The Stage is Being Set for Vista!

Recommended Posts

Good article about Microsoft's next OS, Windows Vista, from http://www.techtree.com/techtree/jsp/artic...&cat_id=580:

Dotting the countdown to the launch of its Gen-Next operating system, Windows Vista, Microsoft Corp has made a clutch of significant announcements; the launch of the Windows Vista "Get Ready" Web site, the worldwide availability of Windows Vista Capable PCs, the upcoming availability of Windows Vista Premium Ready PCs, and the availability of the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor Beta.

Windows Vista is being touted as the first operating system to truly scale, basis the hardware capabilities of the computer on which it is installed. Vista, according to Microsoft, will deliver innovations in core operating system experiences including security, reliability, PC management, information search and management, etc.

Mike Sievert, corporate vice president - product management and marketing, Windows, Microsoft, said, "Customers have many options and choices to make, when it comes to buying a PC today. A wide range of form factors, price points, and new technologies figure into their decisions. With that in mind, Microsoft and OEMs are making it easier to prepare for the arrival of Windows Vista. Customers now have the information they need, to get a great Windows XP-based PC today that will deliver rich Windows Vista experiences tomorrow."

The Windows Vista "Get Ready" Web site can be accessed at http://www.windowsvista.com/getready, and is designed to provide customers information and tools to prepare for the upcoming Windows Vista.

Further, Windows Vista Capable PCs or Windows XP-based PCs that are powerful enough to run Windows Vista, will now be available from leading PC manufacturers across-the-globe including Acer, Dell, Fujitsu, Gateway, HP, Lenovo, NEC, Sony, Toshiba, etc. Microsoft is also working with several PC manufacturers, to introduce Windows Vista Premium Ready PCs at a later date.

As per Microsoft, Windows Vista Capable PCs will largely comprise current PCs running Windows XP that would serve as the bare minimum for upgrading to Windows Vista. Vista Capable PCs will feature an 800MHz or faster processor, 512MB RAM, DirectX 9 capable video card, and a 20GB hard drive.

The to-be-launched Premium Ready PCs will allow consumers to take full advantage of Windows Vista, including its new advanced user interface named "Aero". Premium Ready PCs will need a 1GHz processor, 40GB hard drive, 1GB RAM, DirectX 9 graphics card having 128MB to 256MB of video RAM, DVD drive, audio output, and Internet access.

Microsoft advises customers to go in for the Premium Ready designation, in the event they are presently planning on purchasing a new PC.

Lastly, the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor Beta announced, will help customers choose that edition of Windows Vista which is most suitable for them, besides helping them determine whether their current PCs are ready for an upgrade.

The Upgrade Advisor Beta too is available at the "Get Ready" Web site.

I've download the Upgrade Advisor tool to see if my system is up to par for the new OS, but I can't see myself upgrading to the next Windows at launch next year.

Uni's and polytechinics and such have special arrangements with microsoft and such, so they can give away their products. Well some. But I'd assume Vista would be included, since they give away XP Pro. :P hehe...

Im on 120 too. Its a stupid size for a home computer really. Unless you dont have DVD writer, and are a movie collector or something, there seems to be no point.

Wow, how do you manage that? Is it all games/movies?

I have BF2, TFD and CSS/HL2 etc installed (which is more games than I play), about 10 DVD rips, about 9gig of music and I still have a spare 50.

I have all these games installed pictured below.....

I also have many apps like OfficeXP, Security tools, DVD/CD burning tools, PSP for image editing, Website coding programs and so on....

And MP3 Collection taking about 2 GB I think....

I have around 75 GB free of my 120 GB drive. Well Windows reports it as a 111 GB drive actually, but who's counting.

In short I don't fill my drive with crap I don't need.
