For all you anti-war, anti-Bush nuts...

I checked the official USAP website and guess what, the US Navy is still an active particiapnt in the research. Fancy that.

The site clearly states that the USN's participation in the USAP is now limited to providing operational support like "weather forecasting, air traffic control, base operations and ground electronics maintenance services." Fancy that.

Ah, but I'm still right even if it's additional support. You clearly stated that they withdrew completely in 1998. That is incorrect as they still provide support, which is just as important as the expeditions themselves.

U.S. Navy to Depart U.S. Antarctic Program after 42 Years

NSF press release 98-012, dated February 18, 1998.

A ceremony in Christchurch, New Zealand on February 20, 1998 marks a significant milestone in the U.S. Navy's withdrawal from the U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP) after 42 years.

In 1993, the Navy announced its decision to withdraw, citing new global priorities related to the ending of the Cold War.

The organisation in charge of the USAP describes it as a withdrawal. Heck, the Navy itself describes it as a withdrawal. Yet when I say the same, you say that I have somehow misrepresented the facts :?

Arctic does not equal Antarctic 8)

See, now this is how things should be debated. Fenring, nice call on this one.

As for F15's comment, in 50 or so years, when the Ice Caps have melted, that influx of fcold reshwater will be a stopper for the gulf stream, which is the sole bringer of 90% of Europe's warmer air and weather. With the gulf stream stopped, or temporarily disabled, there will be a mini ice-age in Europe. Beyond that, I really dont think it will have that drastic of an effect on the human race. We will adapt. Aside from abandoning New Orleans, I dont foresee any major drastic change.

I could be missing something, obviously, feel free to fill me in 8)

Shocker, I really just don't have much time to go digging through websites and find that source. I was referencing something from earlier this year that I came across. It was essentially a report from US sub missions that were running into problems with thicker-than-expected ice in certain areas of the globe. They weren't there to STUDY it, but obviously took note of the dramatic ice shifts- shifts that completely accounted for the apparent recessions we've seen in other areas. The info they gathered put a massive hole in the argument that the ice caps are melting... it basically rendered the entire point useless.

Also, everyone must note that we've been accurately measuring the earth's temperature for what, less than 100 years? This length of time is a drop in the bucket of the earth's history- a history that contains more dramatic climate shifts than you could ever believe. Who can seriously draw any concrete conclusions from the slight warming we've seen over this measly amount of time? Those who hold so fiercely to the notion that it's man's fault must be seen as what they truly are- fundamentalists of the blame America/the west/mankind first religion. They're fundies in every sense of the word.

Now let's all go see Gore's new movie for a good laugh

Global warming? A place not far from where I live that is notorious for how cold it gets reached a record -12, the lowest tempature since the ice age they said. It is officially winter here today and we have been experiancing the type of weather you may experiance in mid January. Global warming huh? Spend a couple of days south of the equater and see if you still think the ice caps are melting.

I dont know, winters here in the midwestern US have been pretty mild over the last 8 years or so. Then again, it was only 3 or 4 years ago that Buffalo New York got over 7 feet of snow in one night....

needless to say, weather is about as predictable as a teenage girl on a rampage (dont ask)
