Shocker 0 Posted March 11, 2004 Nvidia's competitor to the Radeon 9800 XT is the GeforceFX 5950 Ultra. It's basically a toss-up between them, with the lead going to the Nvidia card in some cases, and the lead going to the ATi card in others. Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted March 11, 2004 Yeah, ok. Do you know which card is best for C & C? Radeon or Nvidia Share this post Link to post
Sonic 296 Posted March 12, 2004 As in Generals and Zero Hour? If you want the marketing hype on which card is best for Generals and Zero Hour flip over your Zero Hour box, notice that little Nvidia logo down near the bottom? There is your answer, the game is optimised for Nvidia cards. Personally I think that's a load rubbish, Generals and Zero Hour run fine on either Nvidia based to ATI based cards. Thierry 0 Posted March 12, 2004 Soooo, simply put put it doesn't make a real difference. As long as Radeon doesn't give my any errors I'll go with that. I also wonder if there are any 512MB video cards out there... Share this post Link to post
Sonic 296 Posted March 12, 2004 I also wonder if there are any 512MB video cards out there... I've never seen or heard of any. 256MB is as far as they go.....for now. Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted March 12, 2004 Yeah,... for now. Lets hope we'll all get to use 1GB cards one day huh 8) Nowadays PC keep on getting better and better. All we have to do is wait Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted March 15, 2004 Okay another qeustion? Which is better? Sapphire Radeon 9600 XT ATLANTIS 256MB Or Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB Share this post Link to post
Rogue Leader 0 Posted March 15, 2004 Here I am The Radeon 9800 Pro is the better choice. The 9800 is still the flagship model, and outperforms the 9600 XT. As for RAM on Video Cards, it really isn't necessary to go past 64MB. The RAM is used to store the displayed frame while the GPU builds it. Once the whole frame is built, it is then outputted to the screen. The memory needed is just size needed to hold the image at whatever resolution you are building - usually no more 1600x1200. The extra RAM is used for other things these days, but system RAM is just as good for handling that and there little to no difference in cards with more RAM. Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted March 15, 2004 Fair enough , and thnkx. I'm still kinda looking. Unfortunately , I can't go for the Radeon 9800 XT right now. Its just to expensive, also now that I'm going for a P4 2,8 GHZ, 1MB cache proccesor and a DVD rewriter. ( I didn't think I needed it before) So I'm just kinda looking in the area of 9800 pro and similar stuff. Any other suggestions? Share this post Link to post
Sonic 296 Posted March 16, 2004 As for RAM on Video Cards, it really isn't necessary to go past 64MB. So the 128MB I have on my card is a waste? Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted March 16, 2004 I don't think so. It simply improves it all together, I think :? Share this post Link to post
Rogue Leader 0 Posted March 17, 2004 So the 128MB I have on my card is a waste? It is more or less unnecessary. The really important things when it comes to video cards is the speed and architecture of the GPU, and the speed with which it communicates with the memory it has. Share this post Link to post
Shocker 0 Posted March 17, 2004 Sorry RL, I have to disagree with you there. 128mb of RAM on a video card these days is definitely not unnecessary, and 64mb is certainly inadequate for a lot of modern/upcoming games if you wish to play them with AA/high texture details. Take an example - Sonic's favourite Call of Duty Call of Duty has the following video card memory requirements: - Video cards with 32MB to 64MB of video RAM are able to use the Normal Character & General Textures settings.- Video cards with 128MB of video RAM are able to use the High Character & General Textures settings. - Video cards with 256MB of video RAM are able to use the Extra Character & General Textures settings. This is one example of a modern game that loves lots of video card memory - there are others like UT2k4, Max Payne 2 and the upcoming Far Cry to name but a few... Share this post Link to post
Sonic 296 Posted March 17, 2004 Far Cry......that's one game I'm getting soon. That and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. Staying on topic here, when I purchased my video card I choose the 128MB version because I was under the impression that more is better, plus the price difference between the 128MB and 64MB version was marginal. Thierry 0 Posted March 17, 2004 Yeah, but 128 MB is also more widely used. It kinda depends on how you are going to use that Video Card. If your talking about using it for stuff like UT 2004, well then it good be a good thing. Share this post Link to post
Rogue Leader 0 Posted March 19, 2004 Sorry RL, I have to disagree with you there. 128mb of RAM on a video card these days is definitely not unnecessary, and 64mb is certainly inadequate for a lot of modern/upcoming games if you wish to play them with AA/high texture details... I agree that today's games are using video RAM better and better, but I still don't think that our cards are powerful enough to allow for a solid framerate with AA at high-resolution. I know that we will be seeing it very soon, but the cards today that have all that RAM just aren't powerful enough to use them the way they should. Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted March 19, 2004 Well, whatever :? I finally ordered my computer and I'll have it in a week cost: 1500,- Euro Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted March 28, 2004 Well, here's the post then Sonic... Well, one qeustion, I finally got my new pc (I'm writing this very post with it, JIPPEE ) And I'm not sure if I got the latest drivers for my Sapphire 9800 Pro. I've looked around at Ati.com but couldn't really find it (maybe its just me) Do you know where I can get the latest stuff And whats with those 'catalysts' I'm not really an expert here, as you see Any idea? Share this post Link to post
Rogue Leader 0 Posted March 28, 2004 Here's the link to the latest set of Catalyst drivers for the Radeon family running in Windows XP: http://www2.ati.com/drivers/wxp-w2k-cataly...24m-013831c.exe If you have another OS, go to this page and select you Operating System from the list: http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted March 29, 2004 Thankx I also play Emperor and the movies for the storyline aren't working right. They have a lot of disruptions and the game itself does work fine. Any idea's to why this is? Share this post Link to post
Sonic 296 Posted March 29, 2004 Get the last patch for Emperor that Westwood released. Best site for Emperor files is http://www.dune2k.com/ Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted March 29, 2004 Thknx, but still the movies/intros fluter a lot. Maybe Emperor can't fully work with 9800 Pro? (P.S I work on XP with latest pack) And my audio is Creative P580 Share this post Link to post
Rogue Leader 0 Posted March 31, 2004 That's a problem my computer also had, it has something to do with Direct Memory Addressing (DMA) on your Hard Drive. Right click on the shortcut for Emperor, and select properties. Under the Shortcut tab, in the target field, add " +w" without the quotes to the field. It should read something like this: "C:WestwoodEmperoremperor.exe +w" Since I don't have Emperor anymore, I can't remember the install directory or the EXE name, but adding the +w switch forces the game to load the movies into RAM before playing them. It takes a little longer, but you don't get the skipping. Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted March 31, 2004 Darn, It still won't work. I did it, added +w to the shortcut of the emperor.exe file, but there is no diffenerence And I just don't get it? I'm running on Windows XP Pro, and I've already tried the compatibility stuff. Also nothing... Share this post Link to post
