Ford Fiestas are good little cars. You probably would love this 2009 Fiesta. It looks good inside and out. Great interior trim, interesting range of colour options, and it does drive really smoothly. I took the 1.6 Diesel out on a test drive a few weeks ago and was surprisingly bowled over with how much an improvement it is over previous models. If I had the money, I probably would get myself one.

Final word. The Toyota Prius is crap! :P

I don't have much choice, actually. Since I live in the U.S. I'll only be able to get the 1.6L Ti-VCT with the dual-shift automatic; not that I mind the transmission but I'd love to get my hands on the diesel if they ever brought it here. Which they won't. One of Ford's worst decisions regardless of their position.

I've known the Prius, actually pretty much every hybrid, is crap for a long time now. Every time I see one come toward me I put on my worst scowling face imaginable. Not because it's a bad car but because hybrids only make the situation worse. I won't care to elaborate if you already know why. ;)

UGLY ASS CAR! argh.

You'd prefer looking at the old one? There's nothing wrong with how the Focus or the Fiesta look. Seriously.

To be frank though, at least cars outside the USA don't look like boxes. There seems to be no design innovation or care for aerodynamics state-side. Plus with your behemoth engines chucking out extremely low MPG, I'm surprised there is very little passion or pride from your car industry. There's only 4 decent modern cars (post 50's) to ever come out of the states, and they are the Dodge Charger (Purely classic), Dodge Viper (with emphasis on the most recent model), Chevrolet Corvette (older models), and the Ford GT... The rest unfortunately, appear to have no real edge compared to the rest of the world.

Trust me, I've been to the states many times, and I wouldn't even attempt to sit in half the native scrap metal you guys drive over there. For the so-called richest nation on earth, your car industry has a lot to answer for.

Update on my truck: trashed... passenger side window is gone, door is crushed in, not too bad but it won't open, and the bed is absolutely crushed in on the passenger side... trees are not very nice XD

Chevrolet is actually decent as far as the small cars go. If the Fiesta weren't an option I'd immediately drive off in a Cobalt coupe. It's great basic motoring and it's GIGANTIC inside. Given I'm 6'2" with a lot of my height in my legs, it helps. And no, I'm not considering the Honda Fit (known as the Jazz to you Brits) until I sit inside the very newest model, because the previous 2 generations, despite what everyone said, was VERY cramped with forward legroom, even with the seats all the way back. The Yaris is a bit too awkward for me, the Smart ForTwo is nowhere near suitable for our winter roads, and everything else is either built like crap or too expensive.

As I detest sports cars for their pointlessness in practical use, I'm going to list off what I think are the best modern American-sold cars (not American-made since we still outsource pretty much all of our automotive labor):

  • Chrysler 300
  • Ford Focus
  • Ford Fiesta (not on sale just yet, actually, but will be by summer)
  • Honda Civic
  • Mazda 3
  • Mazda 6
  • Volkswagen Jetta TDI
  • Volkswagen Passat
  • Chevrolet Cobalt
  • Saturn Sky
  • Saturn Aura XR
  • Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix
  • Subaru Forester PZEV
  • Subaru Impreza (any model)
  • Subaru Outback
  • Acura RDX
  • Nissan Rogue
  • Honda Ridgeline
  • Honda Element
  • Scion xB
  • Nissan Cube (refrain from barfing please but it is brilliant as just a plain city transit vehicle; not on sale quite yet, either, but it will be sometime late fall iirc)

DD will tear me a new one over a few of these but I really like them.

So-called is the operative word. But hey, whatever keeps people in a job. Ford is an American company in case you'd forgotten, so we're sort-of responsible for the Fiesta in the first place. This is just the one time we get a car from Europe that hasn't been tampered with in any way except for modifying the bonnet to meet safety standards and changing the driving position for our roads.

oh lordie. all of those little cramped cars that guys buy for their wives because it looks small and cute and has easy-to-reach gadgets which they think are within the mental capacities of their spouses...

only they don't seem to realise that women want a car that is 1) cheap 2) ROOMY for shopping xD 3) safe 4) looks pretty and has gadgets they understand such as radios, seatbelts, heaters, electric windows and kiddy locks x3;

either that or those style cars are picked up by all the boy racers cos they are the smallest cheapest things they can get. then they stick vinyl stickers on the windows, LED's everywhere, put in bigass speakers and tacky racing car seat add-ons then drive around with their friends gone 10pm whilst booming some horrible music trying to pick up girls >->;

nono, if you wanna get a car that will attract the ladies (and you can't quite afford a supercar) go with a standard business class car o.o y'know, that BMW look... sure, they're (much?) more expensive then some of the other cars spoken about here but you will get more attention. because it makes you look responsible like you have money and a good job and that you are willing to settle down o.o; (of course if you're really going for a family image, a saloon family car goes a long way xD)

yeees a lot of the business cars are usually diesel, but you get higher MPG so it usually works out if you do a lot of driving.

gotta admit though i do quite like -some- american cars... though usually only certain stand-out ones, or the ones that have been remodelled for the uk and europe... cos a lot of the time they seem to put less effort into the US versions :\ most of them struggle with corners, have no design style and the interiors are (quote by clarkson) "wheeley bin plastic" which i'll agree with - all the cars i went in in florida a few years back had horrible interiors. not saying that other country designs are much better, but there's more competition around europe to get the best for the cheapest.

america seems to control their own market over there. they have a monopoly on cars so they don't have to worry -quite- so much. that's my theory anyway. it's the only thing i can come up with unless they've just decided that americans are easy to con or something o-O;;

Well... most people buy a car for one thing - transportation. The interior is sort of an afterthought for most.

