Next U.S.S.R?

Recommended Posts

With the sudden, massive build-up in conventional and nuclear warfare equipment, it begs the question. Is China poised to be the next U.S.S.R? Also, what does this mean for Taiwan? As you know, China sees Taiwain as a "Renegade State", and has wanted to "re-take" it since its foundation after the 1949 communist take-over. Could China launch an invasion of Taiwain in the near future? What are you thoughts on this?

China will never become an equivalent to the USSR, simply because their government is fair, and they negotiate with other countries.

No because over the years the USA has managed to break down the Chinese communist rule ever since the death of Mao Zedong...

I heard theres McDonalds resturants there now...

we will probably never see the equivalent of the USSR again... China is smart enough to know that an aggressive invasion of another country would be suicide. After so much historical precedent, there is no way they would pull something so avert. The US is keeping the peace, as usual :D

and yes, they are very modernized- even with McDonald's as Gazdude pointed out- plus the advent of the internet- and so they aren't NEARLY as set apart from the world as Russia was.

Now what does scare me is the EU... "communism lite," plus the looming Islamic movement....... yikes

Yeah and WW3 (the apocolypse)

Nope.

Besides now would be a good time to go to war with Taiwan anyway... Doubt that states are going to want to be involved in 2 wars at the same time...

oh, we can handle it :D

The US military is the single greatest force this planet has ever seen... plus, none of the civilized world would stand for a move like that on China's part. It just ain't gonna happen. Nuclear weapons have effectively stopped territorial expansion like that. The natural flow of conquest and war has been abruptly halted by the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Invade a country, get nuked.

Oh, and I think that America handled the double war with Japan and Germany just splendidly in WWII. Since then, America has grown in power even further. We're not afraid of a 2 front war , and China will not be dumb enough to start one.

Anyway this should really be moved to the Gen Discussion forum. Instead of the Community news.... Unless you all think this is community news.. hehe

Oh yeah and that article of yours was back in 97. Lots of stuff has changed in that time... Not that I bothered to read ya article anyway. ;)

Just tell me that any of that is untrue. America rocks, and this prejudice AGAINST it is something that I just can not lower myself to understand.

...and what article are you talking about?

lol... America couldnt handle a war with China, their population is too large and they have enough nuclear weapons to take out the earth and mars...

If their was a nuclear apocolypse, no doubt over half the survivors would be chinese so technically they would win...

Thats why they decided to inject capitalism and corrupt the communist rule instead.. Which worked a treat, China is a puppy dog now compared to what it used to be 30 odd years ago...

How could half of them survive? There 1 Billion of them put in a small piece of land, thats an easy target for Nuclear weapons.

I thought that it was kockroaches that could survive nukes

Most of the nukes would be heading for important military installations and strategic poits rather than trying to kill the entire population..

Bah, all of you are still thinking 'Cold war'. This is the new age. We've got new toys to play with instead of just nukes, tanks, soldiers, and subs. America is finally getting around to working on the fabled 'Missle Shield', or at least right now they are testing plane-based anti-missle lasers, so IBCMs may become obsolite in the future.

The new age of warfare will be the information war, especially with everything becoming more computerized. Why spend all the money invading a country when you can attack their infastructure and communications from your homeland? You can send mis-information, getting countries to attack each other then move in and pick up the pieces when there done. You may be even able to black out communications, so a country doesn't know it's invaded until they see troops marching past their house.

For example, China's ECM 'laser' (The real one, not the tank. By the way all of C&C: Generals' weapons are based on real ones that are actual and in the prototype stage, neat huh?) is being deployed along the Taiwan border. It can be used to jam communications. When this technology becomes more developed, they may be able to cut off communication to a battlefield from a mobile command center, and perhaps even deploy the damn thing on satillites and prevent communication with nuke silos, rendering America's ICBMs useless.

Then we have the whole space colonization thing coming into reach. Japan companies are already planning space vacations available to the average working man by 2010, and space 'resorts' could become a reality in the near future. We've got the whole star wars thing coming up anyways. Most of us will probably see moon bases and arguements over ownership of astroids and planets before we die (hey, we went from the first plane to space flight in under 50 years)

good thinking Luk3us. In an argument like that, your side can do nothing BUT dig a hole. America rocks, 'nuf said. :D

Is the measure of a country's military power its population? It was a long time ago... nowadays we don't all pick up spears and go at it. Just because China has a massive population doesn't mean that they could stand up to a country like America (the most powerful in history...). As Thierry pointed out, in a nightmare scenario, the NUMBER of people in the relatively small country won't necessarily determine who will survive. We would all be vapor, especially those in countries with centralized populations like China.

Yes it does, why do you think in Generals for every one red guard you got 2 units...

And why didnt your country attack China in the past?

Oh yeah thats right because they wouldve gotten owned, it wouldve been Vietnam all over again...

oh man... this thread is about REAL LIFE, Gazdude. Now that is just embarrassing.

...and we didn't attack China in the past because we had no reason to do so. We resort to violence only when necessary. Oh, and that Vietnam argument has gotten really old. Vietnam (our SINGLE military defeat) was a fluke. It was not lost because we were overpowered, but it was lost because we allowed politics to dictate our actions. We weren't there to win. You ought to show a little respect and be glad you aren't speaking German

*Cough* The War of 1812, fended off US invasion, set the white house on fire. *Cough*

And speaking strategically, a China-US war would most likely be a stalemate. Excluding a nuclear standoff, China could easily hold its own against the US. High population and numbers gives a major advantage to defenders, especially with a country with China's population. While America could use their air superiority to their advantage, the war would definately wear on for a VERY long time due to China's high population and physical mass, and the Americans would most likely be forced to withdraw due to the high casualties and the high expenses of maintaining a war that long with the number of troops needed to invade and hold Chinese soil.

