Is the secret to Coca-Cola out?

 

With ingredients like 20 drops of orange oil, 30 drops of lemon oil and 10 drops of nutmeg oil, it sounds more like a home remedy than a top-secret formula.

 

But an American blog claims it has uncovered the exact recipe for Coca-Cola in the pages of a 1979 newspaper.

 

The UK's Daily Mail reports the blog thisamericanlife.org published a photograph of a handwritten recipe for Coca-Cola from a February edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

 

The blend of oils - also including coriander, neroli and cinnamon oils - and alcohol is reported to be the formula for the so-called "Merchandise 7X", which gives the famed soft drink its distinctive flavour.

 

The blog has also included a recipe published in a book in the 1990s, which is similar to the 1979 version, but calls for four times as much of each of the oils.

 

The soft drink was created in 1886 by pharmacist John Pemberton in Atlanta, Georgia and the recipe has always been kept under wraps.

 

Legend has it that the exact details of the recipe are kept locked in a bank vault in Atlanta.

Its going to be more expensive and time consuming to gather all those ingredients and start making your own coke, than simply buying it. I mean its not like Coke is in any way expensive.

Fact is, some bored guy with abundant time on his hands, has probably been busy over the last 50 years trying to make his own to as close a flavour as Coca-Cola himself. Once somewhat perfected... unleash the conspiracy!

 

Not that modern day cola tastes anything like its 19th century counterpart. The real recipe probably was more like home-made hooch, guarenteed to destroy your ability to taste for about an hour, and give you a high similar to what cocaine does. The original recipe did contain cocaine back then since it was widely used in the medical profession along with several hard drugs.

 

I'm pretty sure that the original formula was probably called Cocaine-Collagen. Full of a nice hard drug, and Vitamin C (explains why Neroli is used)... Probably a suggested medicine for scurvy no doubt. With the Vitamin C repairing the damage, and the coke to kill the pain. Probably had some other crazy stuff in there as well that isn't listed.

you might want to check wikipedia on that first. 'Coca' referred purely to the coca plant used as ingredient, but even the original contained little actual cocaine, and the 'Cola' part was derived from the Kola nut, which contains caffeine.
