Red Alert 3 First Impression Article at GameSpot

Recommended Posts

GameSpot have posted first impression article focusing on Red Alert 3. Its rather informative and contains some new details. There are 18 new screen shots as well. Here is a sample.

We were able to watch a brief demonstration that showed the kind of back-and-forth gameplay you'll see in a typical match. It began with Soviet forces using a standard MCV (mobile construction vehicle) attempting to build up a small, landlocked base. The Soviets will apparently be able to develop new bases very quickly, but their unfinished structures will be especially vulnerable to damage while they're still being built. We watched the Soviets build a refinery to harvest a nearby resource node, as well as a handful of energy generators, and then move on to an infantry barracks. The barracks were used to commission the infamous C&C engineer unit, which has the ability to seize buildings. In Red Alert 3, the engineer unit is also equipped with an amphibious raft. The engineer hopped into the nearby water to take control of a lighthouse on a small island, and control of this structure opened up a massive line of sight that revealed a huge enemy installation. The Soviet faction then built a handful of sickles, which are mechanical walker units with antipersonnel armaments, though these units were quickly plastered by allied air units that bombed out the base.

Undaunted, the Soviets rebuilt their base, this time churning out bullfrog walkers with antiair flak cannons that shredded the returning Allied flyers. What followed was a constant back-and-forth struggle as land, air, and sea units from all three factions took each other on in a grand game of rock-paper-scissors--a balance philosophy that will clearly be at the heart of the game's unit design. We watched as antiair vehicles took down flyers, while getting trashed by antivehicle units, only to be bombed back into the stone age by naval destroyer ships. The remaining units on each side got mopped up by huge King Oni mechs from the new Empire faction, which we saw very little of otherwise.

So: Do I get this right and Albert Einstein really got killed by the Soviets? Somehow I think that a Red Alert without Albert Einstein doesn't fit. After all he invented most of the Allied technology a.s.o.

Also btw.: The sentence about time travel sounded a bit strange. I mean what is so new regarding this in the Red Alert series after all that is what happened in the first Red Alert game (Einstein went back in time) - though this might be the first time for the Soviet union but that sentence sounded like it is generally new...

Now i understand why they is no prism technology on ra3, because Einstein gets killed by the Soviets some time in RA2.

The Allieds technology will be different.

I also noticed that one of the Allieds superweapon will be a Particle Cannon (Not Weather Storm{because Einstein is killed}), Anyway "Particle Cannon"...could EA be linking the Generals universe with C&C?

Oh no here we go again  No they aren't linking the universes. Particle Cannon is just a logical name.

The universes are all separate now. Especially the Generals universe.

I wonder: Why haven't the Allies gone back in time then too to rescue Albert Einstein? After all that should be in their capabilities as Albert Einstein got killed way after his time travel...

Telling a story about time travel is very hard. Because u have to think of "what would happen if he wasn't here?, what are the changes?, how does this affect the whole world?". There are many affects to think about, so the RA plot is very complicated.

In all technicality the space time continuum has an infinite amount of dimensions. In my opinion, playing the consistent time travel plot, might not smell of originality, but it can (and should) offer some great depth to the plot of RA3. If EA do this correctly, we really could have some mind bending thoughts and questions to ask. All in which should spur some really heavily debated topics in the future, and has the potential to really strengthen the community on all levels.

I would like to see that though. I can't honestly say there's been a story plot (in any game) which has sparked as much intelligent debate since TS & Firestorm. Any game which has the opportunity to tax the mind in many different ways is a winner in my book. Many games have got so dumbed down in recent history, and that annoys me greatly. So come on EA, let's cut the crap dumbed down stuff and have a game that's willing to tax the more intelligent minds, and not go down to the level of some inbred Redneck from a Louisiana swamp.

lets start that talk about RA fiction right now

one question i have is when exactly did they travel back to? most likely between the beginning of the first war and end of the second. if they killed einstein before he invented the time machine or even killed Hitler, then it would undo the entire RA universe no?
