It's because I shrank the original using Paint

The shrinking in Paint woodn't pixilate it, it's because you saved it as a jpg using Paint.

Paint is awfull for saving things such as a jpg, it compresses them a lot. Using Photoshop or Paintshop Pro enables you to set the compression value, so you could set it higer for increased clarity.

Yeah but of the majority of the forum population that will not see, or even reply to this thread, it makes me wonder whether or not people are just changing their avatars and signatures for the sake of it.
