After endless speculation as to what the 'mystery product' that Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has been referring to for months actually is, Nintendo have finally confirmed that a new portable game system called Nintendo DS will be launched this year - and, incredibly, it'll have two (count 'em!) screens.

 

There are no images yet of the DS (currently still a working title), which is due to be unveiled for the first time at the E3 games show in May, although we do know that the screens will sit one above the other, as opposed to side-by-side, and that it's only designed for use by a single player.

 

Nintendo promise that the DS - which isn't compatible with either GBA or Gamecube games - will allow players "to manage their game progress from two different perspectives, enhancing both the speed and strategy of the challenge. For example in a football game, you can view the whole game on one screen, while simultaneously focusing on an individual footballer's tackle or goal on the other screen."

 

"This new game hardware is unlike any others. It is totally new," adds Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa. "We hope our console will become a breakthrough in the sluggish global game market." The DS features two separate three inch LCD displays, separate processors and semiconductor memory of up to one Gigabit.

I'm unclear about one thing. Is this a "console" or a cheap computer?

nintendo say it cannot be compaired to a console or a computer so its in a field of its own

Well sounds like it's going to go though batteries like a particle cannon through butter (note C&C reference) and be damn near impossible to actually use - I wonder how long Nintendo will take before they cancel it because it's impossible to watch 2 screens at the same time.

It could be kind of handy - for a PC. Think C&C: you have the battlefield on one screen, and the radar and construction toolbar on the other. Of course, you'll need two mice to control all this

If you could I'd say it wouldn't come cheap.

It's be difficult to play a game with, and hard on the eyes as you'd have to sit so close! They Eye Toy for PS2 is almost like touch-screen.
