World War 3?

Recommended Posts

Just for the sake of argument, would World War 3 be another big battle between planes, tanks and infantry?

I actually don't think so, It will probably be a war about who has the best long range missiles and nukes.

A whole army of Challenger 2 Tanks, M1A2 Abrams and more could be wiped out in a single blast.

So what do you think would World War 3 look like?

And what are the odds of it starting?

Oh poor Thierry no one posted...

Anyway onto your topic. I don't really see there being a full scale nuclear war any time soon. Though there is always the possibility of a few countries throwing nukes around. Like India and Pakistian.

I don't see the point in building one here. Who'd want to nuke NZ?... Apart from Australia.... :?

The War on terror is already World War 3 in my opinion. Even if it isn't officially named as such.

But the official world war 3 won't be any time soon... We are more likely to face machines as our biggest fight for survival in a Terminator/Matrix type war.

well I wouldn't say that it's likely, King ... but yeah, I would agree that the broader war on terror is a global conflict between the civilized world and muslim extremism, and could be considered a third world war. It's at least as close as we're going to get. Nukes have changed everything, and now the possibility of a true military powerhouse moving against another power seems less and less likely, as a nuclear holocaust would end any outright aggression. The major countries of the world are pretty much frozen in place, and the type of audacity we saw with Hitler pre-WWII will not again happen, because everyone has nukes pointed at everyone else.

Think of it this way... in a bad movie, when like five people have guns drawn on each other, they are all frozen in place, unable to make a move for fear of being shot to pieces along with everyone else in the room. A sort of equillibrium is acheived. The terrorist rats, however, are free to scurry around the people's feet, and that's where the true danger now lies. Unfortunately the rats can hide in the clothing of some of the larger nations as well, where it's harder to step on them

Nice metaphor

Well thank you! I like it too :D

well, then the nations can go clean themselves and shoot the rats, then point their weapons at each other again.

Or we have 1 nation KILL all the rats, like the US :D

Well I doubt that a very intelligent AI would build massive bots and all, but if you look at it from an AI's point of view...then what are we? Nothing more then organisms that take up space.

Right now AI are still heavily coded and not really self depended just yet, but still.....

The worst thing that could happen is that something happens with the AI controlling a big weapon, after all....nearly all current day missiles are guided by AI

yeah, but the AI in those weapons is extreeeeemely simple. Just cause and effect stuff, not anything even close to resembling consciousness. The same goes for our computers. People who take seriously the threat of thinking machines give mankind WAY too much credit. Only God can create conscious life

I once saw someone creating a simple learning AI within one hour

Ok..it was just a chip with 6 legs but it did LEARN...

From barely standing to walking about

still though... making adjustments and recognizing patterns doesn't equate with consciousness. It goes a little bit deeper than that

I agree with Bware here. Bleah, this could turn veeeeery philosophical at any given moment. I'm going to stop before my brain fries, I'm already trying to get my head around quantum physics as it is :bang: :bang: :bang:

Or, they'll be some sort of Bio/Chemi hazard or something in near future. A rampart Flu Virus, maybe?

If there was a world war 3 there is no way it would involve countries pouring nukes onto each other, that would be mad, quite literally, M.A.D.

with technology at todays standard with every major country possesing nuclear capability one country fires a nuke, so the attacked country sends 2 back, in retaliation the first country & all its allies contribute to a nuclear holocaust that could not only completely destroy the country, but eradicate all life on earth through a painfully slow nuclear winter.

if there was to be a world war 3, & face it, there will be sometime in the furture, it will probably still revolve around infantry tanks & aricraft.

A war will always involve Infantry, Tanks, Aircraft and Navy. Unless the Infantry start using protective battle mech suits and the tanks gain a hovering ability, and fighters become capable of firing lasers  On a more serious note though, I'm pretty sure there'll be an endemic long before WWIII, but who knows? Maybe WWIII will be the cause of the endemic, or vice versa?

it is quite possible that in the race to develoop biological weapons that some damned fool comes up with a hyper resistant strain of bacteria or virus, such an uber-bug could easily spread across the globe, since it would be hard to issolate, leading to once again, the eradication of life on earth.

isnt it all happiness & rainbows

Oh yes, what a wonderful world we live in. Don't forget about Meteor showers, the Ice Caps melting, the atmosphere leaving us, and the sun exploding in 5 billion year's time. Or is it 5 million. Gotta check that up.

yes, but first we have to try to live without coal, oil & gas, which will run out immenantly, meaning massed areas will be without power, this will cause a great deal of death during winter, plus a lot of agriculture relies on electricity, so we are all going to starve too.

then i will be laughing since the area i am in has undergone modernisation, with wind farms.

if only people would just build the goddam nuclear power plants im sure a lot of deaths could be avoided.

Note: Nuclear FUSION reactors. FUSION! I wanna see some Fusion within the next decade. Funny how we create the weapon THEN the power plant. Same goes for fission power as well. Wind power kicks ass 8)

yeah, but fusion aint gonna happen anytime soon, its just too goddam hard, there is too much energy involved to be used safely

besides, fission will do for now if it saves lives. its still cheap, safe reliable power.

or of course we could all listen to that weirdo steven hawking or whatever his name is & build a huge tube round the earth with a miniature black hole in the middle.

Meh, I suppose, but they're getting closer to Fusion power. Problem is they don't know where to build it. I heard on the radio that if it was built in Japan, Japan could have access to nuclear weaponry. Now, what would a country who got nuked, twice, to signal the end of WWII, want with thermonuclear weapons?

As for Stephen Hawking? Give the guy a break, hehe, without him we wouldn't know as much about Black Holes and such as we do now. Not that we need another cataclysmic possibilty to the world ending, but go figure.

perhaps, but japan isnt stupid enough to try & get revenge, whatever it hs you know its not enough.

as for the black holes, we dont really know any more about them than we did, apart from the fact that there are millions all around us on this planet, & that even light isnt fast enough to escape them, its not really anything to go on, yet he claims he can power the entire world with one, good luck with that big ol' tube then.
