C&C Sites Covering Other RTS Games

Recommended Posts

A simple news post at Planet CNC about Empire at War being reviewed in the latest issue of PC Gamer has sparked a long debate in this thread about some C&C sites covering other RTS games such as Empire at War or Battle for Middle Earth 2. Nothing personal against sites who are doing this but personally I don't like this trend. When you visit a C&C site what do you expect to see, lots of C&C news or news about other RTS games like BFME2?

You won't see BFME2 news here at CNCNZ.com, or EAW news either. The argument could be that BFME2 should be covered because its made by EALA (the home of C&C) and EAW should be covered because Petroglyph includes many former Westwood people. So how "off topic" should C&C sites go?

Depends on the site's focus and the followers. If the followers want to see it, provide it to keep them coming back. It's all about the people, not about being "offtopic."

Well its not really a C&C site if it has other news and content not related to C&C in some way.

I see where you're coming from Sonic, and basically agree. However, you have to consider how we have had NO FREAKING C&C NEWS FOR MONTHS AND MONTHS AND MONTHS AND MONTHS.

Whew! Sorry about that. But I'm sure you see where I'm coming from. The community is still around and kicking- that's not the problem- but the franchise itself is letting us down! Moving focus a bit seems like a natural step to take..... although I'm as uncomfortable with it as you are.

Good call. Thats always been something thats annoyed me, even back in the old days. When C&C sites were reporting on Nox and so forth. Rift had the idea following Westwood, but with the demise, its all a bit patchy holding it all together. It wouldnt be such a bad idea that someone should set up a Westwood fansite again, following all of the games that are EA/Petroglyph etc..

...Not that Id visit, Im only C&C Hardcore nowadays =P

I really couldn't care less. I've basically moved on from CNC, and the only reason I visit this site anymore is because I love the community.

Would I personally be offended if CNCNZ started covering BFME news?

No, but the results may not be so good. Then BFME people start looking to CNCNZ for news, and then they get pissed because we are covering CNC news.

The BfME community is building itself, but occasional posts are no problem. Most of these posts are on a personal ground - having played the game or read a review and (dis)agreeing. Since when do fan sites have to be professional?

It's personal notes that make the great sites stand out. Just think of the webmaster wire here on CNCNZ (or webmaster blog as it is called now) and the writing style of Lion's posts at times: personal.

Just because we're the C&C community, we can still look elsewhere - at times. I think Empire-at-war.com is a good idea, because you can't post all Star Wars news on CNCNZ.
