Throwback Thursday for 16th April

Its Throwback Thursday time once again. And today we are really winding back the clock, 20 years to be exact, to the original Command & Conquer in August 1995. It features something that has disappeared from the more recent Command & Conquer games, and probably from many other games too. The score screen. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge were the last C&C games to have a score screen. And up to those games, Frank Klepacki even wrote music just for the the score screens. Back in the old days, after you completed that hard fought mission in the either GDI or Nod campaigns you were shown this screen that summarised how good you were. Yeah you beat the mission but the score screen always said you could have done better. And like all classic games of that era, you could type in your initials next your score for that extra ego boost!

Check back again next Thursday for another Throwback. Send in your ideas for future instalments. We encourage you to share this on social media using the hash tags #CnCTBT and #CNCNZTBT.

Score screens are still in, though iirc in TW they don't show it for campaign missions. But Gens, RA3, and TT all show score screens after every mission, and all games show score screens after Skirmish/MP matches.

They just aren't as flashy as the original score screen where the bar kills the guys when expanding, and the building that explodes.

If you count statistics as the same thing as scores. If any games after Yuri's Revenge still had "points", I don't remember them. I guess TT had experience, which is similar, though I've forgotten how it was presented as I only played that game once.

At least Generals still had points, later games had efficiency percentages instead.

Did it? I thought Generals just had troops/vehicles/buildings built/destroyed, but no "point" system.

I think the overall score was eventually deleted in 1.5 or 1.6 or something as it was just adding up everything.

Not quite C&C but still SAGE: BFME campaign score screens were really extensive in what they showed (ex: http://pnmedia.gamespy.com/planetcnc.gamespy.com/features/reviews/bfme/scores.jpg )

In the Unit Veterancy tab you were even able to rename individual units (or squads if it was a squad) (veteran units did transfer to the player army on the living world map).

The score screens that disappeared are these ones. Not some boring screen with a bunch of stats.

A while back for fun i modded and modeled a dirty version of the tiberium silo for TW. It is basicly made out of 3 moving cilinders that extend up and subtrack underground depending on how full they are....i took inspiration from the money piles in the original c&c scorescreen. Whenever i play that part of my mod i feel real nostalgic watching those cilinders raise and lower while you hear the deposit sound effect in the background <3

Not even RA2 had flashy screens like that. At most you can consider TS/FS having something similar. Edited by Lauren

To be frank, the "older" score screens, while giving a bit of nostalgia for the good old times, are not very helpful. Never figured out how exactly those points were counted (didn't ever particularly try, but still). The stats introduced in TW were more insightful on each player's achievements in multiplayer (especially average income and the like) and were a better idea, IMO.

Do agree with Plokite_Wolf. Though there were already a few good stats shown in Generals.
