lee_ 0 Posted April 2, 2006 Since you know behaviourism, you'll know every behaviour is done in the pursuit of a reward - something which gives us pleasure - this is the essence of higher thinking, so hedonism is the state of mind we subconsciously occupy. Do you do things because you feel compelled to or because of the possibility of satisfaction? Share this post Link to post
BWare 0 Posted April 2, 2006 Mr_Lee_, you don't need to talk down to me. As I said earlier, as a bio major I am very familiar with the model. The difference between what motivates us and hedonism is that hedonism is a conscious decision to value pleasure over anything else. It's a way of life... and a pathetic one. Also, behaviorism is JUST A MODEL. You're using it as absolute truth, which simply isn't true. Real life is far more complicated than the model would have you believe... though it can be a good guideline. Basically, you shouldn't base an argument entirely on it. Share this post Link to post
Mr_Lee_ 0 Posted April 2, 2006 You're right, of course, I was using the model of behaviourism in relation to Epicurosy - the purest non conscious form of pleasure. Share this post Link to post
BWare 0 Posted April 2, 2006 Gotcha. I see what you're saying, but I'm only talking in terms of the practical.... you know, real world. Sure, there's a degree of "hedonism" to all of us at the subconscious level... after all, reward is one of the strongest driving forces in biological systems. The pleasures associated with sex, eating, mothering in women, etc, all serve to propel us as a species. That said, devoting your life to pursuing these pleasures (ie, hedonism) is sick and wrong, and actually counteracts what those pleasures are designed for. That's all I'm saying  Share this post Link to post
Cygnus X-1 12 Posted April 3, 2006 Basic ElementalInstinct to Survive Stirs the higher passion Thrill to be alive.... Animal instinct is to survive, and we know via instincts the differences between pleasure and pain, we subconsiously know that pain means something bad is happeneing to us, so we strive for the opposite, the good feelings. I guess its a matter of conditioning as well. Share this post Link to post