If the answer is yes to "Can it get me there?", the buyer is happy.

That's the thing. At least half the cars I listed in my last post fulfill those requirements, save for the price on the VWs, the Chrysler, Subarus, Saturns, and the Rogue.

This is exactly the kinda crap I hate. Put the money you blew on accessories toward GOOD cars that actually have half-decent engines. What a bunch of tools they are.

nono, if you wanna get a car that will attract the ladies (and you can't quite afford a supercar)

Only the stupid ones are attracted by supercars. Then again if you like stupid women that give in easily, then that's fine, too. ;)

Diesel has gotten cleaner, as well. Diesel engines themselves in general also provide substantially more torque than regular gasoline engines.

Right. This is partly because a lot of people in the U.S. that go car shopping are easily lured in by either "starting at xx,xxx dollars" "xx miles per gallon highway, xx city" or "zero to 60 in x.x seconds" depending on their interests and don't consider much else, especially cornering performance or maintenance costs. This is why companies like Hyundai, Suzuki, and Kia prosper as car manufacturers here in the States.

In an ideal world, but as I recall this reality is far from it.

Explain all of the craptacular cars still on the road then. Especially the ones I saw at work. >_<

Money problems, laziness...

And what I mean is that usually you don't see people buy ****ty cars when its time to get a new one. Unless your a teenager.

depends what you mean by craptacular... like actual down and busted cars or like just bad cars like a chavvy old ford escort that has been modded to hell with vinyl, speakers and LEDs...

my cousin has gone the chavvy route. and he has to drive me an mom places occassionally. it is honestly humiliating sitting in that thing...

@ DD: you're right about transportation for people who A) don't care about how the car looks, most people will not buy a car that looks god-awful, when you're buying a new car you look for a nice one right? B) care more about price than looks, if all they can afford is a no-frills used car then they will take what they can get, most if not all rich people drive nice cars or pay people to drive them

sod modding it up. if i were gonna get a car i'd either get a fancy modern one, or a kickass classic and spend money doing it up to modern safety standards o.o maybe like a dodge viper or whatever and spend money fixing up the body work and such xD

or a kickass classic and spend money doing it up to modern safety standards

I don't think you understand the concept behind "Classic cars". The whole point in classic restoration is to keep the car as close to its original factory standard as possible. You maintain its look, it's feel and its legacy with the features it was given during its manufacture.

If you were to do up a classic Jaguar E-type so it conformed to modern day safety standards, you would effectively have to rip out the old interior trim and remove the shell to weld in a front, side and rear impact protection systems, replace the wheel so it can accommodate airbags, install a modern day electrical system and sensors so that airbag can go off. Then there's extensive chassis reinforcement, overhauling the original shell you've taken off. Then you'd have to add extra needless weight to conform to modern standards. The list can and will go on... Before long, you've destroyed the priceless classic into non-recognition!

Safety features are not everything on a car Mina. Safety starts from the very person behind the wheel. Sure their are idiots around, but most crashes happen because of your own driver error. Not because someone else decided to overtake on a corner with you coming the other way.

Agreed with Saracen. Me, I love the older pickup body styles like the 80s S10, mid-90s Silverado/Sierra and mid-90s F150. And that you just can't modernize without destroying what made it great. The only modern things I'd have on one would be new tires, new wheels, a modern radio tuner and exhaust system. Kinda makes me wish I could have gotten that 93 F150 when I had the chance...

aaaah you mis-understand... i'm talking just real basic things. maybe putting in seatbelts in rear seats that don't have them. maybe an airbag for the driver and front passenger. beyond that... nothing too extensive... just some basics so that relatives won't be scared to ride with you x3

(cos believe me, riding in the rear seats of an old porsche that has no seatbelts there is pretty unnerving. my only comfort was that it was so darned cramped i couldn't move... of course when you think about it that means i also couldn't get out of the car should there be a crash x3; )

and half of what i say when i mean doing it up is just like replacing the original parts with brand new parts of the same type. just tracking down original parts to replace things that have broken y'know? of course i know there happens to be a company somewhere around england that works primarily to fix older cars with small modern parts (for instance, cars that have known unreliable parts like dodgy brakes or a transmission system etc will get replaced by modern parts. but then again that's not exactly keeping it classic x3 though if you are planning on driving the car it's a good investment...)
