Command & Conquer 4's DRM Causing Problems

Recommended Posts

Eurogamer reports that the DRM part of Command & Conquer 4 has been causing problems for many gamers since the game release last week. There are many people who don't like the fact you need a permanent connection to the internet at all times to play, even if its just single player. The Russian and French version of the game have already been patched in a effort for correct these issues. But I'm pretty sure they were launcher errors, nothing to do with DRM requirements. Here's part of the article from Eurogamer.

Command & Conquer 4's requirement of a permanent internet connection is causing problems, with some purchasers unable to play properly since the game's release last Friday.

One reader wrote to Eurogamer describing numerous crashes after "unexpected loss" of internet. Repeat failures were met with the message, "We will contact you with a solution." Crashing loses in-game progress.

This apparently occurred on both Saturday and Sunday. And this experience doesn't appear to be isolated; the game's forums are awash with complaints.

I've had some problems myself, where Command & Conquer 4 will simply crash and return the Windows desktop without any form of an error message. With patience I'm sure these issues will be fixed. Click here for the original article.

I had this problem with the english version of the game and it was very annoying. To make things a little bit worse, my modem was acting in bad faith, making me go offline once in a while. Anyway, the DRM has crashed my game after I re-login with my persona, bringing me back to the desktop with a crash and, at one occasion, I was almost forced to restart my pc because of the crash. I hope they patch the english version as well.

Haha! This bug goes all the way back to the beta - sometimes, the game would repeatedly load the same patch every time you loaded up the game. There were also a whole string of sessions where I lost connection for no explainable reason. This should have been fixed then!

A working offline patch & crack was released about 2 days after retail release. So really, why dont EA follow suite?

I notice that if you click anything upon booting hte game up before it "logins" to the EA servers, it'll crash.

Also, don't forget Sonic, C&C4 doesn't have any DRM. EA said so themselves on numerous occasions. ;) This always online business is completely different from DRM. :P

For me, it crashes quite often when I'm just entering the main menu (after the logo). When it goes right, I get a "joined GeneralXX" message. When it doesn't, it crashes to the desktop. The worst streak I've had was 5 crashes in a row.

Can't play on the dam thin soon has the first mission is loaded just about to start its crashes. So you can say I have not play on it yet on the day I got it which is now 3 days a go, and still not been on the first mission yet becouse it crashes there, or some times on the ingame menu.

I know from a long time a go the game was crap, but I didn't know that it was not going to work full stop, what a waste of my bloody money.

I only got C&C 4 becouse it was the last C&C game also for the stroy line and the campaigns, but other than that in short 100% crap.

C&C 4 needed at lest one more years work on it or more, not a rush rush cheap way made game.

You know those who downloaded the game illegally already have a patch (crack) to play offline and don't have to deal with the B.S. like the paying customer! It's like EA put a 300 pound turd in 10-ton safe!

I suddenly feel relieved that I didn't rush out and buy it. Some day, when all these problems are fixed and nobody talks about crashes anymore I may buy it.

There's nothing worse about games than buying one that doesn't run properly imo.

Ever played SunAge? That game was riddled with more bugs than a bug hive. 8 patches and some good tech support later, and issues still aren't completely fixed.

But for SunAge, it's different. That game has a 1-guy development team, and some artists. And almost all issues have been fixed now.

Say what you want, but at least it didn't crash 4 times in a row upon game startup... Like C&C4 just did to me, again.

I hate to say I told you so. I also know I wasn't the only one who said it:

This kind of DRM-tech is only a headache for the consumer. The pirates will still find ways around it (and they did).

The only good thing EA can do now is to release a patch to get rid of the connection requirement. Anything else is just another insult.

If they do that i might still go out and buy this game.

There's no doubt it will be patched very soon. That's the least they can do at this point for those who bought the game.

Sadly, I'm not at all sure they will remove the internet requirement for the single player game with a patch.

They already got the money so they really have nothing to loose except bad rep and they got that before the release anyway...

Bad reputation costs EA a whole lot more than this patch would. If the "DRM" continues to cause crashes and other problems, we will eventually get a patch that removes it.

Hey guys,

Yes I check this forum daily =) No, I have not been posting frequently here, but I do my best to spread the love around, you know that. I try and reply in threads that need me most, hard to stay above water on everything. Our official forums are quite the beast!

Just wanted to let you guys know we are looking in to the online issues. Most people can login and play just fine, but if you are having online issues, try to post specifics when the problem occurs. I know it can be random, but any further details helps us repro.

Thanks guys and apologies for any inconvenience this may or might be causing you. I've got your back, I am all over it as best I can with our dev team.

No, SunAge didn't use to crash four times in a row on me...

...it crashed eight!

And yeah, I guess that's a given, Vertex 4 are only 50 guys. I wonder what they're doing now?

Actually SunAge is pretty stable now with all the patches installed.
