Can't get Starcraft II terrain textures into C&C3 Worldbuilder

Recommended Posts

Yes, I managed to get all RA3, C&C4, Generals and even BFME I/II terrain textures into C&C3 successfully and that's a whole bunch of terrain textures. I also managed to extract only the selected good Starcraft II terrain textures from their MPQ files before Legacy of the Void. After LOTV, all the files have been changed to a format that even the MPQ editor cannot open since they are all data format files that ends with a number.

When I extracted them, they are in DDS format mostly in the resolution size of 512 x 512, 32bpp and in 10 frames. Converting them to TGA wasn't an issue either. But no matter if it's dds or tga, the C&C3 Worldbuilder is unable to read them and reads out as missing textures. So far with SCII, KW, RA3, C&C4, Generals and BFME I/II, I merged them with OS Big Editor to a terrain BIG file at around 500 MB. The total count of all terrain textures I have collected is 2144 of them, excluding C&C3 terrain and NRM files.

Something tells me those SCII texture files may have something (like sense code protection) that C&C3 is unable to read. After all, those textures are from another game engine. Would it even matter if terrain textures from another game engine cannot be read in SAGE?

Your lack of understanding basic principles is always amusing.

Also wtf you abbreviating starcraft with ST?

Oops. I may have mis-abbreviate ST with another game.

But guys I still need an answer on what's going on with those texture files. If there is a special need of re-conversion, I need to know what that is.

Think you could share your terrain ready to use sources with us? I'm sure Zypher will be happy to add them to his gigantic collections, he plan to release it one day to the public so we all get something at the end of the day : P

Maybe, but only the SCII terrain textures. The rest of them will be released publicly unless those SCII terrain textures show up in Worldbuilder.

That's strange, I once did make them all uncompressed TGAs without RLE and still they did not show up in Worldbuilder. Hmmm. I'll try again.

It appears someone (including Sonic) does not appreciate the terrain texture pack release involving BFME and SCII terrain, thinking I did not mention/credit both EA/Blizzard for the terrain. That's because I haven't found the people to ask for permission (otherwise I would have mentioned them). It'll be very difficult for me to contact and ask permission a developer or developers who does terrain textures for both BFME and SCII and the one person who came up in my mind is Dustin Browder (he has a Twitter account btw).

You clearly should not have put the Blizzard textures in.

Nobody cares about the BFME textures (it's an EA game after all).

Remove the Blizzard textures.

If C&C files have been widely distributed for two damn decades without incident, then so can Blizzard's. Blizzard games also have modding communities.

Technologically, BFME is very related to C&C. Also, it falls to the abandonware/licensing hell category so deeply that very visible full game download links for all three BFME titles on Forshire's site, GameReplays and Revora have gone unsanctioned.

True, but I did not credit Blizzard for the terrain textures since SCII already has modding capabilities and everyone can mod/distribute any way they want. As of now, I may believe that Sonic (and some others) do not want me to release any assets (even for a mod) that is not from C&C or SAGE unless used with permission. I already removed all download links related to SCII.

You can't just go and rip stuff of other games. Recreating is already a somewhat grey area, but just ripping them with the intention of using it in another game which is not made by the same developer is illegal. And even if it was also a grey area Sonic has every right to prohibit such actions as it's his responsibility to make sure there is no illegal activity on his page.

Half of ModDB is illegal, then. I believe you have too stern of a view on that word.

First of all, Blizzard have had a C&C mod shut down before, because it was based on their IP.

Second, my statement concerning BFME and the textures from that game is that it does not matter, because it is a SAGE engine EA published game.

Nobody cares as in 'it's the Blizzard textures that are the issue, not BFME'.

Discussion is irrelevant, a decision has been made, and people who have made their mind up about these kind of things, are not in the habit of changing it.

I might believe licensing prevents any Blizzard game content to be used in other games even with or without permission. Besides Blizzard already had some C&C ideas into Starcraft II without EA's permission.

Since I read what I want to know, I already have a feeling (and a disturbance in the force) this will turn into a modding war (and flame war) between Blizzard/Starcraft haters vs C&C haters. Therefore my final decision despite the experiment that worked, I will not mention, develop and release anything related to Blizzard and (other RTS gams) into a C&C game.

Moderators, I would like this thread locked. End of discussion.