*cough* War of 1812 established American independence, not an actual defeat *cough*

*cough* find a relevant example *cough*

yeah, no question invading a country like China would be a MAJOR problem... but the US has overcome impossible odds in the past. It all depends on the measure of our resolve. Since the 60s, I don't know if we have that kind of resolve anymore. The weak liberal menality has crippled our national "spine."

anyway, realistically I don't think this scenario would ever come to fruition . We should hope not, at least.

What about the Bay of Pigs that didnt realy go to plan did it?

http://www.parascope.com/articles/1296/bayofpigs.htm

and more recently what happened in Somalia

http://slate.msn.com/?id=2060941

Also if you were refering to America saving Britain against Germany in WW2 then you must not know that Britain won the Battle for the Skies over Britiain (With pilots from Poland, France and Greece aswell as pilots from other members of the comonwealth). This made it imposible for Germany to invade Britain (which they didnt want to go to war with the first place) and the move the attention to who they realy wanted to fight with was Russia.

Why would I be glad that I can not speak German, as they are fellow members of the EU and it would make good bussiness sense learning German.

Although China has a big population now, its population is going down due to its 1 child policy. Most of its workforce will retire, and it won't have such a large population in teh next few decades.

War of 1812: As I said, it established American independence and was not a defeat. If anything it was a stalemate, but what was important was that it put America on the map as an actual nation and not just a pissed off colony. It was no military defeat.

Bay of Pigs: ugh, what a mess. Way to go Kennedy. Anyway, that was not a military defeat, but a failed revolutionary startup. It was a bad way of going about regime change. No American soldiers died; it was more of a failed bit of diplomacy than anything. NOT a military defeat.

Somalia: Once again, way to go Clinton. ugh. That was not an actual war, but I will concede that it was a military defeat. Like Vietnam, a foolish president foolishly allowed politics to interfere with the military, whose job is to kill people and break things. Only 18 Americans died, so it was not a major defeat, however.

My central point is that America has had no MAJOR military defeats since or even before Vietnam, and I don't think anyone can deny that America is the most powerful nation in history.

About the German speaking thing... that was just a (not) clever way to bring up how America did a WHOLE lot to save Europe in WWII. And yes, I know plenty about WWII history... but thanks anyway. Britain won the Battle for the Skies over Britain also with the aid of American men and hardware. Do not forget that we were (and are!) your best ally, and you ours. And dude.... don't take stupid sayings like that literally. I happen to like the German language, and I was really saying nothing about whether you should learn it NOW. Geez.

Yeah, if the americans weren't sending huge amounts of aid frim their convoys, than britain would have lost. The germans would have kept ont the offensive. They would have time to develop their v2 rocket more, develop their jets, like the ME 262 & Komet, and Britain would have lost. Many think the mustang was the best fighter of WWII, but in fact, near end of WWII, the Germans had superior planes like the FW 190, and TA 152. They would have made mincemeat out of the mustangs and your spitfires if they were produced in bigger numbers. Their tanks were superior in every way. The tiger or panzer could take out a sherman from far away, while the sherman couldn't penetrate the the germans frontal armor at point blank range. They only worked if they fired at the side or back. the germans developed the STG 44, the ancestor to the AK47 and M16, while the allies had their BARS, thompsons, etc. The allies won, becuase the US sent so many tanks and trops and planes, they overwhelmed the Germans.

The Germans were more technologically advanced during WWII.

But thats the past. Today, we are the sole superpower.

Going to global affairs:

I believe the UN is holding America down in many places. Iran and N Korea needs a TOTAL BAN on nukes, not a compromise. They have WMDS. The French protested our invasion of Iraq because they were making money from oil through the corrupt food-for-oil program. Serves them right when the million dollar reconstuction contracts are given to US, British and nations assisting in Irag companies.

It was the russians who overwehelmed Germany.

The main contribution The other allies was creating multiple fronts (france, italy, North Africa) to thin out the german resources and to destroy german industries. All but 2 of the Germans advanced aircraft were built for either short range air defence or anti-tank roles which good was good for defense if they could have created them in enough numbers. The other two which were both long range bombers on being a heavy bomber (dubbed the new york bomber which successfuly flew to within 15 miles of new york and back without being detected) and the other being a delta wing shape (test model was built and flown which gave the germans surprising results to find out that it was near invisible to the radar of its time) Both these aircraft couldnt and wouldnt be able to be built with enough numbers to be effective unless they carried a nuke (which they were both capible of) but that was not a possiblity as the germans only hardwater plant was destroyed in Norway by Free Norweigen Commandos sent in by the British. Germany were the only nation to have advance aircraft as near the end of WW2 Britain had there own jet fighter called the metor which had a major advantage over any german aircraft which was there reliabilty. One German piloted the Me 262 and later on flew the Metor in Agentina said if you combined the Me 262 capabilty with the performance of the metor you would have the perfect plane.

Also the Americans didnt send aid to Britain through the convoys as it was bought goods this includes the weapons.

P.S Im quite enjoy this discussion with you even though it has deviated away from the main topic :D
