Team Fortress 2 FREE OF CHARGE!

Huge news! Valve have just announced that Team Fortress 2 is now a free to play game, permanently. The game will solely be supported by in-game item purchases only. Team Fortress 2 was in the middle of a "free week", and has now become amazingly, absolutely, free!

Valve's Robin Walker said "We've been toying with the idea of making Team Fortress free-to-play ever since the Mann-conomy update, the data we got back from that update leads up to believe that TF2 would be more successful as a completely free product."

Industry trade website Develop-Online has revealed in an interview with Valve’s Robin Walker that Team Fortress 2 is now permanently free to play, and will solely be supported by in-game item purchases.

 

TF2′s switch to F2P was rumored and expected, but perhaps not this soon. Walker says that Valve had been exploring the idea since September 2010. “We’ve been toying with the idea of making Team Fortress free-to-play ever since the Mann-conomy update,” Walker said. “The data we got back from that update leads us to believe that TF2 would be more successful as a completely free product.” Read the rest of the interview with Walker at Develop-Online.

 

Prior to today, Team Fortress 2 was in the middle of a “free week.” The game’s Über Update should deploy later this evening.

I heard about this, I was reading another message board and damn was there some SERIOUS QQing going on. Seems some of the 'hardcore veterans' feel they should be 'properly' compensated, because now they have to deal with 'newfags'... LOLOLOLOLOL....

Free to own and play TF2? The SP portion only has 9-10 maps to play with whereas the rest of them must use a console to get the AI bots working ingame. Otherwise the rest of the dozens of MP maps are to be played as MP.

 

Next time Valve, make Half-Life 1 free of charge long before Black Mesa is released.

Haha.. I've seen some whiners. I'm one of the "hardcore veterans" of Team Fortress 2 , I've played the game pretty close since its release on the Orange Box and it's definitely a lot different... the player base too. But overall I liked the fresh amount of players the updates brought in and everything. I don't really like the changes they've made in terms of items, crafting, and hats, but it doesn't really affect gameplay so I don't care.. But I guess I'm just sensible and most other TF2 players aren't

Lol. SP was added later through updates in TF2. It was made without any SP, it wasn't meant to even be played offline or in single player to begin with.
