Inferno 22 Posted June 20, 2006 The World Cup of football. I saw talking 'bout it in another topic, but who's gonna win? Me thinks Argentina. Share this post Link to post
Luk3us 63 Posted June 20, 2006 I care not. I'm only interested in how far the Aussies get. Sad isn't it? Me following an Australian team.... :? Share this post Link to post
Inferno 22 Posted June 20, 2006 Mind you they're only playing that good because they have a good dutch coach. Why else did Korea get to the quarter finals last year? Share this post Link to post
Alphabear 11 Posted June 20, 2006 Mind you they're only playing that good because they have a good dutch coach. Why else did Korea get to the quarter finals last year? lol id have to agree somewhat there. Its true to an extent. Then again we have never had a decent coach before. Pitty "Aussie Guus" aka Guus Hiddink is leaving after the world cup. Share this post Link to post

But the dutch team will kick their asses. Share this post Link to post

Sonic 296 Posted June 23, 2006 I don't really care about the World Cup but I've seen the results on TV. So Aussie get through to the next round on a draw. There have been other draws as well. Doesn't that just seem wrong, I mean you get success from not winning the game. Did the Miami Heat win the NBA Championship the other day for tieing with Dallas in the NBA Finals? No they won the game. Share this post Link to post
Luk3us 63 Posted June 23, 2006 True, but they're not into the finals.... Not likely that would happen but stranger things have happened... Share this post Link to post
BWare 0 Posted June 23, 2006 Can someone PLEASE tell me the difference between the exciting no scoring games and the boring ones? Someone please? Seriously... I just don't get soccer. Share this post Link to post
Alphabear 11 Posted June 23, 2006 the reason we were able to get through on a draw is because it was the last match of the group stage and all we needed was a draw to have enough points to go on. So the top teams on the group leaderboard make it through to the knockout section of the finals. I was hoping we would get to play the US as Italy has come from the group the US team was in. For those who dont know the US coach is to put it nicely, not very popular among Australian supporters. Prior to the world cup he called the Australian team the Easy-beats of the competition  Share this post Link to post
rEdaSbLood 1 Posted June 23, 2006 soccer is both entertaining and playable Share this post Link to post
Saracen 16 Posted June 23, 2006 Can someone PLEASE tell me the difference between the exciting no scoring games and the boring ones? Someone please? Seriously... I just don't get soccer. It all comes down to the skill and visual display of the players, as well as the coach on the bench dealing out the strategical elements of play such as the formations and tactics such as a long ball or a tightly knit passing game. England are a perfect example of what a good or boring no score draw game can be. An exciting game is one that has plenty of chances. plenty of shots towards the goal and the tactics used to create those chances. Near misses or great saves are just as entertaining as great goals. The game has to be fast paced for most of the match. You feel the tension and determination of the players and that transmits to you. If both sides play really well and they come away not scoring it's the entertainment they've provided in trying to break each other down. Boring games are the opposite. Play will be sloppy, seemingly unprofessional and everyone will chase the ball rather than space out and build up tactical elements of play. Chances will be few and far between and the ball will spend most of it's time in the middle of the field. Scoring chances will usually go very wide of the goal or easily into the goalkeepers hands. The pace is slow, and players will become frustrated and bored of the game, it reflects in the crowd as well. Share this post Link to post
BWare 0 Posted June 23, 2006 I see... but it still just really doesn't connect with me. I think I'm biased toward more physical contact sports, like football. I played that for years, and so a sport where a field full of guys kinda dance around each other, kicking a ball, overreacting while fouled, and scoring very, very little, just seems really obnoxious. But I guess it's all in perspective. I can see how it would be fun, especially if the US had real rivalries with other countries in the World Cup, and everyone here actually got into it  Share this post Link to post
Alphabear 11 Posted June 24, 2006 yeah for all the Australian Socceroos fans like me its great because we now have a team that is competative and the rest of the country is becoming involved now. Funny how all these people who have never followed it before now think they have an expert opinion  Share this post Link to post
