C&C3: Kane's Wrath No Logo Mod

Recommended Posts

I have made a small mod for C&C3: Kane's Wrath that removes the EA splash logo when the game loads. As many people have discovered you can't hit the ESC key to skip past this logo. You can download this mod right now from this page at the TibEd site. The original version of the mod, to remove the splash logo from C&C3, is also available.

I think it's really lame that you can't press ESC.

Fine, there's no problem having it there, but you don't need to be reminded that EA made the game every time you start it, it's especially irritating if you play the game often and you just hate EA every time you can't skip their damn logo.

You hate EA but you buy their games?

It really doesn't bother me that you can't hit ESC on the EA logo. I think of it like those silly semi-transparent logos TV channels use. Do they really need them sitting there in the corner of the screen constantly reminding you what channel your watching? Can't make a mod to get the rid of those so I don't care about them. While Koen's no logo mod is quick time saver I know I would never use it.

To be fair, I wouldn't really say that I hate EA, but I get frustrated that they do this, and the only purpose it serves is making people who play the game frustrated at EA.

One of the things that EA bragged about was the time it took to start Tiberium Wars, before it came out, then they add the logo which automatically add 10 seconds.

They could at least make the logo display during the loading when you start the game, now all it really does is delaying you.

My conclusion: There is no point for EA to not make the player able to skip the logo, it only enhances peoples' belief that EA are inherently evil.

In almost all games you can't skip the publishers logo... and when you can, it's normally held up by some loading screen that you can't skip anyway.

And please give over with the EA evil thing.... most of us here have done.

At least this still isn't the era of computers when games came on cassette tapes for our Commodore 64's or Spectrums. 10 minutes was the average normal loading time, and anything around 5 minutes was supremely fast... Consider yourself lucky that 10 seconds is all you get these days.

The logo is an ownership legality which has to be displayed by the proprietor.... such complaints as recover's, do not drive the market. In fact (with this scenario) they have nothing to do with the market. Unless the logo is excessively used by filling the screen for a long period of time (Usually over 10 seconds for a still and over 30 seconds for motion), or considered a hindrance to the end user product, only then is the case for complaint legitimate.

The use of Themed EA logos is now standard practice, and all legal and above board. In this instance because EA are both the developer and publisher, they can use what amount of time they wish (within limits) before, after or during loading... But the EA logo has to be legally displayed as part of the proprietary software. Technically, removal of the EA logo is illegal under the terms of the end user license. Since there is legal obligation to have the logo displayed, the user is removing a key copyright trademark... as herein EA's EULA:

EA owns all of the rights, title and interest in the Tools and Materials. You may not alter any of the EA's trademarks or copyright notices included in or with the Tools & Materials or EA's products.

Therefore anyone who uses this "modification" is under legal obligation to terminate the agreement, and destroy the software and any backup copy that may have been made. Failing to do so thereby renders EA to take legal action against the user for failing to comply.

what i meant was that, usually, the consumers' preference is first priority. this includes opinion. but, obviously Saracen is right about this particular incident; it isn't about convenience here.

People are quick to forget (or they simply don't know). When you purchase software like games you don't own it, your only purchasing the right to install and use the software.

So in the end Koen's no logo mod is a violation of EA's EULA, but its not as if EA are going to come and hunt you down for using it.

Hmm, I never really considered reading the EULA. It could be a violation. The EULA mentions modifying the trademark, nothing about removing it.

Let me say that all will be well, because this EULA violation (if any) is rather small: the executable code of the game is not modified at all, just one of the INI files of the game. Compared to other EULA violations such as online cheats, illegal cracks, this mod pales in comparisons. It's a sweet little thing, it should fly under the radar like a stealth plane. ;)

Saracen's point is interesting (and correct) but recover's opinion is still true. It is frustrating that on repeat, you are forced to watch something you don't want.

I learned a habit from a friend to let the game run/load properly in is first run (including all notices)... but after that - it would be nice to have the option to turn off or skip or shorten these sort of things.

But to be honest - the logo hasn't even bothered me yet. I didn't even know I couldn't skip it until reading this thread.
