Based on what indeed.... can't be sales, cause otherwise something like WiiFit would have to be in that list.

Its always best to post a link to the source of such news. Found this Gamasutra....

Guinness World Records revealed its reader-voted list of the "Top 50 Videogame Series" of all time, with Bungie's flagship franchise Halo taking the number one spot. The company, which tracks and recognizes record-breaking achievements, notes that the series is the "Best-Selling First-Person Shooter (FPS) Franchise Ever", too.

More than 13,000 readers voted for the list in an online poll hosted on the company's Gamer's Edition website between January and August 2009. The list is featured in the Guinness World Records 2010 Gamer's Edition, a variant of the popular record-keeping reference book dedicated to achievements by video games and their players.

Activision Blizzard's Call of Duty franchise and Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda series placed second and third on the list respectively. The full list of Guinness World Records's "Top 50 Videogame Series" follows

  1. Halo
  2. Call of Duty
  3. The Legend of Zelda
  4. Guitar Hero
  5. Metal Gear
  6. Super Mario Bros.
  7. World of Warcraft
  8. Gears of War
  9. Super Smash Bros.
  10. Grand Theft Auto
  11. Pokemon
  12. Resident Evil
  13. Fallout
  14. Half-Life
  15. Sonic the Hedgehog
  16. Counter-Strike
  17. Runescape
  18. FIFA
  19. Kingdom Hearts
  20. Final Fantasy
  21. Pac-Man
  22. Madden NFL
  23. The Sims
  24. Tomb Raider
  25. WWE Smackdown Vs. RAW
  26. Rock Band
  27. LittleBigPlanet
  28. Saints Row
  29. The Elder Scrolls
  30. God of War
  31. GoldenEye 007
  32. Bioshock
  33. KillZone
  34. Skate
  35. Left 4 Dead
  36. Need for Speed
  37. Chrono Trigger
  38. Gran Turismo
  39. StarCraft
  40. Ratchet & Clank
  41. Pong

  48. Burnout
  49. Crash Bandicoot
  50. Pro Evolution Soccer
"We decided to take a different approach with this list than we did in the previous edition," says Guinness World Records gaming editor Gaz Deaves. "Instead of asking developers, industry insiders and journalists to rank their favorite titles, we approached a different kind of expert: the players themselves! We are confident that this 'top 50' more accurately reflects the tastes of the average gamer and not just the critics."

So it was fan voted, not a really Guinness World Records type of thing if you ask me.

And no C&C? Who cares. C&C has been in the Guinness World Records already.

Command & Conquer's long history resulted in Guinness World Records awarding the series 6 world records in the Guinness World Records: Gamer's Edition 2008. These records include "Biggest Selling RTS Series", "Most Number of Platforms for an RTS", and "Longest Running Actor in Video Game Role" for Joe Kucan, who has played the part of Kane, the villainous mastermind of the series, for 15 years.

This is exactly what makes it Guiness World Records unworthy.

Yeah, forgot to post the link. And I'm sorry if I offended you.

But honestly, I'm just surprised that the biggest RTS franchise didn't make it to a top 50?

We all know C&C is huge and we don't a stinking Guinness World Record to prove that.

Although the C&C series have ups and downs, it's still by a long shot in the long term.

Besides I disagree with the number one best game series of all time because it doesn't deserve that number one spot. As of now, where's Halo 3 and expansion pack for the PC version, hmmm? It should be the GTA series, since that gaming series has sold more sales than the Halo series and GTA4 is one of the best games of all time; and the Half-Life series should be in the Top 10. Therefore. this list is definitely 100% total disagreement. Everyone knows that Gordon Freeman was voted last year's game hero of the year (in Gamespot) who beat Mario on a voting stun-out.

That's not enough votes to make it official. A million will do.

Then why all the hate? Look I'm not trying to offend anyone, I just wanted to discuss the list, not whether GWR sucks or not.

Purplescrin, I agree your points.

As soon as I saw Halo on the top, I knew this list was a lie.

Ditto on that. There is no way Halo is the best game from any perspective.

Heh, same.

This list is not legit. Guiness ideally should be records only of hard facts like most sales, not something subjective like a biased fan poll.

D14810 don't be an apologist.

I'm not. I greatly disagree with the list as well. I where actually a bit frustrated when I received the list in an e-mail. I used to like GWR but now I look at it with more skeptical perspective.

They should have made the poll "official" like the one with Super Mario vs Gordon Freeman if you know what I mean. I'm sure the list would be very different.

QFT. This poll is a disaster knowing that CNC isn't well known anymore to most game players. Besides the CNC series lasted longer than most type of game series. The longest game series are the Mario and Final Fantasy series. Call of Duty series at #2 is okay but should have been #1. The Halo series have faded since GTAIV's success two years ago.

Another error is that the Warcraft series is not in the Top 50 as well, seemingly after the overwhelming of the MMORPG franchise (which is World of Warcraft) that started it all.

Not only the C&C community are going to be so disappointed about this, so will the Warcraft and Blizzard community. Next time if there's something like this poll again, I believe there's will be huge attention to the game world and their communities that they need to watch this.

I wonder how much Bill paid to put Halo up there..

Bungie doesn't answer to Microsoft; they're just a publisher. This was voted on by the fans anyway so the list is a lie.
