Julbri 0 Posted March 14, 2009 OK, heres a challange for you guys, i have spend hours talking to HP tech support trying to get them to find a way for me to fix my fingerprint reader and now it is worse the origanal problem was that the reader was "not detected" so i reset the driver, no fix, i updated driver and bios, no fix, so i talked to HP, they said to reinstall the software, i did, no fix, they said to do in in safe mode, no fix, they said to use the software manager to do it, and now its saying i dont have a fingerprint reader. so do you know better then them and me? figured id see how you all thought you were with tech support hence the poll Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted March 14, 2009 I'm good enough to do it for a living, which is what I hope to be doing here soon... Anyway, what's the make and model of that reader? The best way to find solutions is through a lot of google digging. Share this post Link to post
BioBen 3 Posted March 14, 2009 lol the last option was specifically for me wasn't it? Is this on 7 or vista or both? Share this post Link to post
Malevolence 6 Posted March 15, 2009 (edited) I am able to build, repair and troubleshoot computers, specifically desktop rigs and not mobile platforms such as laptop and netbooks. A newly acquired skill I got recently due to my fascination on computers. However my computer wasn't so great because of budget issues. It's an irony I guess. Julbri 0 Posted March 15, 2009 nwhat the model of the reader is, and i cant find out what it is because apparently its not connected, its vista Yea it was Bio Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted March 15, 2009 Ten bucks says you can't troubleshoot as well as you think you can, Malevolence. Not to be mean but it seems like a lot of people your age think they're great but they fall short of what they think they know. If you can't work on a laptop, you do fall short... but anyway, it's just my observation. Nothing meant by it tbh. nwhat the model of the reader is, and i cant find out what it is because apparently its not connected, its vista If it's a Vista addon, there's no driver to reinstall. However, given that there would have to be something that controls how it works, a driver would be a likely cause even though that sounds contradictory to what I just said. Does it spit out an error or just not work? If you don't mind, what type of laptop and flavor of Vista are you running? Share this post Link to post

Perhaps in the near future? Hmm. As for the troubleshooting issues, yes I have to admit things get pretty tricky and very time consuming to figure those errors and such. Believe me, even the experienced technicians are having headaches doing troubleshooting too. I did not say I was a professional, and I am just an amateur compared to them. it seems like a lot of people your age think they're great but they fall short of what they think they know. Do you know how old am I to begin with? Once again, just because I picked up the knowledge to build, repair and troubleshooting, I don't think I'm that great and I am just another average joe. Trust me, I still think there's alot to learn. Share this post Link to post

Even if it seems minor, post it anyway. A screenshot would be ideal but a verbatim transcript is fine too. When you were trying to use it before, did it have any errors that made you need to reinstall it the first place? I chose not go in depth with mobile platforms because I don't see a need to. Perhaps in the near future? Hmm. Considering laptops are becoming more prevalent, there should be a need since it's not all that hard. Believe me, even the experienced technicians are having headaches doing troubleshooting too. I did not say I was a professional, and I am just an amateur compared to them. The only real hard ones are funky blue screens but even those can be diagnosed if you look hard enough. It's not so much diagnosing and troubleshooting that's the issue. It's finding the actual fix for the problem, and some have no apparent fix outside of a rebuild. Do you know how old am I to begin with? Judging by the way you post, I'd venture a guess to anywhere between 19 and 22. Once again, just because I picked up the knowledge to build, repair and troubleshooting, I don't think I'm that great and I am just another average joe. Trust me, I still think there's alot to learn. I have too but I have an ace in the hole. I can always ask my dad for help but lately, I haven't needed him since I've been able to fix most problems myself. Let me ask you something, can you still troubleshooting legacy systems like Windows 2000, 98/SE, 95 and 3.1? I can. Share this post Link to post
Gben 20 Posted March 16, 2009 Just posting to say I'm interested in this thread because my vista laptop had similar issues with the finger reader as well. But it was more a gimmick for me, so never pursued fixing it. It worked for a while, and then it stopped reading my print, then there was an error, then I uninstalled it. Share this post Link to post
Julbri 0 Posted March 16, 2009 the first error was it said it was not detected so i reinstalled the driver, then it showed an error code while installing software for it as HP recommended, dont know the error codes or have screenshots, i can get screenys of it saying its not connected if you want Share this post Link to post

Which brand and type is your laptop? Use your warranty and contact that company. Repairs should be free, I believe. the first error was it said it was not detected so i reinstalled the driver, then it showed an error code while installing software for it as HP recommended, dont know the error codes or have screenshots, i can get screenys of it saying its not connected if you want Just bring it to their service centers and make a big fuzz about it. Use your warranty. Share this post Link to post

If I have that, I can probably find a fix or at least get a solution together. Just bring it to their service centers and make a big fuzz about it. Use your warranty. Nah. You only use the warranty when the thing refuses to boot or a chunk of hardware goes tits up. Share this post Link to post
Julbri 0 Posted March 17, 2009 tryed to reinstall factory driver and software on the scanner and that worked, no errors but still no fingerprint reader, just saying its not detected, maybe i need to pull it apart and check its pluged in..... also DD you should do the Just for giggles thing Share this post Link to post
BioBen 3 Posted March 18, 2009 Don't pull the thing apart, it's a laptop, you'll break something or won't be able to put it back together. Share this post Link to post
