Thierry 0 Posted June 10, 2005 The movie of Dune is coming on TV here on Saturday, and its about the Atreides, Harkonnen etc so its definitly related to the Dune Series. Is this the movie from which the games started? Or vice versa? Has anyone else seen the movie? Share this post Link to post
Saracen 16 Posted June 10, 2005 If it's the 1980's version which stared Patrick Stuart and the rock singer Sting, then yes, it is a very good movie. That's a point I don't know why I haven't got the DVD of this film yet... I've seen it at least 100 times now and it still kicks the ass of any interpretation of Frank Herbert's great masterpiece novel.. Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted June 10, 2005 Its from 1984, it has Sting in it, and I recognise 2 of the actors lol, they also play in Emperor (the 2 sons of the Harkonnen big bad ) Share this post Link to post
Waraddict 0 Posted June 10, 2005 The movie of Dune is coming on TV here on Saturday, and its about the Atreides, Harkonnen etc so its definitly related to the Dune Series. Is this the movie from which the games started? Or vice versa? Has anyone else seen the movie? Basically Dune is a series of novels that begun in the mid-sixties written by Frank Herbert, there's six books of the original Dune series altogether, that last written in the mid 80s I think before he died. his son Brian Herbert along with some guy who writes X-Files novels continued the novel series by writing 3 prequel novels for the original Dune novel then decided to base a further 3 new novels that take place 10,000 years before the original Dune novel based on 'The Machine Crusades' which was the mentioned gallatic war in the original Dune novels which caused the banning of AI and any computer in general. Be careful though, the real Dune story is barely recognisable compared to Westwood's Dune, oh there is Spice, Arakis, Worms, Atreides and Harkonnen but everything else is almost non-existant. That meaning, apart from the sub-house names in EB4D, everything else does not exist, Ordos for example are a Westwood invention and the Houses are certainly not as technological as displayed in the Dune games simply because in the real Dune universe it is sacreligious to attempt to create any machine with the likeness of a human (i.e. no computers, no thinking machines, no robots, no advanced mechanical machines etc. ) This may seem stupid, but the great thing about this is that Dune is the one true Sci-fi that does not resort to throwing in a few bull**** technological phrases to win the day unlike Star Wars and Star Trek and such, ironically though both SW and ST use Dune inspired ideas in some parts. Mina Synd 0 Posted June 11, 2005 i used to follow along heavily with the Dune series... i always assumed Ordos was the Westwood's version of the Bene Tleilax, since Ix is mentioned i'm sure... maybe a CHOAM varient since they are a mercenary type? oO The only thing i did find confusing about the game and movies was that in the movies and books (at least, the original movie) the Atreides' colour's were Black and Red... the Harkonnen being blue. as a species we tend to assume black and red being evil from our upbringings and whatnot... and the game inverting the colours confused a lot of people ^^; Share this post Link to post
Waraddict 0 Posted June 11, 2005 Yep, that was confusing, which makes you wonder, why can't we have an RTS where the good guys ARE red? No game does it, except maybe StarCraft, I think you played as red terrans.... Share this post Link to post
Acerz492 1 Posted June 11, 2005 Well, I suppose you could say that the Chinese in Generals/ZH are good guys, as they are (sort of) allies of the USA. But then again, they are a communist nation, so we naturally assume Commies being evil. Mostly because of the propaganda and paranoia spread throughout the Cold War. Meh, depending on how you think, the Chinese are the good guys, and they are red, so there's an example of good guys being red. Haha. Share this post Link to post
Sonic 295 Posted June 11, 2005 http://www.dune2k.com will bring up to speed on all things to do with Dune, from the games, books, movies and DVDs etc... I used to have a Dune site to cover Emperor Battle for Dune back 2001/2002. Oh yeah, I may bring an "EmpNet" site back soon..... there that should confuse all you guys :evilintent: And no I will not give out any more details about it so don't ask. But you can guess. But I will not acknowledge anyone who does guess correctly. Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted June 11, 2005 Oh, that Emperor Network site, its in the History page Share this post Link to post
Thierry 0 Posted June 11, 2005 Well, it just finished, its a good movie, though the Ordos aren't in it, and it is a bit a...weird movie lol Share this post Link to post

BWare 0 Posted June 12, 2005 I am a huge Dune fan. I've read all the books (old and new series), and am working on reading them over again. It is, in my opinion, the greatest science fiction ever written, and second only to Tolkein's Lord of the Rings as the greatest acheivement of the human imagination. Ever. Yes, it's that good. Coming from that point of view, I really had a hard time with the 80s movie... it just strayed WAY too far from the book, and was probably too bizarre (even for science fiction, haha). There have been 2 series that have aired on the scifi channel called Dune and Children of Dune. They are more modern, and they actually do a pretty good job of staying true to the books. You should check them out... better yet, you should just go ahead and read the series! Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted June 12, 2005 The 1984 movie was kinda... well, off... Like BWare said, strayed too far from the book. Not a bad flick but it could have been better. Much, much better. I'm a Dune fan but not excessive. I read the books and like the movies, blah blah blah. Currently in the middle of the Butlerian Jihad. Man, that's a really good book. Have yet to discover why the Atreides and Harkonnens hate each other though... Must be coming soon. @ Thierry: The games don't really follow the books too effectively. The Atreides banner is green and black, not blue. Just one example of not following the books. As for the Ordos, as far as I know, they don't exist in the books. But again, I could be wrong since I haven't read ALL of the old series yet. Still reading Children of Dune ffs. Share this post Link to post
BWare 0 Posted June 13, 2005 Got a lot of catching up to do there dude! The end of Butlerian Jihad is pretty good... pretty sad too Yeah, you're right... the Ordos don't exist, and both the movie and games are almost completely unfaithful to the series. Share this post Link to post
