Has anime EVER been cool? I'm not trying to be trendy at all. I saw Neon Genesis Evangelion, and it basically changed my life. I still am no fan of anime in general.... but that was the single most incredible piece of media I've ever seen. And that's really saying something.

Hahaha, yes I knew that my comment would turn a few heads (yours in particular), but it is all true. For the record, I can't stand Japanimation. I think it's largely garbage with lotsa 'splosions and little or no substance or attention span. However, that one series stands head and shoulders above its peers for a number of reasons. First of all, the animation is truly incredible and beautifully done. This is admirable, but not necessarily unique. What blew me away is the direction the series quickly takes, when basically every main character descends into insanity, and their motivations, fears, and other incredibly compelling elements of their psyche are deeply explored. You find yourself sympathizing (if not empathizing) with the characters, and feel what they're feeling through the whole ordeal. This all climaxes with what is essentially the apocalypse, which is done in a unique and brilliant way. The sheer depth of emotion portrayed in this genre that tends to be such a vapid wasteland floored me, and the fact that its brilliant plot is so heavily laden with Judeo-Christian concepts and symbology only adds to its depth.

 

So yeah, it gets 2 thumbs way up from me. If you take the time to watch it, you will be affected by it, mark my words.

NGE = overrated. Seen it before. Not as great as everyone claims... definitely not the be-all, end-all anime series.

The **** have you been watching? You must be stuck in the mid-90s. There's many, many more goofy, off-the-wall animes out there. Watch those instead... they're far more entertaining than animated action movies. Not to say there isn't any good action titles because there are... Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist... some of the best ones I've seen.

Maybe not, but I'm guessing (and would bet just about anything that I'm right) that you don't like it JUST because it's popular, and that you wrote it off pretty much from the beginning without giving it much of a chance. Also, you kinda tend to be contrary no matter WHAT we're talking about. If I bashed it, I'm sure you'd be defending it right now. :wink:

 

All I can say is that as a completely objective viewer, I was blown away by it. Call it what you will, but it is a very impressive piece of work. It also takes more than a brief glance to understand even tiniest details of the story.

There's many, many more goofy, off-the-wall animes out there. Watch those instead... they're far more entertaining than animated action movies. Not to say there isn't any good action titles because there are... Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist... some of the best ones I've seen.

Oh, I really don't think I'd like "goofy, off-the-wall" anime stuff. What I loved about NGE was its depth and the power of its story. The goofy stuff I couldn't stand. Japanese "humor" really tends to put me off.

I watched every episode and the addendum, End of Evangelion. It didn't strike me as the awe-inspiring piece of work. I've considered buying it though because it's still a quality title, despite being hugely overrated.

Yeah... the mid-90s produced a lot of mediocre action titles that lack a lot of substance. More recent ones, like the few I mentioned and stuff like Bleach, are REALLY bringing action back... not that I think it really died in the first place.... anyway...

You'd like Abenobashi, another Gainax title. It parodies everything and does so quite masterfully. You may not get EVERY joke but it will still make you die of laughter. And if you like that one, watch Excel Saga. It's ****ing crazy but oh so hilarious.

 

I'd recommend more titles but you'd probably not like them. I do watch quite a few girly animes as well. >_>

I think it was largely due to the fact that I could somehow relate to some of the psychological struggles of the characters, especially Asuka and her horribly effed up past. Man some of that was jarring. :shock:

Haha, yeah I think I'm learning that my anti-anime stance was pretty misguided... though I do still maintain that MOST of it is a waste of time. A friend just lent me Akira, and I was pretty impressed with that as well. I'll have to do a little more digging.

Remember, I said it was overrated and not THE awe-inpsiring piece of work people say it is. Doesn't mean I didn't like or didn't get caught up in the emotions. Speaking of which, I really need to watch NGE again. Been a REALLY long time since last I watched... might be different this time around...

Yes, VERY misguided. XD However, it's only a waste of time if you don't watch titles that you'd enjoy. Akira... hoo boy. That one left me speechless. Two reasons: it kicks ass... and it left me going what in the **** just happened at the end. That's another one I need to watch again.

Really? Akira left you speechless, but the end of the End of Evangelion (man is that confusing!) didn't? I was pretty well confused by both, but the deep character development of Eoe really made me care enough to try and figure it out.

The country really seems to be nearly a total moral vacuum.

 

In spite of that, I was blown away by NGE. It's a pretty incredible piece of work, no doubt about it. But no, I don't now, and likely never will, "adore" anime.

 

The medium doesn't necessarily negate the quality of the message. NGE is just proof of that. If you have the time, and can deal with the Japanese weirdness (and that "fanservice" nonsense, whatever the hell that is), then I highly recommend it. It's quite a ride.
