Post Your Car!

I wonder how many people would rather spend money on there rigs than there cars....

Me. I don't like driving. Don't ever go anywhere anyway.

However, I've spent a total of 36.46% of the car on my computer. I'd rather spend it on the computer, it's just cheaper.

(Car = car + registration + repairs)

(Computer = computer + monitor + graphics card + power supply)

I didn't add fuel into the equation intentionally, nor did I put electricity in for the computer.

Then what do you consider to be power supply?

A 500 watt power supply unit. Distributes the power throughout the computer. Needed to replace the default 300 watt unit when I bought the graphics card to handle the extra requirements.

yah that's what i'm talking about xD; most of the people who have posted have old cars that probably don't even meet safety specs nowadays o-O

but yah i don't drive. nor does mom. we can't afford to have a car, we'd have nowhere to keep it and generally it's just impractical for us. it works out better to get the bus...

okie note i was talking about MYSELF AND MY MOTHER. not you. and last time i checked, america -did- have public transit. maybe not in your local town but cities do. i've seen it both when i went to florida and on the tv xD

and yah, why would we get a car though? we have nowhere to keep the car, fuel prices plus everything from MOT's to driver's licences to any repairs or anything... insurance... it just mounts up insanely high. why would we (me and mom personally) want a car when we struggle with money and we have a bus stop -literally- on our door step? (i'm not even joking. we have no front garden/yard and the bus stop is about 6 foot from our gate XD)

if i remember right it costs about £60 for a monthly bus pass that lets you travel anywhere in the area... mom takes the bus at -least- twice a day, every week day and most weekends too. moneywise it just works out. and at the moment i leave the house once or twice a week - generally taking the bus maybe 2 - 4 times in a fortnight...

I know what you meant but you make it sound so casual like everywhere has it. I don't have buses that run through my town and it's hard enough to even get a cab out here! So yar, I actually need my own vehicle.

Cars have to be inspected every year for safety standards, got it done a bit late but even with the rust hole it passed XD

and another one here who doesn't have public transportation, except for the train which is a 5-10 minute car ride away

once again, the whole time i have been refering to my situation. getting a car is just not practical. what i said about the other members was that "half of the other forum people have cars that probably don't even meet the current basic safety specs" >->

does that mean take a cab to work? no. it means update your car, either getting a new one or fixing it up >->

Yeah... like that's always cheap and easy. >_>

That train is why half the people you know live here.

...that's what, a 20 minute walk? o.O pish... and yah i know cars regually have to take MOT's but y'know, i know that say, an old porsche from the 70's which was designed with no seatbelts in the rear is legal because it wasn't designed to have them...

but it doesn't mean it's safe. somehow my support worker's car passed it's tests and there were so many things wrong with it. apart from the rust everywhere, parts of the car were missing (including a wing mirror), no belts in the back and the car would randomly shut off (which my care co-ordinator's car ALSO does, as well as having no wing mirror)

i don't know how detailed those tests are but surely a car with an engine that randomly turns off whilst driving and has only one wing mirror -can't- be safe o.O;

It's not. It's very unsafe. Reminds me of the Lease car I drove to the auction side. No side view mirrors and no rear view mirror. >_>

yah, well those two cars i mentioned weren't just temp cars... they were the permanent cars which they used all the time. and ontop of that because of their jobs they would often have to pick up patients and ride them about places.

...

i dunno about you but having to regually ride in a car every week which would randomly shut down about 3 times total on the way out and back again o.O; yaaaah... russian roulette much? o_O makes me think of deer hunter >->

it happened on the A127 a lot too c.c (small motorway, arterial route 127... not big enough to be a fully blown motorway like the M1 or M25 but large enough to have multiple lanes and cars going fast... so that was scareh)

Are you sure it was the motor shutting off or the driver improperly shifting? You can kill it if you shift wrong. I'm guilty as charged, then again, I'm atrocious with manuals. <3 my automatic.

i am positive. in BOTH cars, they had full petrol tanks, high/max battery power and they weren't even touching the gearstick. it happened either during driving along a straight at a constant speed or when traffic lights went green XD

at least at the traffic lights it's not so bad... you're already stopped you just have people honking you. but WHILST DRIVING at a high speed?! o-o;

maybe the engine had already been trashed for years and they just started responding to the abuse now

From my mechanical knowledge, it could be any of these:

  • Timing belt incorrectly fitted or tensioned.
  • Fuel filter choked.
  • Fuel pump faulty, or delivery pressure low.
  • Fuel tank vent blocked, or fuel pipes restricted
  • Uneven or low cylinder compressions.
  • Worn, faulty or incorrectly-gapped spark plugs.
  • Vacuum leak at the carburetor, throttle body, inlet manifold, or associated hoses.
  • Faulty carburetor.
  • Fuel injection system fault.
  • Clutch slipping.
  • Air filter element clogged.
  • Distributor cap cracked or tracking internally.
  • Faulty ignition coil.
  • Uneven or low cylinder compressions.
  • Camshaft lobes worn.
There's also a small possibility of oil being the factor, such as:

  • Low oil level, or incorrect oil grade.
  • Worn engine bearings and/or oil pump.
  • Excessively high engine operating temperature.
  • Oil pressure relief valve defective.
  • Oil pick-up strainer clogged.
So in conclusion, when engines have issues, they're a pain in the ass! :P

I don't have a pic of my own but I have the '93 Laredo model of DD's Jeep. Well, technically my dad paid for it but it is registered under my name. The only visual difference is the front bumper is uniform; that is to say, it doesn't bulge out under the headlights.

Mine does pretty good. I don't have the V8 engine, just the inline six.

As I'd said on MSN, if it's the same 4.0L inline 6 as mine, then be proud to possess Jeep's finest work. That engine will blast more torque at lower RPM than any of Jeep's V8s. Any of them. For those complaining about mileage, that engine, properly handled on highways and used for highway driving only, can provide 21-23 miles to the gallon. Alas, as I'm restricted to city commutes, I can only get 16-19 out of mine.

The car I buy with my own money for myself will be a mid-trim Ford Fiesta, and DD won't stop me >=3. Jeremy Clarkson's (overly-)balanced review on S12E06 of Top Gear had me wondering what it would be like if Ford were to be assed to manufacture the 65 mile-per-gallon ECOnetic (long story short it's not cost effective for them especially in their current financial positon, but that's their fault and it's another story altogether); I would personally guarantee Ford that it would sell well as it not only has a 20-25 mile-per-gallon advantage with a plain 1.6L diesel engine compared to a Prius, but produces even less carbon dioxide emissions (a Prius has 104 g/km of CO2 emissions; an ECOnetic Fiesta has 98g/km of CO2 emissions). I'm not making that up nor have I any reason to do so.

Ford Fiestas are good little cars. You probably would love this 2009 Fiesta. It looks good inside and out. Great interior trim, interesting range of colour options, and it does drive really smoothly. I took the 1.6 Diesel out on a test drive a few weeks ago and was surprisingly bowled over with how much an improvement it is over previous models. If I had the money, I probably would get myself one.

Final word. The Toyota Prius is crap! :P
