Red Alert Confirmed For iPhone

Recommended Posts

If you have been following CNCNZ.com or APOC on Twitter you would found out by now that Red Alert is coming to an iPhone near you, and it will be at E3 this year. APOC posted this announcement on his Twitter page a couple days ago.

Command & Conquer Red Alert for iPhone will be at E3. I'll be dishing up some exclusive previews with @eamobile

Red alert, does he mean the original ported over or something? Or some ****ty cellphone Red Alert game?

I would assume either the original Red Alert, or what they did for the cell phone C&C3

I have no idea how this is going to work with all the limitations to begin with.

Even if it looks like a good news, but I'm worried it might fail just like the C&C3 game on mobile.

Don't know yet, wait for the previews that are coming soon.

Where's your stats and proof to back up that statement.

Although not technically fail, but if it succeeds, do we get a Kane's Wrath & RA3 on mobile? But after all these months, KW & RA3 for mobile are not available. So I can say is a partial fail & partial success, I apologize if that offends you.

This is interesting.

If this is indeed a complete port of the game, and not a rewrite, then I would say: nice initiative.

I have been curious whether or not EA still has the source code for the older games... I mean, if they have it they should really have done something with it, or release it to the community (oh, I forgot we are talking about EA, they never release source code).

I won't be as impressed if it turns out the game is just emulated somehow.

In any case, I will look forward to more news!

It can't be a port, does a iphone look like it has an over 2 ghz dual core in it or 1Gb RAM?

If it's original w00t! But i doubt that.

Probably something similar to the C&C mobile thing but hopefully better and more intuative use of the gravity stuff on iphones and touch stuff.

I don't believe that many companies that are still in business are in the habit of releasing their games to the public like that... I may be wrong but...

We're talking about Red Alert 1. So an iPhone shouldn't have any problem running something like that. :P

Well that's just one thing. The other question is how are they gonna implement stuff like hotkeys for e.g. "Ctrl + Number 1-0" as groups, "H" as home, etc etc. And since this is a touch based game, and I've used iPhone before, and with riflemen running around ingame in the iPhone its gonna be so bloody hard to select, isn't it.

That's why I'm asking, will that game succeed well and be better than that C&C3 mobile game? If the profit isn't all that good, you get the picture of what happens next.

You can do much more with a touchscreen than you think. Hell, you could even create "buttons" on the touch screen if you would need those. Hotkeys are handy indeed, but not really necessary to play the game.

A port is when the source code is "ported" over to that platform, i.e. it runs natively. I think you might be thinking about emulation, which requires a lot more powerful hardware than a native application.

Well... I can name some examples from the top off my head. id Software have always been true to the community by releasing the source code for their old games; quake, quake 2, quake 3, doom... the list goes on. Also, Relic released the source code for Homeworld (that game is really awesome btw). There are more companies, but a search on google would be better than asking me.

The important point to make is that the companies are not hurt by releasing the source code... Releasing the source code does not mean that the game is gratis. It's only the source code for the executables which becomes free, not all the textures/maps/FMVs etc.

A company who releases the source code for one of their game supports the community and empowers them to continue the legacy of the game when the company have no financial interest in the game anymore.

In the case of TibDawn and RA1, these games are really, really old, so releasing the source code would have virtually no effect on EA as a company, they would only show that they care about us.

But I guess that will never happen.

BTW I have C&C3 on my Nokia E71, it's not touch screen but I can see the potentials there. Note that you build your base in turn-based mode (sorta) and you only control 2 groups/squads at any one time. With this annoucement, I would expect this to be a RA3 game not an older one.

I'll have to set up a camera and film a mission for you guys... (maybe next week!)

I'd be interested in seeing that, I've never seen the game in action. Only this pic....

Your wish is my command...

Actually as far as I know, nobody has done it (posted footage) at least there was none when I was looking for it before I purchased it.

Heh... it's like the original Donkey Kong when you compare it with the RA video on the Iphone...
