Sonic 295 Posted August 1, 2006 Been out of loop with keeping up with my Metallica new lately. Earlier this month Metallica played a new song live at a show in Germany (I think). Someone has put it up on YouTube. Its nothing like St Anger, in fact it almost a return to the old days!!! Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted August 1, 2006 Sounds a lot like the Black Album and AJFA... very swish. Share this post Link to post
Sonic 295 Posted August 2, 2006 Yeah it does have the AJFA sound to it. For the record this new song was performed live in Arnhem, Netherlands on the 8th of June 2006. I thought it was in Germany. This video makes me laugh at the start with Rob having the wrong bass and all.... Share this post Link to post
Tree 0 Posted August 3, 2006 That song was great until James opened his mouth. I watch them , and the opening line sounds like Hulk Hogan singing karaoke :? Share this post Link to post
Sonic 295 Posted August 4, 2006 James sounded ok to me. Maybe your listening with your anti-Metallica ears  I will admit that James' voices has changed over the past few years. And James has admitted it in the past that he sings like a drunken sailor most of the time. And don't forget that when Metallica go on tour the play lots of shows on back to back nights so wear and tear will kick in. Your anti-Metallica comments offends me  Share this post Link to post
Tree 0 Posted August 4, 2006 That song actually has one of the best guitar solos since Am I Evil. But this song was a great change from St. Anger's style. Not a single guitar solo in that entire album. Metallica, along with GnR made the guitar solo cool again. And they just aren't doing it now. If the rest of Metallica's new songs are like this, and James sounds decent, I'll consider actually buying the new album instead of getting it online. I understand they went through a lot of crap to record St. Anger, and it shows. Maybe one or two good songs on that whole album :? James strains through that entire song. He's trying to sing that signature 'growl', and it came naturally to him in the 80's. Now it seems like he's struggling to get it. Can't wait for the studio-recorded version of that song when James is sobered up and sounds decent. Share this post Link to post
Sonic 295 Posted August 4, 2006 Sobered up, dude are you serious  James doesn't drink anymore. He went into rehab, sorted out his problems and he's a better person because of it. I can't understand why every so anti-Metallica, always negative towards them or they make jokes about them. And please don't put Guns N Rose and Metallica in the same category An mp3 version of this new Metallica song is available from http://rapidshare.de/files/22441189/Metall...in_6.6.mp3.html Share this post Link to post
cliff15 0 Posted August 4, 2006 And please don't put Guns N Rose and Metallica in the same category Guns N' Roses are SO much better than Metallica. Metallica are good, yeah, but GnR just beat 'em hands down. Listen to some of the new GnR songs (Better, IRS) and compare them to Metallica's new song. They cane it. Oh, I was just making an excuse for him . Good for him though. I can't understand why every so anti-Metallica, always negative towards them or they make jokes about them. And please don't put Guns N Rose and Metallica in the same category I'm not "anti-Metallica", if they're song is good, I'll say so. This new song, it sounds like they're trying to go back to how they were in the 80's. That would be great, if James was 20 years younger. The beginning of the song was great. The instrumentals are amazing, and probably some of the best since Am I Evil. James just doesn't have his flair anymore. Rob and Kirk are still amazing. Even Lars looks beat now. Check out this shot of him: Guns N' Roses are SO much better than Metallica. Metallica are good, yeah, but GnR just beat 'em hands down. Listen to some of the new GnR songs (Better, IRS) and compare them to Metallica's new song. They cane it. That's a lie, IMO. But you really can't group them together. I did so to illustrate that they both popularized the guitar solo. Each did so beautifully. Share this post Link to post
UncleBob 0 Posted August 4, 2006 Thank God it doesn't sound like St Anger all over again Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted August 4, 2006 Don't knock St. Anger. That album kicked some major ass. Share this post Link to post
Tree 0 Posted August 4, 2006 That song, as well as SKOM, kicked major ass. The whole album, eh, not so much. Share this post Link to post
Cygnus X-1 12 Posted August 5, 2006 That's a lie, IMO. But you really can't group them together. I did so to illustrate that they both popularized the guitar solo. Each did so beautifully. Hendrix, Van Halen, Lifeson, Satriani and many others were soloing waayy before Metallica or GnR ever started. In no way did they "popularize" guitar solos. However not to slam their music at all, but guitars were being soloed and shredded on a long time before either of those two groups were founded. Share this post Link to post
UncleBob 0 Posted August 5, 2006 Don't knock St. Anger. That album kicked some major ass. Yes of course some of the songs were OK, but compared to the classics... it doesn't compare. Share this post Link to post

Yeah, but out of those Hendrix and Satriani were the only decent ones. Probably should have attributed them too. But good point. Share this post Link to post
Cygnus X-1 12 Posted August 6, 2006 True. Lifeson was the only GREAT one... want proof? The Necromancer, Anthem, Working Man, La Villa Strangiato, The Trees. Just to name a few earlyish songs that he wrote. Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted August 6, 2006 But, of those, WM and LVS are the only really, really great songs. >_> Share this post Link to post
Cygnus X-1 12 Posted August 6, 2006 Are you kidding me?! When's the last time you listened to his playing on The Necromancer? Plus I only mentioned his early stuff, cause it was done before Metallica and GnR came about. Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted August 6, 2006 Should have said this earlier but you have to realize something, Cygnus. Tree said that Metallica and GnR popularized the guitar solo and I agree with that. While it was there already, it wasn't all that widely used. When Metallica and GnR hit the scene, you saw many more bands using solos. However, honestly, the true proprieters of heavy metal solos are undoubtedly Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath. Share this post Link to post
Cygnus X-1 12 Posted August 7, 2006 For the metal Scene maybe....but as far as rock goes, solos were used quite a lot. Although I'm not entirely sure about "popularity" of the solo, but I do know that when Hendrix, Lifeson (or whoever) started off ripping up the scales, people loved it. Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted August 7, 2006 That might be true but that doesn't mean it was a widely used piece in many bands. It wasn't until the 1980s that guitar solos became widely used. At least, that's what I've noticed. Share this post Link to post
Cygnus X-1 12 Posted August 7, 2006 You could very well be right there. Too bad Im just used to listening to good music  Share this post Link to post

At least, that's what I've noticed. I dunno dude... virtuoso performances, known as cadenzas ("solos" designed to accent an aria and show off a player's talent), have been used since the concertos of the 18th century. The modern guitar solo does seem to have taken off in the '80s, but the concept is not new  Share this post Link to post
Tree 0 Posted August 7, 2006 No the concept is not new, and that's not at all what I'm saying. Share this post Link to post
Cygnus X-1 12 Posted August 8, 2006 I still wouldnt used the term "popularized" because in many rock circles, (LZ, Rush, King Crimson, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page) solos were very popular. I guess overall though.... then again, look at the late 90's and the now. The solo seems to have disapeared and been repaced with powerchord rapids and an entire lack of skill. Aside from the older groups that are still kicking. Dream Theater, Metallica, Rush...the list goes on. Share this post Link to post
